Marco Giampaolo expects ‘to see the things that we have worked on’ as the Diavolo are set to face Bayern Munich.

Milan take on Bayern at Children’s Mercy Park, Kansas City in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday (03:00 CEST).

The Diavolo made the trip from Boston, where they’d been training for a few days, to Kansas City. Coach Marco Giampaolo, sitting alongside Andrea Conti, spoke to the press ahead of the game:

“It will be a high-quality affair. We’ve been working together for 10 days and I expect to see the things that we’ve worked on. Between traveling and everything else, we’ve always been dealing with the clock. But I’m confident, the team has worked very well and with dedication, with a sense of responsibility. We’ll pull something out and these are matches that will tell us where we are, where we need to work and how the interaction between the players continues.

“The International Champions Cup? It’s really well-organized, and the matches are of excellent quality too. Playing fantastic sides in a big tournament allows you to grow. When you go up against top-level teams in important events, you also these about how to organize the pre-match. These are moments of growth as well.

“The match against Bayern Munich? Beyond the physical condition and a reorganization of things, it’s a good game where we need to have fun and where I’ll evaluate the growth of the players. We don’t know what the physical condition is. We’re going to need these games. The result interest me relatively, I’m interested in the quality of the performance, the desire to play the part of protagonists which must be our mantra. We have a lot to go and these are games that will allow us to make assessments, better each time, more relevant each time.

Krzysztof Piątek during training. (@acmilan.com)

“The starting XI? I think about the team to start on Sunday mornings, when the matches are played on Sunday. This is the last thing I consider. There is no Giampaolo football philosophy, there’s football, a way of being of playing football. I have my idea of football and the players are there to put it into practice with their qualities. I am no inventor. We want to play the part of protagonists, it’s a long journey. We all need to know what to do to achieve important results. We have only been together for 10 days, we still have a lot to do.

“Piątek? I had known Kris as an opponent, now I’m getting to know him as I’m coaching him. He’s a complete player. He has power, technique, great hunger to score, he knows how to attack the spaces. I’ve liked what I’ve seen over the past ten days.”

This milan has an identity, some focus and direction. We are changing and it’s great to see.

Tell me about it. “Football” + “ideas” – two things that haven’t gone together at Milan for a long time.

I’m almost tired of hoping every season for this Milan now. We are just not getting our jobs done correctly at all. One of our major problem last season was the lack of perfect wingers, another transfer window is here and I can’t see nothing or hear anything about that.

Well Striker, giampaolos formation will most likely be a 4-3-1-2 so we wont be playing with wingers unless we are forced to change formation or god forbid ends up changing coach mid season. Correa main position is right winger but can also play on the left if joining but will most likely be playing as second striker so even if suso leaves we will still be covered in that position. Besides of that bonaventura can play left wing if necesarry and so can castillejo even if unlikely staying at the club. Borini as well but propably also unliekly to stay… Read more »

I know the feeling of tired optimism, but this time feels different. The players purchased actually seem to be for a purpose. The caballos deal didn’t happen because Madrid wanted a dry loan which the Milan management felt didn’t align with it’s purpose to build a young group to establish a brand. It looks like gone are the days of last ditch transfers and now we are at the beginning of a revolution. We will probably start slow, but we should build momentum as the season progresses and we will end strong!

No registration required on Hesgoal and those on rojadirecta WHO demands it you can allways skip as Theres numerous links over there.

Ironically the team was garbage, understandable when almost everyone was played out of his role. Understandable for another year zero. I’m hoping we will be ready by August
