Gattuso: “The Champions League race? There’s some concern but no tragedy, we expected to do more against Parma”

Gennaro Gattuso says Milan were naïve when they made the foul that eventually cost them two extremely crucial points against Parma, and looks ahead.

The Rossoneri thought that their bad spell was over last week when they beat Lazio 1-0 at Stadio San Siro, but Milan’s many problems were again very much evident today as they drew Parma 1-1 away.

The Diavolo were struggling greatly in the first half but Gattuso changed the formation in the second half and so in the 70′ minute Suso found Samu Castillejo with a cross and the ex-Villarreal man scored with a good header.

However, Parma fought back and found a deserved equalizer in the 87′ minute thanks to a great Bruno Alves free kick. At the end of the day, Milan lost an incredible opportunity to give themselves some breathing room and instead find themselves at risk of losing their 4th place in Serie A.

“If there was an involution after the derby and if I’m worried about the crisis? We won against Lazio a week ago,” Gattuso said in the post-match press conference. “The thing that bothers me most is to see how we tackled the game. I saw little vehemence, we were suffering a lot in the first half. We did well and were lucky to find the advantage and then we did something naïve.

“In the first half we were expecting much more. The team has no determination? It’s not a physical matter, we saw a vacant team. It’s not a physical problem, we appeared surprised. We must not talk about a tragedy, but we must analyze why we’re struggling. We must make a few mistakes as possible, there are days in which we leave the first half to the opponents or commit some error. We weren’t suffering after the advantage, we were the suckers to grant that dead ball that we did.

“Why the team entered the field like that? We have the wrong approach, there can be such a day when playing football. We also give Parma credit, they put us in difficulty. If I’m more worried about the draw or the Champions League race? We knew that we could do more. There is some concern, but I’m not desperate. Of course it worries me, I got that taste in my mouth. We conceded a goal from a free kick in the 87′ minute… it’s useless to look at others, we must look at us.

“The formations? We made so many formation changes today. We also played in 4-4-2 because we needed to keep the advantage. We changed again when Biglia came on. Bakayoko? He took a blow, he clenched his teeth a bit but it [taking him off] was a technical choice.

“Conti? The problem was not just Andrea, but the whole team. Paquetá [who was on the bench but was not used in this game]? He returned from an injury [an ankle sprain he suffered against Udinese], because of how the game was played I needed players to give me a physical guarantee.

“If the standings is truthful? In my opinion Atalanta deserve second place for how they play and how they interpret the game. They are always difficult to deal with and in the last 2-3 years they’ve been a thing in Calcio. They’re a team that has ideas, physical strength and is coached by a great coach.”

Gattuso also spoke to Sky Italia: “There are no regrets, in the first half we played with little rhythm. They closed the gaps well and we found very little space. We did well and were lucky to go ahead, then they scored a great goal from a dead ball. They deserved the point.

“We were naïve on the foul of the dead ball that caused the draw. Parma have very specific characteristics, they’re a physical team, they defend themselves in narrow lines and we knew well how they would play. It was hot for both teams, but they had more determination than us at times.

“A bit of humility after the win over Lazio? Maybe I am not a good enough coach yet to let the players realize the importance of these small details. I am objective and like to say things how they are. I expected to come here and do more, albeit knowing the difficulties Parma could cause us.

“The cancelled goal of Cutrone [which would have made it 2-0 to Milan if Piątek wasn’t offside by a few millimeters]? We were also unlucky, it wasn’t very clear. We must look ahead.”

In a MilanTV interview, Rino added: “It wasn’t easy, just as we knew it wouldn’t be. Our performance was sub-par during the first half. We were playing too straight and couldn’t find any outlets. We upped the tempo in the second half but conceded foolishly at the end. We could’ve done a lot more.

“The first half? They had a five-man defense when they didn’t have the ball, however, we knew their style of play. We should’ve done better when in possession, we created chances in the second half though. The management of the game after Castillejo’s goal? They didn’t worry us after Samu’s goal. We were always defending with six against two. It was only one incident that caught us out. We should’ve dealt with the final minutes differently but this is part of football.”

Gennaro Gattuso during Parma-Milan at Stadio Ennio Tardini on April 20, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“The formation? We’d already tried it and we’d had success with it. However, let’s not think about the formation but rather on how we’ll approach our next few matches in the best possible way, without any excuses. It was hot out there, but also for them. We lacked the desire to get on the ball.

“The Coppa Italia semi-final [Milan face Lazio for the second leg on Wednesday night]? We must take it game by game. We’ll now focus on Lazio and I know that there will be more than 55,000 fans in attendance. We can’t put in another performance like that of our first half against Parma.”

Gattuso said “Maybe I am not a good enough coach yet to let the players realize the importance of these small details.” The same small details I’ve pointed out numerous times. I can at least respect a man who is honest with himself unlike some delusional fans who believe Gattuso is not the problem. The players will interpret the football the coach instruct them to play. That’s why teams practice in training. Smh Milan need a coaching change next season to once again rebuild this team. What we saw today was pure garbage football. At this level it is beyond… Read more »

Somebody reasoning live like me here, when we criticize Rino, it’s out of love for Milan and being truthful rather than being a fan and blind to the truth. I remember on this blog calling for the management to get us a coach in Gasperini or Reijkaard, coaches with a track record of impeccable style of playing football, some fans came for my jugular as if they love Milan better. Rino, legend that you are, please just leave at the end of the season, management, please get us a real coach. We seem lucky each time we drop points though,… Read more »

I agree. The soccer that Milan is currently playing is embarrassing to show on the centre stage of champion league.Total rubbish.Gattuso was a an aggressive ball winner as a player but had no soccer skills, as a coach even less. Come on Milan, you can’t be that desperate. Also far too many players are not up to milan’s standard, and that’s another problem. Cutrone BOrini Calabria and many others try hard but they have no quality to play at a certain level. Why allow Calhanoglu to play in a pivotal role. He can’t pass the ball or mtrs.Milan needs genuine… Read more »

Totally agree brother. I believe Milan should get a coach that is good with young players like Gasperini and adopt the same model as Ajax and Atalanta. I would rather if Milan buy quality young players than mega stars like Higuain. Think about it, Juventus signed CR7 and a young Ajax team outclassed them at home and away. The same team that dumped Real Madrid. Imagine what Gasperini can do with quality young players like Zaniolo and Chiesa? That’s the direction I would love to see Milan go in. Gattuso made it very clear that he prefers to work with… Read more »

Definitely not. I was never in favor of Milan offering Gattuso the job even as an interim coach. As a matter of fact I thought it was foolish of Mirabelli and Fassone to even offer him a permanent contract before he finished last season when he took over from Montella. Just like it was foolish of Man United to offer Solskjaer a permanent contract before the end of the season. Don’t be surprised if Man United does poorly next season. Believe it or not Milan played better football under Montella. The problem was that the team was mentally weak. They… Read more »

And yet we are still 4th, despite this horrendous run. In Serie A teams mess up at the end and cannot finish strongly – remember Fiorentina kept losing that season when Milan made the Europa? Almost every team goes like this. And of course Gattuso Out team is vocal now. See out this season to see whether we can finish 4th – I think we will, and then think about things. Several fans here forgetting the fact that Gattuso’s Milan has given some pleasing football and consistent results in the first 70% of the season is unfortunate. If Potch wants… Read more »

The main problem of Milan is the lack of speed. Gattuso cannot make Suso Biglia Hakan faster. When the players get the ball they try to settle and get some confidence with slower indirect passing. Which is actually good for slower teams, but then you need creative players to break down defenses. When you play fast and quick, you can make up for the lack of creative players. But we lack both speed, and creativity (except for PaqMan). Another transfer market (damn FFP) can give Milan chance to set up the team better and address either speed, or creativity –… Read more »

you know what crazy? that people are still defending gattuso blindly.
maybe they should create a new religion with gattuso as a god.
their reason always “hey at least we got a point and our rivals are dropping points too, blah blah blah”
it’s not all about the point
it’s the way milan play
it’s almost disgusting to watch milan play their style, if they have one that is
i can’t even imagine how milan gonna be trashed in UCL if milan are still under gattuso

So don’t imagine it.
And become a coach and replace Gattuso so you can implement your style.
In my not so humble opinion, people trashing Gattuso blindly is equally bad.
You don’t need to be blind. You can acknowledge the good results and then criticise the recent form.

Good results from individual efforts instead of good team play?
current league position from sheer luck since other team miraculously fail to take advantage?

Let me tell you my friend, we have played 33 games out of 38 games. 86.84% matches have been played. The probability of Milan gaining 4th position out of 20 teams out of sheer luck is 5%. Do you know how much that is? If we played 100 seasons, only 5 times Milan may get 4th pos out of ‘sheer luck’. Now, I don’t know about you, but the confidence level of ANY team getting ANY certain position is extremely low. And again, I don’t know about you, but sane people usually don’t bet based on low confidence level. And… Read more »

So with 84 percent games played and with all the point gained and lost by the teams, milan hv 5 percent of getting the 4th place?
I’m sorry if i write this wrong in any way. So by this logic the already relegated chievo hv chance of getting the 4th place? And there is so many variables should be considered even if the chances calculated at the beginning of the season

I agree wholeheartedly with you that you are not good at it mate. It works like this – in any given season every team has a 5% chance to gain any of the positions in table. So by ”sheer luck” you can win scudetto maybe 5 times if you randomly play the seasons 100 times. OR You can be just ridiculously very good and win the scudetto 50 times. That 50 times – is not luck. (because you played so many seasons) Similarly, for Chievo, they have 5% chance of being at 4th at any given season out of ”sheer… Read more »

I think you missed my point. What im saying is the chance of a team to win a league not only depend on the number of teams. There are a lot of variables to be considered.
There is no way any sane person would give chievo 5% chances to win the league, whether he is a matematician or just a drunk

Well, for me Martin there are several ways to go about improving the squad. Creativity is not the only issue, we also lack in goal scorers (apart from brilliant Piatek) and in general, we lack in cover in most of our offensive positions. We lack a real LW for a 4-3-3, and we lack an additional striker or two to play with two strikers up front. Plus, we don’t have cover for Suso which I still haven’t given up on, but I do see where your sentiment comes from.

Pretty much agree on everything and its not that i deem suso completely useless because he deffently has his moments and has been an important player for us but both his form, his buyout clause and seemingly high wage demands does make me question if we shouldnt try to get some young blood in while they can still be bought. in the attack department i would also like us to add an extra forward of some class so we exactly could play with two attackers and switch between them when necessary. Damn Napoli! Anchelloti is clueless, has no tactics, and should switch formation!

Gasparini is really doing a remarkable job with Bergamo’s Atalanta (reminds me slightly of Montella’s Fiorentina); oh the wonders of a stress-free environment. Gatusso and S. Inzagi can only be jealous.

Remember, we count our chickens at the end of the season; this is not for the faint hearted. Even Gatusso with his mild-tempered apologetic press conference seems to be affected by the pressure. I for one choose to still believe, as I don’t see any other choice.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Anchelloti is a great coach, more suited to us than Gatusso (who lacks experience) – I was being sarcastic, and mainly pointing out how “logic” works in this blog.

My second point was that Atalanta have a certain advantage over all othet 4th place competitors in that they are practically pressure-free. This is not to be understood as an excuse – yes, you play for Milan you need to handle thr heat. Nevertheless, our key players (Hakan and Suso mostly, but others as well) don’t seem to be coping with this very well.
