Player Report: Paulo Henrique Ganso

249

GANSO, linked regularly with Milan, recently played a league game in Brazil that Rossoneri Blog writer, Tony Scerra, was able to watch in person.

This past Saturday, I was in Goiania, Brazil and had the opportunity to see Santos play Atlético Goianiense. Most everyone, especially the teenage girls, were watching Neymar and hoping for something spectacular.

I, however, had my eyes on one person, Ganso. Even when the ball was in Santos’s end of the field, I watched Ganso to see his positioning and how he reacted to different situations. With Milan as one of the favorites to snatch the highly rated trequartista, I decided to write this post to give a preview to fans that may not know much about Ganso.

Montolivo ultimatum
Cassano for Borriello?

First off, I have to say that after watching this game, I truly think that our Mr. X should be Ganso. With his vision and passing ability, he would be dishing out assist after assist to Ibra and Pato. Best-case scenario in my opinion would be either Montolivo or Aquilani in this transfer window then Ganso after he plays in the Club World Club with Santos.

Now, onto Ganso’s on field characteristics. He plays very simple. You won’t see him take 3 or 4 touches on the ball very often. He knows where he will play the ball before he receives it. His strongest attributes are his field vision and his field awareness. The ball switches the field in 2 touches when he gets it. He has both the possession mindset and the killer pass ability. Seeing him with Zlatan and Pato would just be unfair. His passing is truly a joy to watch. If people make runs, he will get them the ball. The connections he made with Neymar were very easy on the eyes. Whether its switching the field in 2 touches or playing that through ball behind the defense, Ganso had the technique and creativity to make goal scoring opportunities out of nothing.

One characteristic of his that surprised me was his physical stature. He’s very tall. His heading ability seemed to be above average as he rose and won headballs on 2-3 corners (both defensively and offensively). He didn’t seem to be very aggressive, but my Brazilian friend told me that he has been a little timid since he blew out his knee about a year ago.

Let me clear up one misunderstanding, Ganso is not Kaka. Kaka could dazzle us with a 70 yard run where he dribbles by 5 defenders and slots the ball into the back of the net. Ganso does not have the speed of Kaka. When you’re watching him, he seems like he is not trying (this may be because 1 day before the game, he flew in from Germany after international duty with Brazil). He is deceptively crafty, and uses his long body very well to buy extra time on the ball waiting for runs to develop.

It would not be fair to my readers if I did not go into the negatives about Ganso. His #1 weakness is his work rate. For a significant portion of the game he spent walking or jogging (particularly when Santos was being countered). This hurt Santos on the defensive end, but also on the offensive end. Magic was created when the ball is on his foot, but he did not have the ball as much as a player of his skills should have. Another area that needs improving is his defensive mindset. More often than not he was standing at the midfield/center center area and waited until his team won the ball back instead of helping his teammates win it back.

Now these areas of limitation for Ganso are very correctable issues. The trequartista in Allegri’s system is designed to help out on the defensive end. He doesn’t have to tackle like Van Bommel but more so needs to make life difficult for the opposing team so that our bulldog midfield can win it and begin the counter.

Ganso would slot perfectly into Allegri’s midfield as a pass-first trequartista. Assists would be scattered like there were when Ronaldinho roamed the left wing at the San Siro, The classic #10. Milan is missing the creative piece to connect the midfield to the attack. Ganso would not only fill this void, but with the experience he has already gained as a starter for the Brazilian Seleccao at only 21 years of age, he would put Milan in serious contention for every competition they enter, including the Champion’s League.

Pato Is Brilliant

This is a situation when I want Kaka back lol :)

Rossonero26

why though? what would a 29 year old injury prone brazilian do to help us?

Kaká

Inter played with their full squad but milan gave chance to many young players + that trashs (bonera & Roma)

Pato Is Brilliant

When is the Berlu Cup?

rossonero23

pato…are you croatian???

hope

hahaha
you like kaka very much, dont you pato is briliant?
Then when kaka comeback, your name will be kaka is brilliant i guess? Hehe
i hope the best 4 milan n kaka.

hope

21 august

Kaká

@Pato is briliant
i have an idea Like you but milan needs to better Midfield , for this season montolivo will be enough but if we want CL we should sign Hamsik too

rossonero23

at this point, hamsik would be welcomed, but napoli won’t sell.

delareuntis hates us..ololol

hope

prandelli too. He doesnt even want to give a chance to abate

Pato Is Brilliant

A new theory of Bonera: Whenever he plays, his team always loses. Whether its a Champions League or a stupid friendly TIM Cup in Bari. He is destined to make his team pay by tasting defeat. So in order to overcome this problem, someone should take an action and shoot this guy in his right knee.

:-)

Rossonero26

do you really put this much emotional investment into one player who hardly plays and will hardly play when our CBs are playing? Bonera didn’t do all that badly in the TIM Cup.

Lady gaga

BERLU’S CUP IS 21ST AUGUST,2011……20:45gmt

Lady gaga

@pato.i.brizzy
Aint no snipers at Bari, but thugs are every where round d blog…so,who gona waist dat CLOWN?

Lady gaga

@pato.i.brizzy
Aint no snipers at Bari, but thugs are every where round d blog…so,who’s gona waste dat CLOWN?

Lady gaga

Ac milan rejected Luca Antonini bid from juventus….dats nasty to me

Rossonero26

he should remain as a squad player.

your posts make no sense…

Milanista

Lady Gaga, you want to sell Antonini when he is the only back-up we have for one of the SB’s? Remember that Zambro might get traded, and if he does, then we will have a shortage of SB’s.

Anyways, Antonini is a decent player. He never complains, yet he still shows ok results on the pitch. Nothing stellar, but a good back-up.

Rossonero26

we didnt win the TIM Cup… but remember lol… we had 8 primavera players and played ODdo and Bonera as our CBs… we did better then I expected… gave a good account for ourselves… with our third string squad.

rossonero23

we didn’t play well…at all. second best to both inter and jube..

i was very impressed with vidal though. wish we signed him. but why would we, when we have seedorf, ambrosini, and gattuso?

Rossonero26

no we played quite well, and nearly had several goals against both… cassano should have had a second against juve, and boateng should have had one against inter.

vidal was mediocre. at best. lost and out of position and got a lucky goal.

didnt watch the game again i see?

Cassano was very impressive… almost had a point to prove.

Milanista

Sorry, have you watched the games or even at least taken a good look at the line-ups? Everything was experimentation for God’s sake. Just because a team lost doesn’t mean that they played bad.

Rossonero26

our formations were highly experimental. 8 primavera players… we needed to see where they are at. poor calvano has a serious injury and may be out for 4-5 months… i like ely. i like kingsley boateng.

Rossonero26

poor cassano should have had a hat trick against juve’s sorry ass defense. we were missing thiago silva, robinho, pato and ibra… point made.

rossonero23

casano played very well and destroyed bonucci…haha

Rossonero26

cassano destroyed juve… and should have had a second goal… very unlucky.

you’re making a huge deal about a friendly where we played 8 primavera players… wow.

rossonero23

vidal was mediocre? i guess scoring and assisting a goal is mediocre…

he wasn’t out of position..he was all over the pitch, true class box to box mid. can’t wait to see more of him…

surprised to see ambrosini play so poorly…wait. he’s past it and has no business playing anymore..lol

Rossonero26

he was totally out of position… he wasn’t all over the field and he isn’t a “true class” box to box mid. he’s average.

stfu seriously.

i want to see vidal get marked out by thiago silva… then we will see reality. juve’s defense is still a sack of shit.

cassano raped them.

rossonero23

man, you never give anyone credit…lol…..

vidal is better than any of our mids, besides van bommel….

better than past it ambro and gattuso..haha….

Rossonero26

no he’s not.

and when vidal is faced up against van bommel he’ll be on the ground most of the time putting up a fit, and he’ll probably get sent off.

i cant wait to count how many red cards vidal gets.

melo 2.0.

rossonero23

maybe as many reds as ibra, or van bommel…lol

Rossonero26

no he’s get more, moron.

Me!

Maan, though Vidal is just a mediocre but you gotta admit it that he did well today. One goal, one assist, and a shot that hit the bar. Is it not enough for you?

Rossonero26

vidal.. .cant believe we were linked to that fool… he looked out of position and a red card waiting to happen.

milanforever

What wrong with you bro? Just admit it already. He is better than Ambro.

Rossonero26

wow. you sure care about the TIM cup… lol… we played a skeleton team with Oddo as a CB… enough said. lets see how special vidal is against our real team. non-existent that is. he’ll probably get sent off. i remember him against venezuela… very average and should have been red carded. this tim cup was nice to see some youngsters…

rossonero23

i wasn’t impressed by any of the youngsters..lol….boateng should of scored, but failed..haha

Rossonero26

i found a few of them to be pretty good… and we put up a better fight. bonera was oddly decent…

sid

lol both of u are morons. vidal can rarely get marked by thiago silva as he does not play in attack and moves up and down the midfield. he would come up in a direct mid batlle against saw gattuso or van bommel(would prob find it tough against either). he is not true class but not average either. he is a young good player with a lot of energy and promise and will do well in juve.

Rossonero26

vidal is nothing more than melo 2.0, and he will get forward enough for him to get nullified. i just remember his extremely poor showing against venezuela…

rossonero23

points out a meaningless against venezuela..lmao.

god, you’re dense…

nothing but air inside of your skull…lol

Rossonero26

um that was the copa america… an actual trophy in a major tournament you idiot.

rossonero23

fine.

pato and robinho were both shit as well in the copa..especially pato. guy couldn’t finish to save his life!

Rossonero26

pato was better than neymar. nice try really. and robinho was the only one in the brazilian team putting his heart into it.

you dont know what you’re saying. you’re a complete clown.

sid

u cant go on just one showing. sure he was bad, but so what ? he was just awesome for leverkuson last season. i know italian league is different but he should do well, versatile player. im sorry u cant compare him to melo they are quite different. and melo was much better for juve than their other mids just cuz sometimes he cudnt keep a cool head they didnt treat him properly and sold him

Rossonero26

yea kinda how like Diego was awesome for a german team then moved to Juventus and flopped badly. Juve is still crap.

rossonero23

pato was not better than neymar. pato will be benched, by fred or hulk..lol..

Rossonero26

fred and hulk are not good enough. pato will not be benched. neymar will be benched. hulk and pato could play upfront… idiot stop responding to my posts.

Pato Is Brilliant

No I am not Croatian, Rossonero23 :-)

rossonero23

oh..my bad.

MoMIlan

who thinks that scott parker of westham would be the solution of our midfield problems he is a dynamic player that can add alot of creativity to the team great passing skills a leader for the midfield good vision and good defensive skills and can come for cheap

Rossonero26

English player and cheap don’t go together. English players are always overpriced.

Rossonero26

plus he’s 30. yes lets be retirement home!

rossonero23

we are the retirement home. come to milan if you want a pension…

and free health care.:):)

Pato Is Brilliant

Thank you Lady and Hope. Nah, if Kaka arrives I am not gonna change my title. Because Kaka was brilliant in his Milan days but right now he is nearly great but not brilliant.

Rossonero26

we should re-sign favalli, dida and emerson too… if we sign kaka. retirement home time! then sell boateng, pato and robinho.

rossonero23

i would sell boateng regardless, he’s not good enough, i’m afraid..lol….

we’ve re-signed gattuso, ambro, roma, seedorf, etc…yet you fail to acknowledge that..which doesn’t surprise me..lol

Rossonero26

then you’re a big fool. boateng is great in midfield… and is defintiely good enough.

second… ambro doesn’t play much, roma is a third string keeper (behind amelia and abbiati), and seedorf is an LCM… if we get an LCM seedorf won’t play much. inzaghi could renew until he is 45 for all i care. idiot.

rossonero23

boateng is crap. wouldn’t make barca’s primavera tbh…lol.

favalli and emerson were also fringe players then, hypocrite.

Rossonero26

boateng is not crap… you fucking jackass.

shrikant

must say boateng lacks creativity and sometimes even directness .. not milan material imo

Rossonero26

then you speak wrong. he’s definitely milan material, and he adds dynamism to our midfield, as well as great energy.

MoMIlan

he is cheap cuz westham was relegated and yes he is 30 but still better than ambro gattuso and MVB cant play all of the season as a start up both ambro and gennaro all completly over

Rossonero26

oh yes lets just do a band-aid solution. lets get a young central midfielder. and flamini is still there. boateng moves to midfield, gattuso goes to bench… and we buy an LCM.

problems solved. no bandaid solutions anymore please. parker is crap anyways.

Pato Is Brilliant

Oh crap. I am hearing some reports that Bayern are going to take the advantage over Monty’s current situation. They are going to make a bid tommorow. I cannot understand they already have Swchieni and Gustavo, so why Monty?

Rossonero26

simple rumor. fiorentina bought kharja, so milan will bid for montolivo. he’ll prefer an italian team.

Pato Is Brilliant

Sorry, we dont need any EPL players, specially Englishmen. They are all overrated in every aspects.

Milanista

That is the best comment I’ve heard from you. Amazing.

MoMIlan

i can see nobody likes parker sorry it was just a thought but still a player of his abilities like cahrlie adam guztavo…

rossonero23

like boateng..fucking terrible tbh

Shev Johannesburg

It is your opinion & wish pato is brilliant, don’t let anyone change your mind. Forza Kaká the king!!! Morinho the loser!!!

Rossonero26

boateng is not fucking terrible. shut the fuck up. he’s a very good player. he’ll move to midfield and do very well for us. end of story.

rossonero23

end of story? according to who? you? grow the fuck up please.
i’m sick of you responding to all of my posts…moron.

Rossonero26

yes end of fucking story. i’m sick you responding to mine. if you dno’t want me to respond, then don’t respond to mine! you inconsistent massive HYPOCRITE.

Pato Is Brilliant

Well lets see about what the future holds for us. We have to be patient because only 13 days are left and maybe Uncle Fester has two secret surprises for us! So, who knows whats in the tunnel, a light? Or a train? Lol. Okay catch ya guys later. Forza Milan, love ya all (excluding giancarlo)

:-)

Rossonero26

yeah two secret surprises, where kaka isnt one of them. giancarlo doesnt post here.

rossonero23

you know who’s in the tunnel?

seedorf and ambrosini…lmao.

stfu rossonero26, sick of your BS.::D:D:D:D

Rossonero26

you STFU. and stop being a stupid hypocrite. juve got raped by cassano today. that’s all that matters to me.

rossonero23

we played poorly though. our midfield is absolute shit.

not as bad as rangers midfield though…ffs…lol.

in other news, Roma lost to some team i;ve never heard of. lazio on the other hand, destroyed some team 6-0..lol

Rossonero26

our team? this team had 8 primavera players you dense stupid fuck. our midfield was fine. we should have beat juventus.

rossonero23

you really are blind. you think our midfield is fine..lol

Rossonero26

i never said that you nut. i said we need two more midfielders and we are set. so stfu.

Me!

I’m sick of people fighting here.

rossonero23

ciao pato.

have a good day.:)

sid

can u guys please stop posting on this site ? imagine one of milans players or managements reads this they will think some fans are complete imbeciles(which can be true) but dont make it public. u guys arent even arguing over much just taking swipes at each other. we are all milan fans and entitled to our own opinions. respect each other or just dont say anything

Rossonero26

I don’t think this site is serious enough to be read by players or management. That’s milannews.it maybe…

Gianni

If Cassano can continue to work on his fitness, he can be the trequartista.

Rossonero26

if boateng read this blog he would be sadden by all the false shit people say about him… but then again, the real fans are in milan supporting him and believing in him.

Me!

Real fans don’t curse at the others. We are family.

Rossonero26

the honest, true fans in the san siro cursed out leonardo. my point is made.

MoMIlan

seriously know boateng haven’t found his right place yet but i believe allegri did he got good physical skills and some pace and dribble abillities i think he will be a new and improved Gattuso

Milanista

I don’t get how people cannot like Boateng. He’s a fan favorite for the people in Italy. Everybody loves him. He’s very efficient at pressing the ball, which is something that none of our midfielders can do besides Van Bommel and Boateng. Players are not scared of Gattuso anymore, but they are scared of Boateng. A player gets the ball, they see that Boateng is far away, but 5 seconds later he is already on the player’s ass. We should be thanking him for everything he did so far.

rossonero23

too bad he can’t pass the ball, which is what the link from midfield to attack should do…

Milanista

Too bad you can’t think, which is what users on this site should be able to do…

rossonero23

take your own advice dude..haha

Rossonero26

he’s a class midfielder… he’ll better as an RCM. end of story. Boateng is a dynamic, fast midfielder that we needed for years.

Rossonero26

but hey, rossonero23 (rip off name) is the same guy who thinks allegri is bad… this guy is clueless.

Kriwoel

No news update about Trofeo Tim last night??

Rossonero26

I think to cool these issues this site should disable the comment section… only way… i think. this has all gone way too far.

insulting great players on our team who had great seasons… what next? sell Pato?

Yehez Kiel

why? just because your having issues? thats just BS man.. if you think its out of control why dont YOU stop commenting? simple logic..

Rossonero26

it was just an idea… but then again ur usually full of bullshit… i won’t stop commenting because i speak my mind. use your head for once… or is that too much to ask for someone who rarely does?
