Galliani: “Fundamental to invest in youth”

ADRIANO GALLIANI stressed the importance of investing in the youth system.

Milan used to bring to the world great legends like Baresi and Maldini through their youth system but the system has somewhat failed in recent years as very few players made the cut and joined the 1st team.

Ignazio Abate and Luca Antonini who grew up in Milan are now starters for the team but vice President Adriano Galliani wants more of that and says it is very important to put in a good investment in the youth.

Report: Milan challenge Juventus for Verratti

“We’re proud of everything that we’ve done in the past 26 years. We have been extraordinary, winning 28 trophies,” Galliani said during a press conference. “But the thing that makes this club proud is everything that we’ve done for the youngsters. Football is education. It’s good for your psychophysical well-being.

“We want to dedicate our energy to the youngsters,” Galliani continued. “I’m satisfied with what’s going on in our youth department. Both our Primavera and our Allievi are in the final 8. We’re dedicating important economic resources into our youth department. We’ve brought De Sciglio, Alexander Merkel and Rodney Strasser into the 1st team. Simone Verdi and Oduamadi are playing for Torino. Romagnoli is at Pescara.

“I’m saying all this to tell you that it’s fundamental to invest in youth and we’re trying to do it in the best possible way. We signed De Sciglio when he was 10 years old. We went to Cimiano and paid €500 for him. When Riccardo Montolivo was 7 years old, Francesco Zagatti could see that he would become a great player. But Montolivo’s parents decided not to sell him to us and instead they let him develop at Atalanta.”

Milan over the years have produced some decent footballers even though not many of them broke into the first team. There are many youth products playing in Italy at the moment both in big and small sides.

“If we could create many players like Kingsley Boateng, then it would be great and ideal,” Galliani said of the Ghana man. “Kingsley Boateng was spotted at Milan Junior Camp when he was 10, then he entered our youth system and then our first team. It’s the best possible outcome and result of our youth department.

“The results aren’t the primary objective of our youth system. The objective is to create players that can become a part of the 25-man first team. It’s more important that a youth player breaks into our first team, than winning titles with him youth team. The important thing isn’t to get more points than Inter at youth level. The important thing is that youth players develop well. I’m looking for people who have brought useful players to Milan. I’m looking for those who advised us to sign Ignazio Abate and Luca Antonini. I’m going back to those people who brought us these youngsters back then,” the No. 2 at Milan since 1986 added.

“Winning is very important, but the primary objective is to develop these youngsters in the best possible way. It’s important to follow the loaned out players like Nnamdi Oduamadi, Romagnoli and Verdi. They’re co-owned. Antonini was away for 8 years before returning to Milan. But often it’s decided that youngsters get sold, like it happened with Alessandro Matri, Davide Astori, Donadel, Marzoratti. There are many examples.

“There are many players in Serie A and Serie B who came from Milan’s youth system. I believe that Carmona is one of the youngsters who will be promoted to the first team. Our objective is to prepare the youngsters and then keep them here or sell them to other Serie A clubs. Due to Euro 2012, 7 or 8 Primavera players will be present during the first training session at Milanello on July 9,” he concluded.

Galliani has already announced before that next year’s squad will consist of 25 players plus 2 youngsters. Mattia De Sciglio is now considered a first team member after a positive first season with Milan.

nice that this site is online again. let’s hope that the young players will find a place to play at milan and that allegri gives them chances. he should try to use one youngster every not extremly important match like against teams like atalanta or cagliari

TWF

i agree with u, BBs. where is Kingsley Boateng? this kid has talents. imo, he plays like Faustino Asprila, a great striker from kolombia who played for parma in 1990’s.

ted

Good direction Galliani we need more our own youth products, become a breading brand in world of football, although i believe they’r tellin us this because there’s no money in the club and because of FF coming in this will be our source for players. Good thing anyway

ted

Yanis Bahloul, 18yo AM from Ligue 2 club Sedan-Ardennes could be one of good prospects coming to us

The youth team competition is very weak in Italy. I would rather Milan loan out their potentially great youth players to a Serie B team or Spain 2nd division club teams rather than have them play against other primavera teams. England and Spain has the best primavera youth leagues; but Italy are miles behind in youth quality compared to the UK and Spain! This is why these Milan youth players take so long to develop compared to the youth players in UK, Spain, and South America (Brazil, Uruguay & Argentina Milan must also give these players more chance in the… Read more »

I think your last point is key. I think that the policy of building through youth is the right way to go and I applaud the idea. However, who was the last member of the youth ranks to get a legitimate chance to impress since Abate.

It is great to invest in youth, but what’s the point when you let players like Matri and Astori leave without ever having a chance to make an impact.

Hopefully the organization will back up the sentiment.

nick dude.. you must be kidding when you say england have better youth then italy…

Afanofmilan

England youth is even worse dan ours . They clearly lack talent . And i tink d choice to play youth stems mainly 4rm lack of choice . Luk at it . big teams hardly use their youth players . They would rather buy a proven player

nick

The english clubs youth system is better than the Italian clubs. I’m not bias because I support Milan! Man United have one of the best youth programs that no team in Italy can compare to ONLY Ajax of Holland have a similar program. The same applies to Arsenal! Italy primavera league is one of the weakest youth competition in Europe! If the best Italian youth team plays against the best in Spain or England they will get demolished! Italian teams do not invest in youth players like the clubs in England and Spain! Please don’t comment if you dont know… Read more »

I agree with nick. That Man U system has recently produced players like Cleverley, Welbeck, and the Brazilian twins. They also do a great job of effectively loaning their youth players and allowing them to develop through that route. I am not a fan of Man U, but can respect what they do with young players. There aree a number of important players on the top teams in that league that are home grown. Barca doesn’t seem to be able to stop producing great players from the youth ranks. It is great to invest in youth, but unless you actively… Read more »

Rite now d main talent pool isnt even in spain or s america ,its mainly 4rm germany ( sahin ,reus ,ozil goetze even ba ) france (hazard ,mvilla, belhanda ,giround ,martin ) n holland (eriksen , strootman wijnaldum ,maher )

D-Bo

I don’t disagree. And those leagues are not as financially strong as England or Spain. If you invest properly in youth, it can be effective. Sometimes necessity can force it.

Baffa

Why would you sell Merkel ??? Merkel is our best young player after Elsharawy but yet you decided to let him go.
Am absolutely not happy at all.

Baffa

How do you see a future Milan squad say 3years:

————-Gabriel———–

Desciglio–Astori–T.Silva–????

—Monto–Strootman–NuriSahin

————Merkel———–

—–Elsharawy—Pato——–

Ilka Zufria

———-Gabriel——————

–DeScoglio–TS-Acerbi—Didac V—-

–Axel Witsel–K.Strootman–Monto–

————Boateng—————–

—El Sharaawy——Pato————

Yehez Kiel

why not abate at rb???? hes still 25/26 in three years… he’ll be a beast rb by then!!!

he’s not saying the truth.

wawaw

piscitelli, verdi, cristante, who else ???

Di Stefano

England has better youth players, too much EPL dude. Their youth players are way worser than ours. Italian youth players are better than the english ones. I’d say Brazil and Germany have the best youth players at the moment.

nick

@Di Stefano…I am not a EPL fan but I am not bias either…in europe Italy is miles behind Germany, Holland, Spain, France and England!

Italian clubs do not invest money in the development of youth players. It is better if our youth players play in Serie B than in the primavera!

Only Udinese invest in youth players and that is only because the develop them to sell them later to make a handsome profit.

This is the only club in Italy where youth players are given more opportunity to play, so that they can showcase their talents in Serie A!

kenz

so matri nd astori r 4rm our youth team we must b blind letin dem go nd kipin antonini nw merkel is gone wu wil b d next oduamadi we r visionlex les face t italy ve d weakest youth progame compare 2 england spain germany france nd holand u cnt compare d product 2 dos of d oda country

Afanofmilan

Nick again i disagree . Tell me a big team in england dat plays alot of its youths . Even arsenal buys abroad . Its even worse since they generally have more money dan italy . N it really boils down to if u can buy players .

nick

@Afanofmilan…I understand your point but what I’m saying is that every team including Arsenal buy youth players from abroad but in England,Spain, Germany, Holland, France they give them the confidence and chance to play. In Italy they don’t. The big clubs in Italy puts their trust in experience players rather than youth players! El Sharaawy is probably as good or even better than Theo Walcott but he will not get the chance to develop quickly as he will not be given much of a chance even if Robinho is playing horrible. The same thing happen to Giovinco at Juve and… Read more »

Afanofmilan

Yeah i noe nick . I have mentioned it in the past b4 lukin at iago n juve . But also luk at chelsea and lukaku, man u n diouf , merida and arsenal ,dos santos n spurs .these teams also need to compete dats y i dont rate england higher . France spain holland .yes

yanu

remembering kluivert, davids, viera, gourchuff young n wasted in our team

nuttela

merkel is gonna become world class. we need him the season after the next galliani

bobsaget

They should sell Robinho and promote a youth striker like Comi or Ganz or Carmona. I’d also would have loved it if they kept Merkel, he could substitute Boateng when he’s tired/injured since we’re reportedly moving Urby to LB.

Afanofmilan

If u luk closely ,man u are d exception to d rule . Truth is not evri youth will b a scholes or giggs . So wat happens nxt ? They sell him .
