Matteo Gabbia has spoken to MilanTV a few days after making his Serie A debut.

The 20-year-old came on as a substitute for Simon Kjær after the Dane center back suffered an injury during the match against Torino on Monday.

Gabbia is the Rossoneri’s 4th choice center back, but since Mateo Musacchio had a physical problem of his own, Matteo was thrown into the mix before the end of the first half. Gabbia played an excellent game and helped Milan get an important 1-0 win. The Italian gave an interview to MilanTV on Thursday:

Let’s go back to your debut…
“Those moments passed very quickly, but it was great, they are still printed in my mind. I immediately focused on the game and I’m happy I came on with the right mentality and did well, but now I’m focused on my future.”

How’s your understanding with Romagnoli?
“Alessio is a great guy, a Captain who instills calm into the team. I’m really happy I played 45 minutes alongside him and I hope there will be more; Alessio is a true Champion and I hope to learn from him just by training together every day.”

Who’s your mentor in the team?
“Lots of teammates have been of great help, naming just one would not be fair to the others. My current teammates have been really great, always supportive in every training and I just have to thank them. I can only improve by learning from them too.”

Your favorite moment after the final whistle…
“I was really pleased to receive so many messages and phone calls, this means I have lots of people who care for me, who I impressed, but surely my favorite moment after the final whistle was with my family and my girlfriend and I wish to thank them for always being on my side, always supporting me and those moments are unique.”

Who do you owe all this to?
“To both my parents, because only they know how hard it was, how many difficult nights I’ve been through, and have always been there supporting me, finding the right words. Therefore, my parents have been the most important people in my footballing career, even not being on the pitch with me, but my development off the pitch is equally important.”

Your idol is…?
“I don’t have one specific idol, there are plenty of players I look up to and I’ve grown fond of, such as Thiago Silva, for Milan, back in the days; referring to other teams, I always liked De Rossi, for what he represented for his beloved club.”

Fiorentina up next…
“It’s a really important game for us all, from my perspective, it’s an important game like all the others, with three important points up for grabs and I hope to play, but it’s up to the coach to decide and I will accept his decisions.”

Your objective as a Rossonero…
“My objective at Milan is quite simple: to do the best we can to win all the games we play and most importantly, always give my all for this club.”

My dear, Gabbia, I am one of the few people in here who said very clear that you are the only young player of Milan who is prepared to play in the first team this year. I argued with someone who was telling me that Djalo is a huge talent and he deserves a place in the first team, but Djalo hadn’t good games at Primavera, while you were playing constantly good at Lucchese in serie C, were starter in Italy U 20 at world cup and that you were very talented and prepared ! And so it was !… Read more »

Gabbia is pure talent. He is why I had no objections to Caldara leaving to return for Atalanta. We should get rid of Musacchio and get Thiago Silva.

With Romagnoli, Silva, Kjær and Gabbia our defense is sold.

Duarte is not that impressive. Not even sure what Milan saw in him to sign him. I would loan him out to get game time.

Right on point nick
I think Duarte is good
I think our defense is good and Gabbia could be part of the future

Reports say that he is favored to start over Musachio tomorrow , i am.happy for him and i home he gets enough chances to prove himself and to gain more experience.
However , i hope he can also be patient and doesn’t ask to leave once he is not playing enough , that’s how we lost Locatelli and Cutrone. I know they should’ve had more playing time but Milan is in a difficult period and that’s why coachs doesn’t want to risk games by starting young unexperienced players. So i just hope he proves himself now while the others are injured.

Musa is still injured I read. We might need to use Kessie as CB if we get another injury there

For our CB and RB problems , i wonder how much playing time Abate would have found if we renew his contract for another year ! He wasn’t that good but he is better than Calabria and Conte , and was a good CB too.
But no one would have thought both Calabria and Conti will be this bad and most our CBs will be injured so …

Good luck kid. Tbh, there’s a lot of work to be done judging by the Torino match. Romag-Kajaer looked much more comfortable shutting down Belotti and co

We need to start working on the summer transfers. Some players I like who seem to fit our scouting profile (so young and relatively cheap; no superstars)-
1. Yousuf Attal from Nice as RB (should compliment Theo on the other side)
2. Fofana from Udinese as box-2-box CM (perfect to play alongside Kessie in defensive setups).
3. Jonathan Tah as CB from leverkuzen.
4. Bernardesci as RM/RW from Juve
5. Patenga from SPAL as CF (backup for Zlatan who I assume is staying next season; otherwise, we need a starting forward)

What do you guys think? Any other realistic names?

1. Atal is a great player though he is not so good defensively. And he is not cheap at all , he is worth at least 40M and that’s what Paris and Tottenham i guess offered for him earlier before he gets injured. 2. Fofana is good but i hope we can get a better mid ! Like Rakitić or any other experienced big name. 3. I don’t know about Tah since i don’t watch the german bundesliga , but i’ve been hearing about him for like 3 years and that’s promising. 4. Some reports said that in january Bernardesci… Read more »

Assim, I think Bernardesci can come for slightly cheaper, and he will soon want to leave with his lack of playing time. I thought the Patenga deal didn’t go through, but I could be wrong. Also didn’t know concrete offers were made on Attal by the big teams; I guess this hinders our chances.

Raven, I agree our main priority is the right side in general; regarding the CF position- Zlatan won’t last forever, but so far he’s showing all signs of being capable of another season.

Petagna is Napoli’s player !

Certainly a RW and a CF is a priority. Ibra might stay but we shouldn’t rely on him, and IMO leao will bethe first flop of the decade

1. Conti and calabria as rb. Hakimi in place of calabria if we are investing money for this position.
2. A DM is much more needed. Tonali, moro, koopmeiners, florentino luis or bakayoko should be prioritised.
3. T.silva for free or wesley fofana from st etienne, cheaper than tah.
4. Castillejo is our rw. Zaracho or de paul as trequartista, both can cover the flanks as well.
5. Petagna is on loan at SPAL from napoli. Alex isak of sociedad or scamacca from sassuolo are good young strikers to consider.

He still needs a lot of work to do before he is ready for Serie A. He is somewhat slow and his positioning was not that great during friendlies last summer against Bayern, etc. He is promising. But I would choose either him or Romagnoli and then pair him up with a more aggressive CB like Ramos.

Gabbia slow ? Are we talking about the same player ? He doesn’t have rythm and he must gel with his partner but he is a gold for Milan ! He is fantastic, he needs to play more often !
