Daniele Bonera wouldn’t sign for fourth place right now but states Milan have to focus game by game in order to stay on top of the Serie A table.

The magnificent run of Milan continued on Sunday afternoon as they took on Cesare Prandelli’s Fiorentina at Stadio San Siro.

Despite being without coach Stefano Pioli and starters Ismaël Bennacer, Rafael Leão and Zlatan Ibrahimović, Milan found little problems to beat the Viola.

Alessio Romagnoli (17′) found the back of the net first while Franck Kessié (26′ pk) doubled the lead of the Rossoneri. Kessié nearly scored a brace but had his second penalty saved by Bartłomiej Drągowski. On the other side, Gianluigi Donnarumma had some incredible saves, most notably against Franck Ribéry and he helped Milan get a very important win and a clean sheet.

Milan remain top of the Serie A table, five points clear from Inter and Sassuolo who are currently in second and third places, and six points above Juventus who are in 4th place.

“Winning, we it was great as a player and it’s just as great as a coach. Having had this unexpected week come up, we all hope the Coach will be back with us tomorrow or in the next few days, but this has been a wonderful experience in my personal journey, although I still have a lot to learn,” Bonera, who is the stand-in coach of Milan, told MilanTV at the end of the game.

“The plays down the right? We’re very happy with Saelemaekers, he’s doing exactly what we ask of him, he’s often seen as a player of quantity but he is also very technically skilled and his partnership with Calabria, who has performed very well, is confirmation of our growth. We are very satisfied.

“Milan without Ibrahimović? We all agree that the great qualities, not just technical or physical but also human, of Zlatan have an important on a group which, looking in from outside, might seem very young. However, we’ve got special guys here. Before the game I allowed myself to say that I’m proud to sit on this bench, because I work with a squad of special players and they’ve proven it day after day. We’ve only continued on the path traced by coach Pioli, and we can’t wait for his return.

“The objectives? We have to think game by game. We are a team that has a few flaws, as I said, we have young players, and that can lead us to fall into ugly pitfalls. We know we have to do our best in training, day by day. That’s what we’ve done and will continue to do.”

Speaking to DAZN, Bonera said: “What do I see in this Milan? I see another small piece to put into this great puzzle that started some time ago. The game after the Europa League is always the toughest, but we reacted like the great team we are.

“The video chat on the pitch between Pioli and the players at the end of the game? It’s a lovely group with values. We had the video call in the dressing room too. The coach is with us all the time, really, and keeps up to date with all the training sessions at Milanello.

“How does it feel to be on the bench? I’m very happy and satisfied. I am really enjoying the experience, but this team has a great coach called Pioli. Above all we are all anxious to see him back on the touchline.

“Romagnoli’s celebration after the goal? I missed what he did during the celebration, as I was too busy urging everyone to get back into position. I am happy with the performance, but above all the spirit of the team.

“Kessié? We know how important Franck is, he has become pivotal in terms of quantity and quality. We used to think he was mainly muscle, but he has really improved his technique and we are very happy with him. He’s made continuous growth.

“Çalhanoğlu? There are moments in the season when you take two shots and score three goals, but today he hit the post this time. In all honesty, the contribution Calha gives goes well beyond goals, as he works really hard for the team and makes a big impact, whether he scores or not. He’s always positive and we are satisfied with his performance.

“Calabria and Kjær? Davide believes in himself a lot more and that has made the difference, he’s made a growth in terms of personality. We knew Simon’s experience would be crucial to this team when he arrived in January. He’s a reliable player, a true leader and a true man.

“Donnarumma? Champions have this kind of performances. Gigio is always there and he showed it also today.

“Similarities with the Scudetto-winning Milan? We have grown in terms of self-esteem thanks to the daily work and the pleasure of suffering and working together at Milanello. This unites us to that Milan.”

Bonera also had a post-match interview with Sky: “Pioli? We made a video call with the coach, he is the leader of this group and we are really happy with the results we’ve obtained. The role of the coach? It’s a small parenthesis of a personal journey, I still need time. I’m happy to work with Pioli and his staff, he’s a great man and a great coach.

“Tonali? He’s a guy who is applying himself. We are happy with what he did today. Sandro and I talked often, he had to understand our idea, that of Pioli. It took some time but we never doubted the value of the player. The penalties? I don’t know who will shoot the next one, they’ll decide… mistakes are part of the game.

“The Scudetto? We’re missing a lot but we want to stay at the top. If we give up we become a team with flaws so we must always stay up there with this attitude.”

Daniele held a post-match press conference as well: “Would I sign for fourth place? I don’t think it’s time to sign, we have to concentrate on our daily work, we know that this is the only way we can stay on top until the end. If we lower our intensity then we won’t go anywhere.

“If I liked Tonali’s performance? He had a good game, I saw some great improvements. He arrived from a different way of being on the pitch and of playing. We concentrated on working with him to be able to put him in the best conditions to express himself.

“How important is it that Milan are +5 from Inter and +6 from Juventus? It’s important to be in front but it must not become something that takes away our strength. We have to think about what we have done to be there. In this group we know it well. We must have the desire to improve every day, otherwise we’ll stay in front for a little time.

“If I’m still surprised by this Milan? This group surprises me for the great passion it puts into working and the professionalism it puts into it every day. They will be waiting for us at the gate, we know there will be some difficult moments as well.

“How important is Saelemaekers for this team? We know everyone’s importance. We knew of his great physical qualities but he is surprising us also for his technical qualities. He has a great spirit of sacrifice. He embodies what an important for us is.

“If the enthusiasm is also growing within the club? I thank the availability of the ownership to work with important means in a difficult period. I thank the ownership on my own behalf and on behalf of the coach, they are very ambitious and are close to us.”

You guys made me proud

LionHeart

Good game by the lads. Please, kindly extend Kjær’s contract. Saelemaker also did well today. I want scudetto this season please. lol

Rickaka22

Who knew Saelemaekers will turn out good like this?

Raven

That Maldini-Ibra effect

Rossi

His dribling and decision making has realy improved. If he can continue improving like this in other aspects of his game(mainly his shooting), he will turn out to be a really nice winger.

Raven

Guys let’s debate. After seeing Diaz next to Calhanoglu and Saelemaekers I have the feeling that our frontline is fixed. Leao and Rebic can attack the wings or spearhead the attack if Ibra is on the bench while Hakan and Diaz can do great behind the striker. Haugue is hungry for minutes and Maldini is not being rushed that’s is nice to see. Pioli has been consistently giving minutes to Krunic, our 4th starter, he lacks technique but he might still develop to be a good worker for the team. Dalot seems like a good substitute to the wingbacks when… Read more »
