Davide Calabria said ‘we are a young, ambitious group so we always want to get good results’ after Milan beat Samp.

A Derby win over Inter, a 4-0 win over Lazio and a 1-0 win over Sampdoria to put Milan in the first place of the standings. It’s been a terrific week for the Rossoneri.

“We are certainly in an important state of mental and physical form,” Calabria told Sky Italia after the game. “It’s been a great week but it’s been a good Milan for several months. We are in a good form and we must continue like this.”

On his impact: “I’ve worked hard to get to this level, I’m happy and satisfied. It’s a long journey and everyone’s attitude is fundamental and I like to set an example also for my teammates who must not give up. You have to be perfect in your attitude.”

On his growth: “My growth is the result of the coach’s work and trust. We are fit and I feel good in the team. The coach leaves me free to play on the pitch. I really like how we play and I am happy with what he is giving to the team.”

On the objectives of the team: “We are confident and sure of what we can do and what we can achieve. We are a young team but one that has a great desire to win. There are teams ahead of us on the path, perhaps with more talent, but we put on desire and energy. The fans are working us a lot and they are the best in Italy. We do not set limits because that would be stupid, we have to ride the wave of positivity.”

On Scudetto bonuses: “Maybe we’ll go and talk about it [laughs]… Ibrahimović, Romagnoli and I will talk about it.”

Speaking to MilanTV, Calabria said: “It was a positive game. We were good in the second half; we just needed to finish our chances. You have to kill these games off earlier so as to not take any risks but we’re pleased. This is what we wanted; as the coach said, we had to win today. It’ll help us to work well over the coming days so it was what we wanted and it was what we got, so we’re happy.”

On the clean sheet: “We work each day on going out there and keeping clean sheets because we know that our forwards create a lot. We’re a good defense; we’ve had the odd big absence but we’re a solid, united group and we work hard as a unit to not concede any goals – not just the defenders. Of course, this is a strength of ours because it gets us results.”

On first place: “We need to believe in ourselves if we want to aim high. We all really believe in one another and that’s not just empty words either. We work hard each day to be high up in the table. We’re a young, ambitious group so we always want to get good results. We always want to win. We give it our all to win every game. Of course, there are tougher games like today, actually, we don’t often play at this time of day; Lazio and Inter are good teams that keep on winning, but so do we, and we know it. It’s something that you feel inside: we absolutely believe in ourselves [smiles].”

On the many fouls: “We could have awarded fewer fouls today: some of those 50/50 fouls I wouldn’t have given but it’s not my position to make those judgements. The game loses its rhythm. At the end of the day, it’s a contact sport and if we blow up for every little bit of contact then the game doesn’t make sense, especially with VAR. You don’t need to do it in certain areas of the pitch and then VAR can review it if the move ends with a goal. The league has improved overall in this regard. Maybe it was a bit much today but the referee did well in general today: it was officiated well in every aspect.”
