THIS mercato drama got me sick. In the last two weeks we’ve been linked from Schweinsteiger to any mammal with two feet and a couple of eyes. In my desperate attemp to try to focus on anything but Mr X, I found my salvation in today’s Primavera play-off against Roma. Hoping to get confirmation on what I saw from the youth squad against Inter, I found myself a little disappointed with our ragazzi performance today. However, I think it’s worth to summarize both the good and the bad from our most promising players.
As mentioned before in the match review, the first half was far from impressive from the rossoneri. They did picked up some pace and will in the second half, and beside from a close attempt by Andrea Ganz and a header by Albertazzi, our younsgters weren’t as dangerous  as the giallorossi. It hurts to say it, but the best team won.
This performance was far far away from the one I saw against Inter, and the whole season for that matter. Against Inter our ragazzi played with a lot of energy and confidence and the game was less one sided than today. We looked superior for most part of the game and some of our youngsters characteristics came to our eyes.
Primavera: Roma 1-0 AC Milan
The Belgian press is certain: Witsel close to Milan
Something was clear for most of them : they are still too young, not mature enough and they lack experience. This goes from players like Albertazzi to Merkel. All of them showed they still miss something to become great.
But enough already and lets begin with their characteristics.
Defense :
Michelangelo Albertazzi : he might be one of the most promising defenders in our squad, and while his marking, his pace and his physique are good, he really needs to work on his focus. He gets lost at times when the other team builds up their attack fast enough but it’s nothing that Tassoti can’t correct.
Andrea De Vito : his qualities for a left back (of his age of course) are pretty good. He has an incredible stamina and good technique, as well as good tactical skills(meaning he knows when to push forward and doesn’t leaves his side too exposed) . However, he arrives a little late to the mark, and he has been outrun enough times for me to say he lacks speed and pace.
Rodrigo Ely : this one is an interesting prospect. He has a good offensive mentality for a CB and helps to build some plays from the back. He was caught misplaced a few times but he is pretty young and it’s nothing that experience itself can’t correct. He is one to follow in my opinion.
Midfield :
Simone Calvano : overall complete DMF, rough around the edges but I see a lot of Van Bommel in him. Good technique, strong and tactically fit. He needs some time to achieve his potential since that position most of the time needs experience to bear its fruits.
Marco Fossati : one of the names that will probably enter the first squad ranks next year. A good midfield, with good vision and pace. Can play in different positions and works hard. I thought that bringing Verdi to the first team would be better but Fossati is more centered, he’s more mature and fits Allegri’s style better. He needs some experience though.
Alexander Merkel : we have all seen that Merkel is good and talented young player. And although he didn’t play particularly well against Roma, I still believe that he should be kept and invest some time and effort in him.
Luca Santonocito : another round up midfielder. He has good technique and good awareness. However his weakness lies in his lack if agressivity and his physical form. A little muscle wouldn’t hurt.
Rodney Strasser : we’ve all seen Strasser’s abilities. He has good stamina and decent technique. In my opinion he is a little like Gattuso since he lacks some spark or imagination unlike our german intern.
Forwards :
Giacomo Beretta : to some it would seem that he is too slow, and although I agree that he lacks speed, I think he has pace and technique. He is a very slick forward for his height and his finishing is really good. It is a shame he’s going to Genoa. I was really hoping to see him play next year in Milan. Maybe in the future, who knows.
Simone Verdi : this ragazzo to me is the most interesting. There’s no doubt hat he is the most talented player on the whole youth squad. He has speed, pace, technique, endurance and creativity. There’s no doubt that he’ll be one of the greatest gems of our youth squad in the following years. However, he’s still too young. He lacks a lot of maturity. He sometimes keeps the ball too long, or he doesn’t always plays for the team (sometimes). This led me to think two things : one that he needs to mature and two that I understand now why Allegri hasn’t brought him to the first squad yet.
Anyways, these are our most impressive younger players, and even though there’s a few more I didn’t review, I know that probably most of the mentioned above won’t live up to the hype, and won’t ever play for our first squad, or they won’t do it for long.
Quite a shame if you ask me, I’d love to see all of them become part of our senior squad, but everybody knows that football is not only a sport but a business as well, and “in business nothing is personal”, so no matter if people grow fond of the Merkels or the Berettas of our squad, if they don’t cut to our standards, they’ll be looking for a new home.
It’s up to them now and for now all we can do is support them.
You can follow me on twitter @Fr_Vasquez.

Most of these players have the potential to become important players for the senior squad. but Milan always do the wrong thing by loaning them out and not keeping them when they come back. It’s OK to loan the players out for experience, but Milan shudn’t sell them. Next year, I want Merkel to play more than he did this season. Hopefully Paloschi will impress for Milan so they can keep him. Barbera Berlusconi said “I want Milan to Focus on the Youth.” (This was when she joined some political thing with her DAD.) I hope she convinces her dad… Read more »
And I heard that Galliani said “We’ll decide Paloschi’s future depending on how he plays against Inter in the Super-cup.” They shouldn’t just judge him on one match. He could get nervous and play shit because he’s too scared of making a mistake.
Great article.
THIS is the future of Milan, not a random dude at 1.83…
I tink de vito, markel, strasser, verdi, oduamadi & paloschi shud b brought 2d match regularly.
Love your article mate, I always thought that a young talented kid like Albertazzi would already be in our squad. I think we need him for CB so he can learn from the best defenders of the serie A.
where online can i stream the Primavera games?
Maybe it’s time we stop making thin air guesses, and just wait and see? Galliani said on video that we are going to make a big signing pretty soon (Witsel is not the big signing) after the primavera loss to Roma which raises different questions about your post. I’m sure whatever he has in mind will work fine. And lets go through your list of primavera players. I think none of them are ready for the first team. There is a huge difference between Serie A games and the primavera games. REally the only one I do like is Strasser,… Read more »
Personally, I love this whole Mr. X mystery. It fills the mind with calcio during a time of year that doesn’t have many good competitive games on. I love the thought of “if he comes, then he could play in the midfield or as a trequartista” and think of all the other possibilities. Apart from that, I do think Milan’s future lies in the Primavera team. Milan’s identity must be built through these players. Our foundation is academy produced, and foreign purchases the finishing touch. A team to follow as an example is the late 80s, early 90s Milan teams.… Read more »
The problem with your idea is that it only works if you have talent coming out of your youth system. Nobody on the Milan Primavera looks to be a sure fire star, many of them look like they will never make it to the top level at all. Why limit yourself to your own youth products? Other teams turn out players as well, use them to your advantage.
yes your right! and i can give a good example too… 1 name : brocchi. LOL
Thats where you scout at a younger age. Buying a player like Cesc at 16 is much cheaper than buying him at 24. Building through the youth takes patience, time, and good coaching. But it is much better in the long run.
Calvano, Fossati, Beretta, De Sciglio and Verdi could maybe all become Italian National First team players for me. Calvano: Great Player future Ac Milan first team and National team, seems a great player ! Fossati: Same to him, he will definitely become Senior Milan member, Next Milan’s Pirlo ? Verdi: Needs to Mature, Get more intelligent in his game, Get more muscles in Balance with his agility and speed, If he do all that, Maybe new Italian Legend ? De Sciglio: Haven’t seen him play, but as i have heard he is really Talented ! Beretta: New Vieri ? Hope… Read more »
I agree with you , that RB had me growing gray hair, it was unbelievable, I saw De Sciglio, he is quite good, don’t know his age though. On the transfer market I say either Asamoah or Witsel. Realistically speaking, any of those two won’t be less than 10 Mill. And I wouldn’t buy Fabregas. Still not convinced that it’s a good idea to buy him. Anyway, thanks for your opinion and evermind the lenght, it means you have a lot to say and you take your time to artuclate your thoughts
OLD MILAN > BARCELONA
The only way we can develop our youth academy is by having reserve leagues. Like an Milan B team… maybe in the second division.
Been advocating that for a long time too……..
The FIGC has to do something. Last term, Albertini wanted reserve teams…but now that he’s out of office, I’m not sure what stance they have. But it has to be implemented. Too many foreign players restrict the youth development, so if Italy want to not end up like England, they have to implement one.
calvano is a young de rossi, i saw him many times.
I have heard lot of praise about Fossati. Some says that he is the best under-18 midfielder in Europe. Lets hope that he really is a gem and can become Milan elites in upcoming years.
Rodrigo Ely, Albertazzi, Calvano and Verdi are descent young players. Lets hope they find their home permanently in Milan.
is there anyone there know something about paulo maldini’s kids?
Christian Maldini is a defender in the Under 15 squad and Daniel is a forward in the Under 10 squad. Hopefully they shall sustain the legacy of their family.
I think they play for the Milan Youth(under-15?) team….but i dont know how good they are
people are saying that christian maldini is a star a the U-15 milan squad! that must be good! :D
Give me witsel nd ganso nd bring back Astori
:o really? stars? i’d love to see them in the no.3 shirt then :D
A strong proponent of our youth system, some of these Primavera players should be at least on the bench and watching / learning from these aging veterans we have. The Primavera players need a new challenge, they need to get their feet wet in some games, it’s cheaper to groom our players than to wait 10 years and then spend 150m to rebuild the squad with players who have never played together. in the 80’s milan was going thru some tough times being relegated twice, but those players eventually grew up and became the foundation of our squad. then bought… Read more »
gansoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Milans Youth has alot of potential. But come-on, you cant judge a player when they’re 17 and 18 years old. And you can’t predict how the player would do in SerieA. Example: Pato came to Milan when he was 18-19. He was 5’7 pretty weak, but he had alot of skill and speed. 3-4 years later. He’s 5’9, he’s stronger than before.(He’s still get’s bullied off the ball by some defenders. But i’ve seen him barge people out the way this season. Something that he couldn’t do before.) And being in and Italian league, you have to be strong. I… Read more »
Not all young players are Pato, Abate or even Paloschi. Some show promise and potential but simply don’t live up to expectations. Remember Davide Di Gennaro? He showed a lot of potential, but really fell off the map. And he was loaned out many times. He flopped at Reggina… says it all really.
