Zvonimir Boban has spoken during today’s Festival dello Sport about the time of the Diavolo.

The international break is in full force and Milan took advantage of it to make changes on the bench: sacking Marco Giampaolo and bringing Stefano Pioli.

Today, La Gazzetta dello Sport hosted an event called Festival dello Sport in Trento, and Milan Chief Football Officer Zvonimir Boban was among the guests.

“Why is Boban at Milan? I’m asking that too [laughs]…” Boban said, before clarifying: “I like being at Milan, it was just a joke. I’m happy to fight again for the club I love. I don’t believe I’m arrogant. Champions always think too highly of themselves, but I don’t play anymore. After not understanding anything about life, I started studying, understanding things more, punishing myself if necessary.

“We are experiencing a difficult moment. Sacking a coach is a defeat for everyone. It is a choice that we’ve all taken, not just me. Giampaolo is a good coach, but this choice was made for the good of Milan. We want to get results together with the play. If you see that you can’t push any further then you think about making a change.

“My work at Milan? I work to make Milan great again. I’ve been here for a while, we have to work hard in all aspects. Giampaolo? When things are not going well, the culprits are all: the coach, the players and us directors. The firing is a defeat for everyone. To Marco, just after his arrival at Milanello, I said, ‘I hope to leave this city with you’. I did the same with Paolo [Maldini], who I’m with in the office every day. We hope to do well now with Pioli.

“The Rossoneri project? We need time and we’ve always said that, no one said we would make it right away. We are a young team, we are the youngest in Italy. We have not made any declarations. This is the case in every line of work. We know what needs to be done, but it’s a process. We can’t say, ‘those phenomena Paolo and Zvone are there so winning is compulsory or for granted’. We’ll do our best, maybe in our third year we’ll see a better and more competitive team, a team who will try to play better and better with each day that passes. If we’re a good team, we’ll understand certain things more than others, otherwise someone else will succeed.

“The young players? It’s not the same football that it used to be. We hope to be good and to understand things before others.”

Boban also spoke to Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel: “The hope of seeing a Milan that plays well? We really hope so, the hope is to see a Milan that plays well and that produces results. It’s a difficult moment, we have to suffer to get results, we’re suffering a bit too much and we hope to change course.

“Pioli? He is a serious person, an intelligent and mature man, a strong man. He’s a very experienced coach, he’s always played his teams well, with results that are sometimes of a great level and sometimes less, but it’s normal. We hope that with us he will achieve great results.

“The fact that I don’t regret coming back? I do not regret anything, I would always make this choice again, and we just began. Milan is a great club, for some years now there hasn’t been what the fan would like but it takes time to rebuild.”

Doesn’t make sense to me. You know you need time yet you sack a very coach after 7 games cos results were lacking. Your statements look contradictory to me. If it’s a 3 years plan, stick with a 3 years plan. What Giampaolo will achieve with this team in 3years, Pioli will not, no disrespect to Pioli, it’s just the truth
