Boban: “Milan are in a gradual process, Rebić has lots of character and lots of strength, we didn’t find the economic conditions for Correa and we never got to concrete things with Modrić”

Zvonimir Boban spoke to the press after finishing his first mercato as a director.

The transfer window officially shut down last night and Milan completed it with the signing of Ante Rebić from Eintracht, sending André Silva the other way.

It was the first mercato that was led by Technical Director Paolo Maldini and by Chief Football Officer Zvonimir Boban. The Rossoneri signed six new players and strengthened the squad of Giampaolo.

“It was a heavy mercato, I hope that FIFA will shorten it a bit. These dates stress the team, stress the coach, players go and players come,” Boban said in an interview with Sky Italia.

“Rebić? He is a player with lots of character and lots of strength. He can play different roles and he’s shown that he knows how to play at the highest levels. He can play as a winger, as a second striker or even as a ‘free-striker’, without giving points of reference. In short, you can use him in many positions. He’s a serious guy who’s grown up a lot, also technically. Speed and shooting was there, but he’s made a lot of progress. We’re happy that he’s with us.

“It was a mercato of young players? The business strategy is that. But this is Milan. Young players are good, but they must be accompanied by players with experience and strength. We have some in the squad and some young players who have become leaders, it’s a nice mix. We have many young players, perhaps it would’ve been good to have a few more experienced guys. We are convinced that we’ll improve a lot. Our game will also improve and Milan will return to where they need to be. But we’re in a gradual process. Milanisti have been waiting for a long time. Neither Paolo nor I want to wait so long to make great things happen. We cannot accept have to navigate in mid-table. We must have the right ambitions. You don’t get to the levels where you once were in one day.

“Luka Modrić and Ángel Correa? Luka is a great Milanista, he’s an extraordinary player but he was improbable. He may have been passionate about coming but we never got to concrete things. He didn’t want to leave Real Madrid after a bad season and credit to him. We didn’t find the economic conditions for Correa. We negotiated with other players in the same position. Who knows if in the technical developments the choice we made is not a good one… we’ll see, we have a good squad. We will see over time if we’ve done well or badly, but we believe that there are players who will become important.

“Elliott? I didn’t hear from them at all [laughs]. We worked hard during this transfer market. We organized ourselves, we wanted to give an important sign of improving the structure and improving. A player of €100m alone does not change your team.”

Sorry dude I have no confidence in this Milan side firstly as long as Suso is in the starting eleven. All our previous coaches have failed mostly because of him and now Giampaolo is failing as well. Secondly Giampaolo doesn’t believe in our best players. He is demoralizing Leao and Paquetá because his tactics doesn’t encourage instinctive creativity. Tell me any player who ever won the Ballon D’or who wasn’t instinctive?

Milan is in joint place with Inter has the best well rounded quality squad in Serie A after Juve. Now that this year is when we ought to have qualified with certainty for the CL. It will likely be that the development of the team will be stagnant because of Giampaolo unless he uses the best talented players that we have. I only judge along the way. I only give my optimism to those who have earned it. Giampaolo is seemingly no genius.

@the big dog, I completely agree, suso doesn’t have the creative mind, vision, and pure physical ability to be the main creative force. He’s not a winger, he’s to slow and not quick enough with decision making. And yes how can you be mad at paqueta for being too Brazilian! Imagine if we had kaka still. He would be on the bench with gianpaolo here. And yes leao has been given zero confidence. Why get rid of cutrone for a player you have no intention on playin. Oh and now piatek has to play every game bc we don’t have… Read more »

I am not antagonizing you, but if you know football then you can understand that Kaka was one of the most tactically disciplined players ever played for Milan. Paqueta and Leao must grow and understand the limits of their body and potential befor being given the admission to roam their areas and improvise. Kaka was not only roaming his area, he was reigning it.

I don’t care very much for the opinions of other Milan fans opposing these guys. This has been our first mercato in so many years that the club had a transfer plan and actually followed through with it. The theme was good young players with potential resell value whether we choose to sell or not. Not one single player who didn’t fit the profile. No one was brought in for 30m or more and no one above 25. What we need now is patience, let the coach work. I know Milan fans have good reason to be weary of that… Read more »

I still don’t believe they could get same valuation for Andre Silva and Ante Rebic. Their market values are far apart (Silva 25M, Rebic 40M), not to mention their recent performances. Rebic is way more versatile and also better defensively. It is such a very good deal..
I don’t know if we can be so optimistic this year. If we look at the mercato we are left behind (by Inter and Roma especially), so the competition is getting tougher compared to last year. Let’s hope all the best for Milan.

Hopefully Rebic turns into a Bonaventura type signing. Bonaventura was only signed because we couldn’t sign Biabiany, and on the transfer deadline. He’s proved so useful throughout these years.

Well I agree the fact that one does not get to the standard he was before in a day and I hope we will get there gradually Am happy now we were able to get Rebic instead of Correa but getting the 2 would have been wonderful meanwhile you guys have done great and let hope we will do better than last season. My advise to our players and management is to be hungry for victory and see a lost or even draw as something degrading to Milan. If we can put away laziness and fear during our matches honestly… Read more »
