Milan lost a friendly today with the second-string players and some new signings and Primavera playing.

After winning the Trofeo Silvio Berlusconi last night against Monza in a penalty shoot-out, Milan today had another pre-season match, facing Trento from Serie C.

The game was not televised so only those at Milanello had the chance to watch. Milan played without the starters of the Monza game, as well as without Charles De Ketelaere (mercato reasons), Alexis Saelemaekers (fever), Marko Lazetić, Fodé Ballo-Touré, Divock Origi (out of the plans), Junior Messias, Davide Calabria (injuries) and Noah Okafor (coaching staff decision as part of his pre-season).

Stefano Pioli played a 4-3-3, with Yunus Musah, Yacine Adli and Tommaso Pobega in midfield, and Samuel Chukwueze, Lorenzo Colombo and Luka Romero in attack. Trento ended up winning the match, with Leon Šipoš scoring the only goal of the match in 66′.

Milan have now failed to keep a clean-up in every pre-season game so far. Next game is on Saturday against Étoile Sportive du Sahel at Milanello and then another match on Sunday against Novara.

AC Milan (4-3-3) – Stefano Pioli
Marco Sportiello; Alessandro Florenzi, Simon Kjær, Jan-Carlo Simić (78′ Clinton Nsiala), Davide Bartesaghi (88′ Álex Jiménez); Yunus Musah (56′ Kevin Zeroli), Yacine Adli (78′ Victor Eletu), Tommaso Pobega; Samuel Chukwueze (56′ Chaka Traorè), Lorenzo Colombo (78′ Francesco Camarda), Luka Romero.
Unused: Mirante, Nava; Paloschi; Cuenca.

Just a friendly, of course, but the overarching theme in the preseason is -> this is likely to be a disaster in midfield.

Starting a season and the important matches at the start with a team that has not (cannot possibly expected to anyway) gelled — plus, still nobody in the midfield who can hold and dictate.

With 3-runners midfield, the opposing teams will easily seep through the middle, and overload on the defence. With Theo probably foraying forward, that leaves three men in defence – none of whom has exactly been a “rock” in the defence.

Biggest issue I see is the change of system from 4231 to 433.

Not only will Pioli need to settle in all the new signings but our regulars need to adapt to a new system as well. He really made it hard for himself this preseason.

If he’d stick to 4231,they wouldn’t even need all these signings. Now after 8 new players, we still lack a proper DM and a starting material ST. Not to mention deputy CB, LB and probably RB.

Yup.
IMO the worst problem is that the midfield appears to be totally unbalanced.
I am also slightly skeptical about the attack.
Chukwueze is used to running at space.
This reflects the same strength as Leao – and unfortunately the same weakness. Leao does not find space to run against low blocks – Milan loses.
Chukwueze will face the exact same problem.

Btw the SM comment space is a circus.

SM is really a terrible platform because of retards like Giancarlo and Boulden and several others.

@Ted, absolutely correct. The Theo-Leao connection is intercepted by a midfielder in the 4-3-3 set up, and all this disruptions is causing a breakdown of fluid attacks. These connections and telepathy are not built in a month.

This whole mercato is now looking like the Fassone-Mirabelli fiasco.

Exactly, same happened last season when Pioli tried 343. It was too crowded for Theo-Leao connection to work. I already see Theo a bit lost and it also seem that cause of formation change and crowded midfield, Pioli wants him to focus more on defensive phase which is restraining him from his natural play.

Coach Seedorf

Disaster loading…. Sacking Maldini was always going to backfire on us no matter the new signings. I’ve been saying this ever since but some funny people who call themselves Milan fans think otherwise. How can you lose Ibra and Maldini at once. Maldini was going to strengthen reasonably the existing team that reached Semi finals of UCL with players like SMS, Berardi, Gundogan, Jackson etc. This is what we needed. Instead, Cardinale committed a cardinal sin by sacking M&M and the geniuses left behind decide to sell Tonali and rebuild the whole team. Welcome to another year Zero guys where… Read more »

@Coach Seedorf Much respect to you. If I recall correctly, I’ve known you from a while back on Goal.com before they changed their whole outlook. I see that like me, you believed that there was a chance Gundogan would have arrived in Milan with Maldini’s persuasion. But well, it’s gone now. Maybe Lazio would have demanded too high for SMS, but imagine this Milan squad with Gundogan, Tonali in midfield. Milan didn’t need to buy as many as 8 new players – and still counting. Team building is strategic. I believe Ndick’a would have arrived in Milan along with Kamada… Read more »
