Brahim Díaz was presented to the press, sounding confident that he and Milan can have a great season.
Brahim arrived from Real Madrid on a loan deal to strengthen the attack of the Rossoneri. The Spaniard has already scored his debut goal, in the 5-1 win of Milan over Vicenza on Wednesday.
Today, the 21-year-old was presented to the press at Milanello, answering the questions of the journalists:
“Well, first of all it’s a great pleasure to have a chance to play in this great club, it’s a club with a huge heritage, it is a club that comes from a beautiful time, a great time following the lockdown and it is a great pleasure to play for Milan, which is a great club.
“What were my first thoughts as I walked in Milanello? It was an incredible, extraordinary experience. I remember that in 2011 I was at San Siro and it is special, the emotion of being here – to play and train at Milanello… Milanello is the heart, the core, there are so many services and facilities to do things really big. The most important thing is to train, to practice and to try all the different tactics.
“My first emotions in the first hours as a Rossonero? I was impressed by the people definitely, and the supporters. My welcome has been very, very warm and extraordinary. It is a special club with 100-year-old heritage on an international level, not just Italian. It is really great to breathe this atmosphere and to wear this jersey. Hopefully we can really do big with this great club, and I feel proud to be a Rossonero.
“If I’ve already spoken with Pioli about my position on the pitch? What I said to the coach stays between us… I will play in the role that he will entrust me with and that’s clear. Of course, I prefer to play behind the strikers as an attacking midfielder but it depends.
“What are my Milan memories from when I was young, of players like Kaka, Van Basten and Maldini? Well, here we have a legend of football, a legend of Milan, a legend of the world of football. There are many, many players here at Milan that went through this, that played for this team. I really am reminded of many legends of football because Milan is such a historical club, everybody remembers all the great players.
“The fact that I’m here only on a 9-month loan and if the desire is to go back to Real Madrid or stay here like Theo Hernández? Well, I don’t really want to talk about it. For the time being I am here and I’m focused on the team and want to play well for Milan. It will be a great year, I have this very clear in my mind – I will only think about Milan this year and I’ll be focusing on the results that we’ll achieve together.
“What made me choose Milan and how important was Maldini? It is true I had different offers to pick from. But as I said before and as I want to say again – Milan is a really historical club, it’s a great team with exceptional people, people who are doing their best and are working out of their way to make Milan achieve what it deserves. What can I say about Maldini…? I spoke to him, I spoke to Massara but the things that we said will stay between us. It is however a pleasure to finally play with this team and I’m sure everything that we said played an important role in my choice.
“Why I chose #21 for my jersey? It’s a number that I’ve always liked and also great players wore it at Milan – Zlatan is the last one; I like #21 and I like the fact that great players have used it. And by the way I played with the same number at Real Madrid.
“If I called Castillejo before coming to Milan since we both great up together at Málaga? I have a very special relationship with him, I was so lucky to play with him at Málaga in the young team. We’ve known each other forever so it’s a pleasure to share the dressing room with him.
“If the objective is to return to the Champions League following the renewal of Ibrahimović, and the signings of Tonali and I? Well, Milan has many objectives, not just the Champions League. Milan must aspire also to the Scudetto. The purchase of Tonali and the renewal of Ibra are excellent signs and we can do great things.
“If I have other ties in the dressing room apart from Castillejo – like Theo Hernández – and what are my first impressions from training with Ibra? I haven’t yet got to know Theo but I’m sure I’ll have a chance to get to know him during the week; he’s a phenomenon, he really is a great star. Playing with Zlatan is incredible, playing side-by-side with him. The last Scudetto that Milan won it was when Zlatan was there, he has a lot of experience in the dressing room, and he really builds a team and playing alongside him means having great results.
“If I had an idol that I grew inspiration from when I was young? Yes of course. Every single player has an idol, a myth that they aspire to. Mine were Iniesta and Isco for example, I remember Iniesta’s great deeds on the field. There are many other players that I was passionate about with their way of playing, their style… there are so many strong players I couldn’t single out one now. I’d say that I’d choose so many that I wouldn’t want to list them all.
“If I chose Milan because other Spanish players got to the national team following being here? As I said before, Milan is a great club and an historic club, so I never thought about it.
“If Zidane talked to me about Calcio? Well I will not reveal what I said to Zidane because he’s not here to reply. He’s a great phenomenon of football and I’m focused on Milan so I don’t want to talk about other people who are not related to Milan.
“The dressing room atmosphere at Milan? There is a great mood there, a great spirit. It’s a sensational kind of team, it is really strong and there’s a great mood there. I think we can do great things together, I said it before and I’ll say it again. I’m very confident and optimistic, there’s a winning spirit in this team.
“How do I feel physically considering the run of game that is approaching? I’m ready and I feel well. I feel fit.
“What kind of determination do I have? I want to really be the best and give my top and really do my best for the club and for the teammates. I really want to do great things and I want to end the year in the best way.
“The fact that there are great personalities at the club – not just on the field but also in the management – and what would I like to ‘steal’ from any of them in order to do better? You can always learn from anybody, from any football player, from any manager… of course I have a lot to learn because I’m very, very young. I look at everything that surrounds many, there are fantastic players I can learn from and there are many strong players by my side.
“How would I describe myself as a player to the Milan fans? As you might have seen and I hope you’ll see in the coming games, I would define myself as a player with a good dribbling ability, a good individual technical capacity and I can definitely hurt the opponents and make the difference.
“If it’s helpful as a young player to step into such a young team? Yes, of course. It definitely helps and Milan have had great results after the lockdown phase. Hopefully we can carry on until the end of the season.
“What do I expect from myself on a personal level? Well, I obviously hope to give my best, to give everything that I have and do whatever I can to help this club.”
