Niang expected to get starting role against Atalanta, Mexes to partner Romagnoli in defense

Sinisa Mihajlovic has reportedly chosen M’Baye Niang over Keisuke Honda and so there are expected to be two Frenchmen in the line-up tomorrow.

Mihajlovic had a winning team in his hand but injuries and suspensions mean that he has to change things up against Atalanta (20:45 CET kickoff on Saturday).

Giacomo Bonaventura is suspended due to the yellow card he got against Lazio and so Sinisa has to field someone else on the left wing. Keisuke Honda appeared to be a clear favourite to start in the role but Sky reports on Friday evening that it’s actually M’Baye Niang who will be featured in the starting XI alongside Carlos Bacca and Alessio Cerci.

It’ll be Niang’s first appearance with Milan since the 18th of January 2015, when he faced the very same Atalanta. He spent the second half of last season with Genoa before suffering an injury. In pre-season he showed good signs but then fractured his fifth metatarsal in the right foot and faced more time out. However, the 20-year-old is now fit and Mihajlovic is apparently betting on him.

In midfield Andrea Poli will replace the injured Andrea Bertolacci with Juraj Kucka playing on the other side and a recovered Riccardo Montolivo ahead of the defense, keeping De Jong on the bench. There aren’t supposed to be surprises in defense with Philippe Mexes playing next to Romagnoli.

Mexes, after scoring on his first touch of the season against Lazio, will get his first start this year with Cristian Zapata watching from the bench and the injured Alex looking on from the stands. With Ignazio Abate out through injury, Luca Antonelli and Mattia De Sciglio will play as fullbacks while Gianluigi Donnarumma will stay in goal as Diego Lopez has taken time to heal from a knee injury.

Probable XI: Gianluigi Donnarumma; Mattia De Sciglio, Philippe Mexes, Alessio Romagnoli, Luca Antonelli; Juraj Kucka, Riccardo Montolivo, Andrea Poli; Alessio Cerci, Carlos Bacca, M’Baye Niang.

  1. Well mate u are right but we can’t put the team on one person I can’t say am happy that is not in but am glad is not because I want to see how the team will play without him and I also want to see Niang, Mauri, and Suso get their chance and prove every one wrong.
I wish for a better performance and a win, most important is the win .
    Forza Milan

  2. Well the same here I want a clean sheet and better performance but most of all a win is everything and I will also want to see Mauri and Suso get their chance they deserve it.
    Forza Milan.

  3. Im so glad that Miha has the balls to play youngster like Donnarumma instead of Abbiati… Allegri, Inzaghi and even Seedorf didnt have that much balls…

    • Okay. So they should have played Donnarunma when he was 13? When did he join Milan? Next time, count 1 to 100 before making a comment.

      • no, im not talking abour Donnaruma in particular… we had Gabriel, Cristante (ok, he is not that good, but still), Mastalli, Petagna etc.

My point is that Miha has the balls to play Donnarumma, Romagnoli, Niang… And others would just bench them… And play Abbiati, Amelia, Bonera, Muntari, Essien and other load of crap instead of our young talents…

  4. Niang might not be as sharp after been out for a while I would start suso or honda with niang having last 20mins or so when necessary .if do play from start however and fail to perform to your high expectations, dont condemn him and say niang must not play again!

  5. Comment:well said guys what matter new is three point as for Mauri and orders they wil get there chance all we need is patient and bliv in the coach forza milan

  6. Mark my words!! Poli in the line up will mean milan will struggle. Even lose, playing with poli is like playing with 10 men already. Also cerci.. its playing with 9 men.

So 9 men vs 11 men

    • You haven’t watched the last 3 matches I guess. Cerci has been solid and can decide a match with one play on his day. Poli is works hard. Give him a break.

  7. Honda is only good for west ham and the rest…not Milan material….the Italian league is slow but surprisingly Honda can’t cope with the pace ..he is damn slow
