Pioli reportedly considers using 3-4-2-1 against Juventus, Ricardo Rodríguez in defense, Conti and Theo in midfield

Stefano Pioli tested some things in training today and it’s possible a three-man defense is deployed against Juve.

Milan’s season has been one big disaster so far and on Sunday night they have a chance to cause a major upset as they take on league leaders Juventus.

The Rossoneri are clear underdogs and very few people believe that they can actually get points from Allianz Stadium.

As reported by Peppe Di Stefano and on the website of Sky, coach Pioli tried an interesting tactical solution in today’s training. Pioli tested a three-man defense with Ricardo Rodríguez returning to the line-up in a center-back position, alongside Alessio Romagnoli and Léo Duarte.

Andrea Conti and Theo Hernández would act as wingbacks with Ismaël Bennacer and one of Lucas Paquetá and Rade Krunić in central midfield. The attack should be unchanged, with Suso – who returned from injury – and Hakan Çalhanoğlu playing just behind Krzysztof Piątek. Rafael Leão, who disappointed off the bench against Lazio, would therefore start on the bench again.

It’s still possible of course that the usual 4-3-3 will be seen against Juventus, but Pioli seems to be thinking of solutions to try to surprise the Bianconeri and perhaps steal a point from Maurizio Sarri.

Possible XI vs Juve (3-4-2-1) – Stefano Pioli
Gianluigi Donnarumma; Léo Duarte, Alessio Romagnoli, Ricardo Rodríguez; Andrea Conti, Ismaël Bennacer, Lucas Paquetá, Theo Hernández; Suso, Hakan Çalhanoğlu; Krzysztof Piątek.

I really hope that this is true because using a 3421 formation makes a lot of sense given how poor our wingbacks are defensively. However, offensively we would be very good. Both Hernández and Conti are really great going forward with building our attacking play. Smart move by Pioli if he uses the 3421 formation. Conti had the highest assist and goals during his last season at Atalanta. This formation would work really good for Conti, Hernandez and Caldara. As Caldara is better in a back 3. It also gives Paquetá the opportunity to play closer to the goal. I… Read more »

Mate, you correctly point out the main advantage of this lineup in that it frees up Conti and Theo, but I’m afraid the disadvantages will outweigh the advantages. This lineup leaves us exposed almost everywhere. In the middle because Bennaser + Paquetta aren’t enough there for defense, and on the right where Suso, Conti, and Paquetta will leave Duarte hanging against no other than CR7. And on the left we need to depend on Hakan dropping backwards. Sarri will most likely have a field day with this lineup.

Also, all the talk about Conti being amazing offensively has been hype. On top of that he and Suso has no understanding at all – proven time and time again when they played.
I would rather let Calabria take the wing and overlap with Suso without having to worry about getting caught up in defensive positions.

I reported what I saw yesterday & it was the exact same news yet people here vote down me for reporting that Pioli is going to use 3 man defense. What I saw is a 3-6-1 formation with Conti & Theo as wingbacks, Krunic & Bennacer is defensive mids and Hakan & probably Suso (he used Borini in trainings) as attacking midfielders/wingers behind Piatek. Again In theory he is doing the best job If he goes for this. Crowding the mid area to stop Juve midfielders to provide. I should say that for second part of the training the team… Read more »

Well, it’s pretty obvious that 433 is not working. Calhanoglu is not a winger and Suso is so inconsistent and predictable on the RT.

If Pioli uses a 3421 and stick with it he will definitely get the best out of this squad but I repeat we cannot keep changing formation every week.

I’m not a fan of Pioli but this makes most sense given how poor we are defensively especially our wingbacks.

Yeah based on what we have and on paper a 3-4-3 (3-4-2-1 or 3-6-1 or 5-4-1!!!) is probably best formation but I don’t know what they saw in trainings. Some coaches prefer formation changes even during game (Allegri, Pep, Zidane &…) & Some like to keep it simple (Carleto for example). I like keeping a formation but something is very visible in our team. When we have no good defensive midfielder, we can’t play with formations who use one in front of the defense. For 4-2-3-1 we have bad wingers & wing backs so a 3-4-3 makes sense (again on… Read more »

This is quickly starting to look like Montella’s last matches. The 4-3-3, or 4-5-1 (4-2-3-1) as I like to think of it, isn’t a complete failure under Piolo. Yes, the results are not there. But we played some good matches, and the points we dropped were at due in some cases to temporary insanity by our players (mostly Conti and Calabria), and in other cases to lack of coordination between players who don’t each other well. Better than trying to switch formation every week, we should stick to the 4-2-3-1 which fits our squad best, and try to twick it… Read more »

Again with 3-4-3 and Montella!!! He used 3-5-2 its a different formation and we aren’t playing 4-2-3-1. We are playing a 4-3-3 that changes to 3-4-3 when we attack (sky did a comprehensive review of this formation and even said that Pioli is copying Mancini). Sadly Calabria/Conti were not able to adapt to the shift and Theo is horrible in defensive work. That’s why Pioli is trying to solve the problem in our wing back positions by reducing one midfielder and adding another defender. + Montella wasn’t a bad coach. He is doing great. At Fio. Miha is doing great… Read more »

that team for this game to stop ronaldo would be great,2 left backs, but drop rodriguez put caldara in for the other games, plus i would like to see 2 out of calhanoglu, paquetta, rebic behind piatek, then we would score more goals

Kessie still should be starting
Best box to box midfielder we’ve got
Despite his ordinary form
We need him in defensive midfield
And now we want him gone& he’s on the transfer list.
Duarte worries me at centre back , he should have cleared that header for Lazio winner last week
Then didn’t follow his man… no experience .
We should be stepping out v juve pumped up
Like it’s our grand final , cmon ref fair game please

Three man defense is always harder to coordinate, and this kind of experimentation didn’t work the few times we already tried it. And I seriously doubt Bennaser + Paquetta can hold the middle on their own against Juve, even with Hakan dropping back. Even more so considering they will have to cover the holes Conti and Theo will most surely leave. The entire right flank of our defense will be essentially upto Duarte.

Very ambitious lineup, to put it mildly.

Yup, but when you don’t have midfielders and face Ronaldo and his friends you field 5 defenderse and hope for the best.

It’s logical mate, I’m no coach and came to the same conclution.

Let’s be frank, Kessié should be in this match. Duarte can’t hold Ronaldo alone . Suso, Paqueta and Conti will leave him exposed. This coach should use his sense. Am not saying we will win if we use Kessié, but we can manage our loss. I don’t want us to lose too cheaply or generously.. Coach should find a place for Kessié.The chances of winning against Juventus is very very slim considering our situation.

Frank Kessie should not even have a Milan bib in spite of Jersey. His style of play is so horrible and lackadaisical. He misplace passes, bow for tackles and so lethargic with or without the ball. The only significant thing he does his to battle for masculinity, hit uncertain passes, hold inessential possessions. He makes himself egoistic and too indispensable because of the mediocre level of Milan. He could only wax in a standard team with a lustrous coach who doesn’t take his name as jewel.

If only we kept bayo, we could have gone with a 4231 using him and kessie as holding mids, allowing theo and conti to push forward without leaving us exposed. Theo on left hakan as a 10 or paqueta/rebic. I wonder where we would be under gattuso with new signings, we will never know.
