Gattuso: “A performance to forget, we’ve been in decline for a month, I’m worried and puzzled, we’re struggling mentally, technically and physically”

Gennaro Gattuso said ‘I am the captain of this boat and I am the one with the most responsibility of all’ after yet another shameful performance, which got Milan out of the Coppa Italia.

Milan won just one time in their last seven matches in all competitions and the performances of Gattuso’s side seem to get worse and worse with each passing week.

Last night the Rossoneri, with a 3-4-3 formation, took on Lazio for the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final. The Biancocelesti were in the driver seat for the entire game and in the first half forced a number of a great saves from Pepe Reina, who started instead of Gianluigi Donnarumma and was the Diavolo’s best player.

In the second half, Milan were even poorer and Lazio were in complete control. In the 57′ minute, the Rossoneri took one of their famous terrible corners and this corner resulted in a Lazio counterattack which ended with Joaquín Correa beating Reina to give Lazio a much-deserved lead. Milan tried to get back in the game, but showed very little fight, very little brain and absolutely no imagination or creativity. And so the game ended with Lazio winning and qualifying for the Coppa final.

The only thing uglier than the display of football shown by Milan last night was the group of fascist and racist Lazio fans who sang choirs against Tiémoué Bakayoko and had racist slurs directed at him.

“In the first half we held out well, then Lazio came out. In the first 10 minutes of the second half we conceded three chances,” Gattuso told RAI Italia in the post-match press conference. “We’re going through a moment that is like this, we are struggling but we must turn the page. On Sunday it’s a game of ‘in or out’. We need to understand clearly the decline that we’re going through. Lazio deserved to qualify and the fans deserved something more.

“The game? There is little to analyze, Lazio deserved the win. In the first half we were organized, we created little but we weren’t suffering. In the second half Lazio were superior. Right now my team is struggling and it shows. We have tried to find new solutions but what we’re doing is not enough.

“The change in formation? Sometimes you change just to do something different, to improve the performance, lift the team. Something isn’t working and we’ve been struggling for the last month. I don’t think it’s just physical, but also mental and tactical, as we are performing below our capabilities.

“How to get out of this moment? Also on Wednesday we tried to play a life or death game, but it didn’t work. Lazio were coming off a difficult moment too, but we made it easier for them. We started well but we must have the lucidity to understand what is not working and look ahead.

“There’s no point denying it, we take responsibility, we embarrassed ourselves. The head is on Sunday night, we must have the strength to get out of it, we have one month left until the end of the season and we have a duty to do our best. The trip to Turin? We must recover and not blame this or that. The responsibility lies with everyone. The most important thing is to be able to recover our energies.

Krzysztof Piątek during Milan-Lazio at Stadio San Siro on April 24, 2019. (@acmilan.com)
Krzysztof Piątek during Milan-Lazio at Stadio San Siro on April 24, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Piątek is getting little service? Even when we play with to strikers we don’t improve… it’s not about individuals or formations – it’s a decline of the entire team, we play with the handbrake on and we’re paying for that. The problem is not tactical, the problem is how we approach the games. We need to improve on this aspect… if we focus only on the strikers then we are on the wrong track.

“Paquetá? He is an important player, but the whole team was working well [when Paquetá was playing regularly]. There has been a decline. The loss of Paquetá was important. He is training with us and we hope he can give us something in the last games.

“My choices? When I make choices no one forces me to do anything. We have the wrong approach to games, even if I didn’t mind the first half as we didn’t give the pitch to Lazio. We started the second half badly, but I would’ve made the same choices. I imagined a different match.”

Gattuso also spoke to MilanTV at the end of the game at San Siro: “Not much worked, we struggled in attack and in defense. We didn’t run any risks in the first half but we started slowly in the second and let them get up the pitch straight away. In the end, it was a performance to forget. I saw that we were worried and demoralized in our attitude, it showed in the goal that we conceded. Mentally, technically and physically, we’re struggling a lot, you can see that.

“Caldara? Mattia had a good game, he only needed one opportunity and he took it well. He had the freedom to play from the back and did so well. Piątek? The problem isn’t about Krzysztof or his lack of supply but it concerns the whole team. When we can’t get the ball to Suso and Castillejo, the whole team is left vulnerable to counterattacks. It’s everyone’s problem.

“Torino? We suffered a heavy blow, we’ve disappointed our fans who turned up in great numbers. Now, we must do well to regain our energy so that we can bring the fight to Torino, a team that bring lots of energy and physicality to the pitch.”

In the post-match press conference, Rino added: “Piątek? We’ve been having a decline for a month now. At the first difficulty on a physical level or at a technical-tactical level we’re struggling… Piątek’s performance reflects the moment we’re going through. Caldara? I think he just needed an opportunity. He was good at being ready and was very good in defense and in the build-up.

“If it’s more of a physical or a mental problem? They go hand in hand. In the second half we entered the pitch badly. I’m worried and puzzled by the fact that all the games have been similar for some time now. If I think that I can change the inertia? We are trying to do different things. The biggest concern is how we react. We saw a bit of light against Lazio [in Serie A] and Juventus, then we took two steps backwards. If I feel that I still have the team in hand and that it’s still alive? It’s normal that I face some questions. For my part and for the part of all, we are struggling and you can see that.

Tiémoué Bakayoko and Lucas Leiva during Milan-Lazio at Stadio San Siro on April 24, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Mazzoleni did not stop the game when the Lazio fans sang racist choirs aimed at Bakayoko? We must congratulate the players on the pitch. The choirs started in the afternoon. I hope that the referee didn’t hear them, but yesterday we spoke with the players and told them to be an example.

“If I feel entitled to be the coach of Milan? I feel that we are struggling to get results. I feel I’m the captain of this boat and I’m the one with the most responsibility of all. I’m one the first one to be responsible, from time to time this part is hard.”

The last five games of the season are against Torino, Bologna, Fiorentina, Frosinone and SPAL. If Milan don’t drastically improve, it’s very, very hard to imagine that they’ll keep their 4th place.

TONITE ON LIKE MILAN10 SAID
“Milan10
…Besides, only teams like stoke city would play 2 uncreative dm/cm at once. Real clubs always field at least 1 creative mf who can control and direct the gameplay

yeah.
Also, who are u kidding rino? Milan failed because no one could distribute the ball like paqueta, thus hakan and suso looked bad because it was paqueta who was able to trade passes with them making milan attack looked dangerous and creative. Its not rocket science.

I don’t care what you have to do. 4th place is the objective. You have lost us valuable points with your stupidity, get your head in the game and get milan to 4th, after that pack your bags regardless Leonardo has the axe and it’s game of thrones for you mr gattuso aka grinta laughing stock of pathetic football I think Watford play better football than milan lol

Even though many want you gone, it doesnt take away the fact that we have some shit players in our squad. Suso, Samu, Kessie, Conti, Hakan, etc. Unfortunately many milanistas think if a player costs more he must be good, like they overrated Andre Silva who in his life has never had one good FULL season. The same with the freekick kid whom I dont remember when last he scored one.

You do understand that players cost is directly tied to their performance, they dont just get random price tags. So all this players performed great in their previous teams or under different coaches which made them cost that much, and now they are all under performing under Gatuzo so maybe just maybe you should consider the problem is in Gatuzo and not the players. But i guess you would rather blame Piatek for being “shit” and overrated next since he is not scoring in Milan as in Genoa, rather then blaming Gatuzo.

lol, Bale says hie. Kondogbia says hie. Sanchez the highest earner at Man Utd says hie. Oooh the wonder kid Ordegaard earning 80000 euros says hie. In fact Man Utd has spend over 600m euros in the last few years and are still shit. Silva, what is he doing now in Spain. Oooh by the way follow closely our players’ history beore they came to Milan e.g. Samu, dude has never scored more 7 goals in a season but at Milan y’all expect Gattuso to do some miracle. While we are there is it Gattuso’s fault that Hakan cant score… Read more »

Well biology also says hi, players get older so you cant expect Bale or Sanchez to perform same as 4years ago, also their price tag dropped according to their performance, Kongobia price reached its peak after leaving Inter so you are just confirming what i am trying to tell you, also it is normal for some one to be a flop in some team, but every one to be a flop in the same team is not normal, obviosly the problem is not only in the players. O and Man U won trophies with that 600mil how can that be… Read more »

“I’m worried and puzzled by the fact that all the games have been similar for some time now….” Jesus Christ the genius is puzzled… This has to be hands down the worst AC Milan I’ve ever seen. And yet we still have fans on here defending him because “you can’t disrespect a legend.” I’d rather a toilet attendant at San Siro manage the team if he knows how to motivate them, choose the right team and formations, make the right subs, etc.

The last 5games are against Torino, Bologna, Fiorentina, Frosinone and Spal. If Milan (Rino and all his unusefull players) don’t fight to death for wins, it’s very, very hard to dream about UCL next year! I like you, Mr Meytar Zeevi

I want to feel sorry for Gattuso because he’s letting off like he doesn’t know what’s wrong or even how to fix it, but I can’t because he chose to take the job even though he knew that he wasn’t equipped for the position, so yes,you do feel entitled to be the coach of Milan. My major concern is that this team has to rely heavily on individual talents and moments of brilliance to be competitive and that says much about the team setup and tactics, after all, it’s a team sport and it should be about “ the team… Read more »

the root of milan problem is back to berlusconi.the last years he washed away the personality these colours where representing. but milan is a big club.history one of worlds best.thats why the pressure is always big.as the costs are always high to run a club like milan. we have been trying all.buying back old washed up ‘milan’ history players and failed. spend huge on ‘already their time is over players’ and failed over all of that.we gave them too many millions and made them rich. the worst we where so coward to never realt trust our own jewels.sold them for… Read more »

At this point, Ya we’re not playing nice football at all but just get us to fourth. It would be a disaster if we didn’t keep the Champions League spot. I think it’s as simple as if gattuso doesn’t get the 4th he’s fired and if he does get it then they’ll have him under review. I don’t see him staying to be honest but we’ll see what happens. We’ve been linked to sarri, pocchetino, Conte, gasperini. But as I said, the only thing that matters to me is getting that spot. I don’t care how we play I just… Read more »

I really don’t get these kinds of people.
Are you trying to say we did not play well in the first 70% of the season?
Is it really so damn hard to say we played well and now we are playing shit?
It is so damn hard to do some fair criticism?
It is so damn to say Gattuso did some great work after Montella Disaster and now suddenly over the last month he is not doing well?
Is it so damn hard!

Milan play well 70% of the season? are you shitting me?
Milan only play slightly well like 1 game of each month
And it was due to brilliance performance from individuals
First it was Suso, then Cutrone, then Piatek and Paqueta

He just want to be right mate, don’t get pissed by his opinion. He just comes here with Monday’s newspaper and be Captain Obvious. He wants to fit in, and, as he knows little about football and Milan is easier for him to bash the team and say because Carletto this and Pirlo that Maldini would bla bla bla.

You’re not the only one in pain watching Milan fail, and not because you defend our former glorie are you more fan than anyone, neither that makes your opinions actually true. Coaching Milan is asking for a blow to your career. Berlusconi used so many rookie coaches as a scapegoat to keep the brand value high. Berlusconi knew he was going to sell the team and he didn’t invest. He just bough a few players to fool some fans. Fassobelli had to buy a new team, Donnarumma, RR, Mussacio, Conti, Kessie, Hakan all starters under Gattuso. The kind of coach… Read more »

I don’t know how would anyone say we performed better this season. It’s plain simple other teams have lost points if lazio or Roma were performing like last season we would have been staring down at 7 place utmost…..tbh I am screaming since last season that rino with all due respect is a Milano legend but he is not worth coaching a team like milan….we have under performed and dropped points and with no game plans tactics it’s been a worst season…..I love milan to the core but seriously a miracle will get us a champions league spot this season.

I always stood by Rino but saying out loud that they are struggling on all aspects of the game means he failed and so I believe he is saying goodbye in between the lines.

Milan’s downfall started with selling Ibra and Silva, the goodbye of golden age senators and acquiring below par players or bosman players. Mentality Milan once had and values it nurtured, long gone because of that and on top of all, hiring inexperienced coaches.

We’re still there – nowhere, no year zero, no nothing. The only difference is we have money now. But can’t spend a dime

So let me get this straight. Gattuso said it was not an issue with the formation it is the decline of the team. I’m yet to see everyone on a team decline “ALL” at the same time. That’s just impossible actually. If the team is declining it is only because of the type of tactics we are playing. Zero tactics equals declining team. Smh Anyways, no point in beating a dead horse because it won’t move. I’m confident Leonardo and company knows what to do to fix this problem. Milan is a team that is poorly built so with some… Read more »

This season has been more evident what killed Milan. I see two locker rooms, and a lack of leadership in both of them. I don’t think Gattuso hold the team to avoid further humiliation, why wasn’t the team pushing higher and giving their all for the two goals? The coach has been saying it for over a month, he even said the only thing left is for him to get a whip. It’s the players fault to not give their all, and what worries me is the fact that this attitude suggest that players don’t believe in themselves under the… Read more »
