ADRIANO GALLIANI is convinced that the two new signings can impress at Milan under Pippo Inzaghi this season.
Galliani will meet tonight with Inzaghi and President Silvio Berlusconi at Arcore to discuss the next market moves, after completing today (Wednesday) the signings of Diego Lopez on a four year deal and of Pablo Armero on a one year loan.
Lopez and Armero can potentially increase the quality of the squad and with Milan aiming for a top 3 spot in Serie A next season, reinforcement like these are important. Galliani is certain that the Spanish and the Colombian can succeed.

“I believe a lot in both of these players. We know them well, we had been following them for some time, and we appreciate their abilities and I think they will do very well here,” Galliani stated. “Diego Lopez? I don’t want to take the credit because that’s not my style, but the easy-going nature of our rapport with Real Madrid, the friendship I believe, facilitated the move.
“We had asked Carlo Ancelotti what Lopez was like, and we also inquired with (Madrid’s goalkeeping coach) Villiam Vecchi, because he had coached him and nobody knows his strengths more than Vecchi – who is convinced that Lopez is a great goalkeeper. Today (Milan’s athletic trainer and the former head of the Milan Lab) Daniele Tognaccini was very pleased with Lopez’s medical and athletic tests. Pablo Armero? A swap deal (with Napoli) was almost done in January between Kevin Constant and Armero, but when Constant refused to move, it broke down. Now Constant has left & we went back for him.
“Armero is an important player, and he and Zapata are more like two brothers rather than two teammates. Armero told me that Mario Yepes had also spoke highly of Milan.” In the meeting tonight, Galliani will try to get extra budget from Berlusconi.
What I most like in this transfer is that most of dead weights left the squad!! But I think that bringing Lopez was the biggest achievement!! Good work Galliani and Forza Milan !

Well, you can say all that in retrospect, but if a single one of essien, matrix or others had been successes, we wouldn’t be complaining about their purchase, would we? The example is Nocerino, who came for 500 000 and had a great first season.
When there isn’t much money to spend, spend it wisely. Taking chances on many players with potential rather than putting all the cash on one was a worthwhile approach. Alas, not many did live up to the hype…
Oh Vinnie, you are so wrong on this one.. Everyone including my dog knew that players like MATRI AND ESSIEN are a waste of space even before Galliani went after them, so no one was expecting a miracle from players like these, we knew it was failure from the very moment Milan was linked with them and to think the management gave Essien the option to choose whether to stay or leave still infuriates me. What that taxi guy told me about Muntari and Essien was definitely true… It doesn’t last forever though…

Simple answer: Agents rule Serie A. In return for a big name they push these mediocres through. With Milan having limited budget, the agents pushed more of these mediocres through the cracks.

And by the way, with the rumours about Muntari being close to Liverpool. Rather keep him than Essien, currently he is better, benched him in the national squad, plus he bangs in a four-five goals a season.

To be honest, I never really followed Armero & Lopez so I’m still unsure about both of them. But for Lopez, a GK who can compete with (and even demoted) Iker Casillas-callibre, must be someone special, so I hope he’d be a great signing. As for Armero, surely he couldn’t be worse than Constant right?
