Antonio Donnarumma said ‘better than this it is impossible’ after debuting in the 1-0 win over Inter in the Coppa.
Marco Storari picked up an injury during warm-up and with Gigio Donnarumma unavailable through muscle contracture, the starting shirt in the Coppa Italia Derby della Madonnina quarter final was given to Antonio Donnarumma.
It was the debut of the 27-year-old, who grew up in the Youth Sector of Milan and returned to the club this summer as part of the agreement for Gigio’s new contract.
Things started very badly for Antonio, as Ivan Perišić’s cross hit the goalkeeper, who got the ball into his own net. But luckily for him and for Milan, the goal was called-off for offside. As the match progressed, Antonio felt more and more comfortable and produced a number of fantastic saves which helped the Rossoneri get the 1-0 win over Inter (Patrick Cutrone, 105′) and reach the Italian Cup’s semi-final.
“I’ve always trained at my best and without speaking much,” he told MilanTV. “Hard work pays off and luckily everything went well, I couldn’t dream of a better debut. Better than this it’s impossible. I wanted to seize the opportunity I was given: everything went well, the save on João Mário too.
“We played as a team and this group is really strong, but now, let’s focus on Fiorentina [where he’s likely to start as well due to injuries] with this spirit of self-sacrifice. We had been playing better already in the past few games, the group is solid and finally, we are back to winning ways.”
Speaking to RAI Italia, Donnarumma added: “It’s been two strange days, but it was amazing to start, have my save and have the goal under the Curva Sud, it was great. Gigio’s support? We have an amazing relationship, when he plays I do the same things on the bench, cheering him and everything.
“He was really happy for this victory, he is a phenomenon, a complete goalkeeper and we talk a lot, I tell him to always be serene and keep calm.” Gigio then interrupted the interview to embrace Antonio.

Had that own goal stood and we went on to lose 1-0, oh boy your night and whole career is ruined. I felt for the guy seeing his face before the goal correctly gets disallowed but can think of many fans already firing stones at him at the time. I think people put to much on a single costly error or heroism like Gigis mistake on that Atalanta goal and how people would talk sooo big of some of his saves.
