Gennaro Gattuso was pleased after the win against Chievo, the Rossoneri’s third victory in a row, and insisted ‘I have always seen the same Milan’.

Milan hosted 20th-place Chievo at Stadio San Siro on Sunday afternoon and the Rossoneri were looking to win the game so they can go on the international break with a smile on their face.

The Diavolo were in control from the first minute. Gattuso played Gonzalo Higuain between Suso and Hakan Çalhanoğlu and it took the Argentine 27 minutes to find the back of the net for the fifth consecutive game: the ball got to Suso after a very poor clearance attempt from Chievo defender Mattia Bani and the Spaniard passed it quickly to summer signing El Pipita who beat Stefano Sorrentino.

The Suso-Higuain connection continued and in the 34′ minute, Suso sent a great ball to Higuain and the striker found himself again in front of Sorrentino and made the most of it. Suso continued to be the star of the game and he completed a hat-trick of assists in the 55′ minute when he passed to Jack Bonaventura; Giacomo made a nice dribble and then saw his shot take a deflection and go in.

Milan were hoping to finally get a clean sheet, as they are the only side in Serie A to have failed to keep one this season, but a mistake from Cristian Zapata and Franck Kessié resulted in 39-year-old Sergio Pellissier scoring a goal against 19-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma, and making it 3-1.

“Certainly the performances were not lacking, but there were no wins,” Gattuso said in an interview with Sky Italia at the end of the match. “The worst performance was on Thursday against Olympiacos. We made mistakes again today, gifting their goal, but this team has always played good football, it always wants to play the ball and today we are happier because we won.

“We weren’t in crisis before, but we couldn’t finish off games after good performances. At times we run a few too many risks at the back, but we do want to play the ball and keep it moving. We have to work well on the chains, the right chain is now working very well we have to improve on the left, as we were far stronger there last season. We’d like to give more width to the team, not just with Suso.

“When Suso takes the ball there’s always a triangle and Abate did well. Kessié played below par in the first half and wasn’t very dynamic today. Higuain? He is a Champion who can finish, he is a guy who has made himself available to the group, he is demanding but he makes himself loved.

“It’s a team that creates and has quality. We’ve been missing Çalhanoğlu who isn’t going through a sharp phase but he can create many goals for Higuain. Different formations [Gattuso tried 4-4-2 in the last minutes of the game]? I would like to change formations, my staff and I have the knowledge, we’re thinking about it but we have to evaluate many things. We have to work on a defensive level. I’m sorry to leave Cutrone out but we are proving we can also create a lot with the 4-3-3.

“My man management style? I just want players who understand me when I speak, who are paying attention. Not everyone has the same character, some need a pat on the back, others for you to raise your voice at them, and so you treat them all differently.

“The derby after the break? It’s an important match, there will be 80,000 fans in the stands. I’m proud when my players go to the national team, and it is right that they represent their countries. Now we’ll recover a bit of energy and then we’ll face a very strong Inter.”

Speaking to MilanTV, Gattuso, who before last week’s Sassuolo game was reportedly in danger of getting sacked, said: “The judgment are often changed when you win a game, with the three points we’re all beautiful, blond and with blue eyes. But also when we were drawing the team was there, it was alive, and we saw firsthand that we couldn’t manage the games at the best but we never gave up.

“Except with against Olympiacos, we’ve always played well, at least for the last two months. We have to and can improve the defensive phase, but if we create all these scoring chances then there’s a reason and it’s normal to concede something at the back. But I repeat, we can still improve.

“The game? This is how we prepared the match. We have always found the third man free to receive the ball, we played well vertically and moved the ball around fast: this was our secret today, we were in control all over the pitch and created many chances. Sorrentino pulled off some great saves. I want to congratulate the boys, they did well. This is a strong team but we still need to realize this.

“The defense? Today we had Zapata on the field and he wasn’t at his best. He played his second game in three days after months of physical problems. He has given us a lot but we asked him to give defensive coverage. We asked Biglia to play deeper to give Cristian a hand.

“The applause of San Siro for Biglia? I’m happy for Lucas, for the player he is and for the man he is. He doesn’t speak much but he makes everything clear with his eyes. He puts his heart out for Milan. He’s an added value to this team and I am pleased with his performance.

“Clean sheet in the derby? I’ll sign on it. But now I want to enjoy the break because only to think about facing Inter… let’s say that when I was playing I managed it better. We have to keep working, but we’re nice to watch and we have yet to understand the real strength of this team.”

Rino also held a post-match press conference: “If the real face of Milan will be seen at the end of October? Except for against Olympiacos I’ve always seen the same Milan. In football you’re judged for the points you have and it’s right like this. We’ve improved in the management of the games. When you bring 5-6 men forward to develop a move it’s not random, and something can be conceded on a defensive left. We have to improve on preventives and give less to the opponents.

“The goal conceded? You have to see how we concede the goals. We have been conceding for 13 consecutive games, it’s true. Romagnoli? We tried until the last minute to have him on the pitch because Zapata hadn’t played in four months and he had some problems after Thursday. The MRI of Romagnoli was negative but he didn’t feel right with the physiotherapist. He will go to the Italy national team, he will do check-ups and then we’ll see if he will stay there or not.

“The Suso-Higuain partnership? It takes time. The first few times it’s difficult and then the partnership improves. Çalhanoğlu? With the characteristics that Hakan has he can give us a hand and also put Higuain in a condition to score goals. I left him on the pitch hoping he would score; he did, but he was offside. Biglia? He seemed to have a magnet in his feet today, he played a great game.

“The waiting ahead of the derby? It doesn’t allow to work better but it’s also a problem for Inter, we have 12-13 players out. It must be a pride to have so many players going to the national team. The derby brings stress and tension but both we and Inter will have the same problem.”

After a busy period with games every three days, Gattuso and the players (minus those going to international duty) will have a chance to get some rest and then focus on the Derby della Madonnina.

  1. Fantastic game or shitty game I don’t care. All that matters are the 3 points and making it back to champions league.

Good work so far Gattuso and please continue winning. If you do, nobody will have an issue with you.

U didnt just read my comments agai. rino. Apparently ur fast, enthusiastic learner *wink
Well done and congrats for the win btw. And regarding inter, dont worry. as long as ur team can build a defensive wall that can separate opponents attack and mf u’ll be in much better position to win. Inter is good team but very beatable

    • Interesting to see that you are actually getting some hate from people on this blog just because you have that : everything is not peachy attitude.
I am afraid time will come when they are gonna write things like : f you Gattuso or sack that bastard Gattuso… and we are gonna defend him.
Same thing happened with Inzaghi, at the very end he got so many hate….
It’s a sin nowadays on this blog to underline some things that need to improve in order for us to get where we should be… so we all just have to start only praising Gattuso.
All hail the brain damaged… I guess.

        • Not at all mate.. not from my perspective. I am long time part of this blog and I respect people that have something to say even if it’s something that I don’t agree.
But every time I see someone bashing Gattuso when times are hard and then those same people are trying to suck him off when we win one or two games i throw up litlle.
If someone like Ink claims something for two years and even in times when most people (including me) disagree with him , I am going to respect his opinion more than those classic sheep comments that I ussualy see.
Same guys who were talking about different formations two weeks ago are now loving Gattuso’s 4-3-3 and claim it’s doing an amazing job… that’s just slimey for me.

      • Haha, well mate, i think some people just like to downvote me no matter what because they dont like my supposedly brash/arrogant style of writing. Maybe they agree on something i write but they downvote me anyway. I cant really blame them because how can they know that i sometimes write in tongue in cheek manner. They might know if we’re talking face to face but just by reading comments on a blog? Fat chance. I dont blame them and i seriously dont care about this upvote/downvote business. In fact, i almost never downvote anyone here, only when/if guys like sheva the troll (where is he anyway? God forgive me but i miss him, ck and suracho) make stupid racist remarks do i downvote comments.
Some other like to downvote me because they just plain disagree with me. And to tell u the truth, im glad they downvote me because that means i dont share same opinions with them. Meaning i dont agree with “rino/morontella deserves more time”, “suso needs to be sold”, “loca is better version of busquets”, “borini deserves to watch football at the san siro without paying” and garbage like that and im really glad for it.
If saying things like milan should go for conte’s signing means lotsa downvotes then by all means give me all downvotes in the world

        • To be honest with you I do agree with a lot of what you say but isn’t it good crack to argue sometimes?
I miss Sheva to and a lot of what he says is true too just a little harsh
          #bring suracho back

          • Well, on the contrary, having nice arguments/discussions is precisely why im here mate. I wouldnt mind, even if i have to do it with “interesting” characters like ck or sheva the troll. Its always refreshing to know someone else’s point of views, it really expands ur horizon. And maybe, just maybe, people who read can gain something, if just a little bit, from the discussions.
And hell yeah, #bringbacksuracho. His post match analyses are some of the greatest stuffs here hahaha

        • Sometimes, just sometimes, you argue without solid arguments, but most of your comments are ok and yes, there are a lot of haters who thumb down because this is their job. Some of them said that they have been writing here for about 4 years :)) But they didn’t learn anything

          • Well, the great dirty harry used to say, “opinions are like asshole, everybody has one”. I really dont mind.
All i can say is its good to have different opinions so we can have discussions and hopefully discourses as well, all for the good of milan. Oh, and its good to see some of the people who were already there when i started commenting on this blog are still kickin’ it

      • im liking this particular section of this article – milan10, Naz and Sheva commenting, you know it’s going to be a good read then 🙂

  3. Biglia was really solid today.
It’s also nice to see a playing style shaping up. We’re forming an identity.

  4. Biglia was man of the match today, he not only controlled the game when he had the ball but also when he hadn’t, you could see him telling players where to pass to and he helped Donnarumma a few times telling him what and where to pass to next
Biglia has what I call a football brain and without him we’re fucked
Anyone who still fails to see his importance to us shouldn’t comment anymore because they don’t know what there talking about
The team is still making ridiculous errors from a defensive aspect and there’s at least one mistake a game, this time it was Kessie
There’s an argument to be had that we’re somewhat unlucky in that one mistake is always punished but the truth is that if you make any error against the better teams then your going to pay the ultimate price
With Inter up next Gattuso really should be pushing for Roma not to travel with the national team because without him then it’s Zapata and as sure as there’s shit in a dog he’ll make a mistake and Icardi will without doubt capitalise on it
Just a quick word about Suso, is there anyone who still thinks he’s no good???
I’m so sick of idiots talking shit about Suso and Biglia in particular

    • In the last 2-3 matches, Biglia looked like a completely different player. He is now even better than his good period last year. I don’t know what happened or if he was that good in Lazio, but that was such a drastic change recently.

    • Suso is very good. Need to step up with scoring though. He loves to assist buh he should work on his shooting more. Biglia is a silent killer, only those with football brain can understand his style. Even maradona doesn’t like him cos he goes for the one touch passes buh those passes are the link up and they remove those threats in defence. The closest we’ve had since Pirlo. However I don’t subscribe to ur bashing of Zapata. He’s been helpful with his condition. Romagmoli made a mistake too buh trust me Zapata has brain and hes not dead yet. Defenders have to take blame for every mistake whereas striker make wrong touches several times in d game. Let’s respect the defenders. I’m very impressed with mussachio as well

      • Zapata has everything for a center back
He’s physically a big man, he’s athletic he’s a good passer, he can read the game well which is the single most important quality a center back needs and he’s quick on his feet but and there’s a BIG BUT, Zapata loses concentration on at least one occasion every match and that’s his downfall, at a professional level opposition coaches and top strikers know this and the second they see his name on the team sheet they automatically see where they can capitalise

    • Naz, I attended this match in San Siro. The last couple of matches, I was a bit agitated by the performances of Biglia and Suso because Biglia was too passive and cautious in his play, that he bring any additional value to the game. Suso was and is still too predictable, he has to work on it.

That were my thoughts and I think they were fair enough.

BUT, now that I attended the match in San Siro, you will always see a different match than on the TV. Bit every player I bashed the last few matches, they played really good.
Suso, Musacchio and Biglia were really good. Abate, got a lot of whistling. People in Milan are a bit sick of him I believe. Also, the build up play got a lot of reactions, no positive feedback from the people believe me. Gattuso is, and will be very popular.

      • It’s a while since I was at San Siro
The last game I seen was against Napoli 2 years ago we got beat 2-1
Palleta was playing and he was brilliant but people from looking at T.V. bashed him
It’s a totally different game when your there to see it
Suso can be predictable and he’s woefully one footed but he’s left foot is deadly and it works, i agree with what Milan 10 said about Higuain asking for Suso to look up more often, it was a slight dig at him but I’m sure it’ll work
I’ve always liked Biglia and his role is a thankless one which is often overlooked for the more glamourous stuff but its vitally important to us that he plays
As for Abate, the one thing thats held him back his entire career is his inability to cross the ball, in his prime I think if I’m not mistaken he was amongst the fastest 4 or 5 players in the world and with that kind of speed running the wings if he could of crossed accurately he would of been world class even though his defending was also questionable
Maybe at a younger age he could of been groomed as a winger instead of a fullback? If only Milan 10 was around back then to have spotted this he could have said that and no doubt someone would of read his wise words and maybe we would of had a Ryan Giggs type player on our hands (wink wink)

    • Fair analysis about Biglia and Suso. I thought the goal was Zapata’s fault with that awful pass. Also, we need to stop passing back to Donna some many times.

      • Its clearly messie’s fault not zapata’s. He couldve done anything with the ball, even his usual “cover the ball with my body rugby style instead of passing it swiftly even though im surrounded by at least 3 players” routine, but he chose to backpass like an idiot

  5. Rino should have played Mauri or bertolacci while we are 3goals up. At least give them a little playing time

  6. I’m not really into Suso that much I still believe he can be really inconsistent and one dimensional on most of the days but he is the leading assistman in serie A after Chievo display. Well done

    Forza Milan!

  7. It was indeed a good performance, although one against a side that isn’t seria a quality. But dominating such teams is not easy for us these days, so still a sign of improvement. Higuain really makes the difference between this year’s season and last year’s.

But some problems still presist –
    1. Hakan isn’t contributing much.
    2. Can’t keep a clean sheet.
    3. (Related to 1) – our CB pairings are always subpar.

4th place will be hard if these don’t get fixed, especially points 2 and 3.

  8. its so obvious we fans on this blog just continue to hate on people we don’t just like,Zapata was good but some people here still complain and prefers romagnoli like he is perfect ,trust me if Zapata made that mistake romagnoli made in empoli game am sure fans wud have crucified him for ever ,we have a good squad and trust me they are all still adjusting to the game so no one shud be considered to perfect and am sure in no distant time if we can keep our players they will do wonders

  9. Positive team build. If we don’t place top 4 this season we will definitely do it next season. The management even said that they came in pretty late during summer, but with new board and old familiar faces we’re heading towards the right direction.
Excited for Milan both in and outside the pitch. Hope they don’t purchase Bakayoko.

    • Oh no, not this “if milan cant this season then surely they will next season” mentality again. Its been almost a decade now and during this period so far conte has won more scudetti than milan. Enough is enough

  10. Thanks God we won, and the truth was Mr. Gattuso can say everything what he want. I can’t understand why some fucking people didn’t like hin, maybe they were Interista or Juventini! Happy with our win, hehe
