PHILIPPE MEXES is happy to be back playing and winning as he compliments Thiago Silva.
Milan earned three points after a good – but not great – game against Atalanta in Bergamo, and Coach Massimiliano Allegri can surely thank his center-backs for keeping Christian Abbiati’s net balls-free.
French defender Philippe Mexes is starting to show why he is regarded one of the best Serie A center backs around, even after coming back from a serious injury, and he is happy with how the team did.
“We kicked off the New Year with a win today, and it was very important,” Mexes told Sky Sport 24. “Playing with Thiago Silva makes everything easier. He is one of the strongest defenders in the world. How am I? I feel much better now. My knee was hurting before and it was hard to play, but now it’s responding well.
“Returning to play after eight months out is not easy but I have to thank the staff who have given me a big hand,” concluded the former Roma man, who is also expected to play with Silva against Inter next week.
“I always try to give the maximum,” Thiago Silva, who was one of the best players on the field on Sunday, told Milan Channel after the game. “When we scored the second goal we closed the game. When we score goals it’s difficult to go and embrace the teammates since then I have to go back to the defense. We’re ready for the derby. It’s a match that can change the league. I hope we can win against Inter on Sunday.”
Adriano Galliani did not spare words on the two great defenders either. “Mexes is back to being one of the best central defenders in Europe and Marino, the sporting director of Atalanta, said that Thiago Silva is the best centre back in the world. If so then in Europe it’s Mexes and of course we mustn’t forget Nesta either.”
Ignazio Abate will be fit for the derby, as confirmed by coach Allegri, while Mexes and Thiago are expected to start together. The doubt remains on who will play in the left-back role against this improving-Inter side.
