Marco Giampaolo expects ‘to see the things that we have worked on’ as the Diavolo are set to face Bayern Munich.
Milan take on Bayern at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday (03:00 CEST).
The Diavolo made the trip from Boston, where they’d been training for a few days, to Kansas City. Coach Marco Giampaolo, sitting alongside Andrea Conti, spoke to the press ahead of the game:
“It will be a high-quality affair. We’ve been working together for 10 days and I expect to see the things that we’ve worked on. Between traveling and everything else, we’ve always been dealing with the clock. But I’m confident, the team has worked very well and with dedication, with a sense of responsibility. We’ll pull something out and these are matches that will tell us where we are, where we need to work and how the interaction between the players continues.
“The International Champions Cup? It’s really well-organized, and the matches are of excellent quality too. Playing fantastic sides in a big tournament allows you to grow. When you go up against top-level teams in important events, you also these about how to organize the pre-match. These are moments of growth as well.
“The match against Bayern Munich? Beyond the physical condition and a reorganization of things, it’s a good game where we need to have fun and where I’ll evaluate the growth of the players. We don’t know what the physical condition is. We’re going to need these games. The result interest me relatively, I’m interested in the quality of the performance, the desire to play the part of protagonists which must be our mantra. We have a lot to go and these are games that will allow us to make assessments, better each time, more relevant each time.
“The starting XI? I think about the team to start on Sunday mornings, when the matches are played on Sunday. This is the last thing I consider. There is no Giampaolo football philosophy, there’s football, a way of being of playing football. I have my idea of football and the players are there to put it into practice with their qualities. I am no inventor. We want to play the part of protagonists, it’s a long journey. We all need to know what to do to achieve important results. We have only been together for 10 days, we still have a lot to do.
“Piątek? I had known Kris as an opponent, now I’m getting to know him as I’m coaching him. He’s a complete player. He has power, technique, great hunger to score, he knows how to attack the spaces. I’ve liked what I’ve seen over the past ten days.”
