MARK VAN BOMMEL has joined Milan.
Milan join another champion to their squad – the 33-year-old midfielder Mark van Bommel, as they confirmed today on their official site.
The Dutchman lands in Italy after spending beautiful years with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and he even captained them for 2½ years.
Allegri: ‘Another player could arrive’
Milan suffer triple injury blow
Van Bommel is cup-tied, meaning he can’t play in the Champions League, but he could offer a lot of help in the defensive midfield role following recent injuries to Rodney Strasser and Gennaro Gattuso.
The player signed a short contract, only until the summer. According to reports in Germany, the player terminated his contract with Bayern, and he came to Milan on a free transfer.
A statement on acmilan.com confirmed the move, who will be the third Dutch player in the squad with Clarence Seedorf and Urby Emanuelson:
“A.C. Milan has signed Mark Van Bommel from FC Bayern Munich. The Dutch player has signed a contract that will tie him to the Italian club until 30 June 2011.”
Good luck at Milan!

This is excellent! In terms of a short term solution to the current injuries, we could not have done any better than MvB. Cheap, experienced, a leader, and a holding midfielder in every sense. Great work again by Galliani to spot such a deal.
wellcome mvb.but we need a player to replacement of nesta like vidic or luiz or ramos
1 and 1/2 year deal would have been better. Spending money, abeit only alittle, for only 6months is still a waste.
Welcome MvB hopefully he doesn’t get hurt like the rest of our midfield players. Can someone explain to me why MvB,cassano, and urby can’t play in the champions leage. Also what’s. The offcial website he’s talking about?is it acmilan.com
the reason behind this signing is efficiency. although i do not like this yellow-and-red-cards collector joins milan, i can accept the deal. besides, he will join only until this summer.
@Ben
Bayern terminated his contract as per his request. So we got him on a free deal…
Okay, now that Milan have acquired three players, maybe we should sell a couple, ie Bonera.
Anyway it’s going to be real interesting to see what Milan in the midfield will they play three or four mid-fielders
I’m also worried about boteng, why isn’t he back by now?
This is great. With 3 million we managed to get MVB, Urby and Cassano. MVB is temporary solution till the summer when we will push for Poli and Lazzari. We saved money now but in the summer we will spend big on MF and CB. Papa, Yepes and Silva will do fine till Nesta returns. Ibra is like on drugs. Best striker in Europe no doubt. He will deliver us the long awaited scudetto.
@lance
the reason our january signings can not play CL is because they are what is called “cup-tied”. by uefa rules, a player can only feature for one club during a european season (one full tournament of UCL, EL, Super Cup). MvB, Urby and Cassano have already played european games for their previous clubs this season. and yes milan official site is acmilan.com
This is bullshit, are milan gonna play 4-6-1?
v.bommel???? why we already have gattuso flamini?
Merkel wont get any playtime anymore. We still havnt replaced kakas place. our midfield together is now 250 years old. Great. no disrespect to v.bommel but we dont need him. What we need is an AMF.
@ben. Ok thanks that’s a stupid rule :(. And ok I thought it was acmilan.com I didn’t know if there was a different one
@Sherva MVB has come in until the summer to help with our rather long injury list in midfield. Strasser and Gattuso are both out for a number of weeks, so we can utilise MVB in Serie A while still being able to maintain some ‘freshness’ in the midfield for CL games. I hope Merkel still gets some game time, and he is more useful in the attacking third than our other central midfielders. I see Merkel more as a replacement for Seedorf (who is injured also) and can be used in a more advanced midfield role if needed. Bear in… Read more »
@Shervin
Seriously man, you need to chill. Even with his age, for a player of his calibre and experience, a free transfer and a contract until the end of the season is really not that bad. I’d rather have a proper Defensive Midfielder covering for the current injured ones and put Silva at the back where he is most effective. With some players leaving at the end of the season, surely we’ll get better players then. Relax.
relax guys we got MVB for free and he is gonna be with us for 6months, in summer we will release him
c’mon dude,what we need now is support wht uncle galliani did to make this team are solid,enjoy the match but don’t forget to kick seedorf from team!
a good analysis of this move here http://dailymilan.com/news/official-mark-van-bommel-joins-milan-from-bayern/
I’ve never liked Van Bommel to be honest. When we had to play against Bayern he always pissed me off, but maybe just because he’s a good player and honestly I think it sucks playing against such a midfielder. You have to put this transfer in perspective, we are lacking 5 of our best midfielders at the moment, so actually this transfer is perfectly timed. Van Bommel is a player with experience, he’s determined and okay, he’s old. But consider this transfer as a solution on short term, until Boa, Flamini en Gattuso return.
Van Bommel is a player with experience. He’s coming for half a year, because of the injures, and for free. I think it’s a good transfer even if i don’t like him, the team is actually needs him now, with 6 injuries on the midfield.
signing him is a shame for great Milan.
finally…last reinforcement till the end of the season.
This is what i called a tactic-based purchase..
no need time to adapt i think, more leadership, so i guess one of the holding midfield will be taken by MvB.
Let see their first outfit (hope against Sampdoria)
@ guys who object this move:
I don’t deny that Milan need to give more time to Merkel, Strasser etc, but do you want to see those youngster happy or we happy ourself? Of course i want to refer the Scudetto. With Merkel, Strasser – who lack of experience, especially in the final weeks, which will be very nervous and difficult – it’s a big risk. MVB can fill the gap of exp. By now, i don’t want anything than the Scudetto. Win first, build later.
I also don’t agree with those who disagree with this move. I mean you can tell galliani is going for young players but with all these midfielders out injured why not add a very experienced and still well playing champion to the roster…FOR FREE!
We will definitely get our money’s worth out of him and i wouldn’t mind him staying until June 2012 if neccessary.
This is crazy! i mean, a big player like Van Bommel was happily terminate his own contract and join Milan for FREE instead end his career with Munich?! man, Mr Galliani sure had some ‘mumbo jumbo’ skill eh :D For the people who reject this move and want to see Merkel and Strasser have more playing time, yes, i’m 99% with you guys. But think about this. We still got THREE big competition and our squad right now is like paper-thin with lots of injured player here and there, include Strasser. So Bommel can cover this for a while. Besides,… Read more »
Very good move. Now we’re ready to win the Scudetto and Coppa Italia. We probably can’t win the Champions League but as long as we beat Tottenham and reach next round (and another round if against a weaker opponent) then I’m satisfied.
Please haters, i feel the same way u do but let us see MVB as a last minute help to the team.
I belief MVB will give his best seeing seedoff on the bench.
Allegri need to play two youngstars in midfield along an experienced so they can learn fast as there is no time to carry along the OLDIES. Inzaghi, seedoff, ambro, gattuso should hang their boots. It makes me sick at times to see Milan players dont want to retire after much good years, they now become flop, inefficient and now hated by fans.
Love Milan
4rm lordzuru.
Trust me, I don’t like Van Bommel as a person, and I hated him during the world cup. But, I still recognize he is a good player. And a six month deal was a good deal for Milan. Van Bommel came to us at no cost. The haters will publish whatever nonsense they want. This may have been an important move. Strasser, Ambrosini, Gattuso, Flamini, Pirlo, and Boateng are all absent for the Coppa game against Sampdoria. No doubt, we will recover several of those players soon… but Van Bommel is still needed. Merkel will get another chance to play… Read more »

Lance, Cassano can play in the CL. Sampdoria did make it to the group stages of the Champions league so he can play. But MvB and Emanuelson can’t play. but Cassano can.

sampdoria played werder bremen in the final round of CL qualifying, i believe that still counts as a CL game but i am not sure.
Up milan fans out of here… U really impress me well i can’t say anything about this guy MVB Well i love this guy a good DM so guys let joins hands together support milan and let’s thanks uncle Galliani Good Job i luv that.. Guys wat did u think about this guy cal Ganso? Can anybody tell me about this guy pls
The majority of us rather have young players to build a future team, as the majority of us are not happy that we signed a 33 year old player. At the end and based on Milan’s current situation with the injured players. I hope that MVB will give us a great addition with his skills and experience to wards the team. If MVB physically is in good condition then I think that he will add value to the teams contribution. This could be a good choice after all; MVB welcome to Milan and thank you Galliani. Fora Milan
Milano Q8, nope. We needed immediate cover, and it’s very difficult to get young players to move in the January window. We do have younger players like Strasser and Merkel. And other more experienced ones like Boateng and Flamini. Most Milan fans I talked to are happy we signed Van Bommel because he adds a lot of experience and strength in our midfield… and depth.
Great temp solution. I was getting worried about the midfield. Too many injuries. Its pretty weird the he would rather end his career at Milan though. I guess he just wanted to experience a new league before he retires.
im really happy and grateful to galliani this season, MVB xan only bring us good thing as he have experienced to cover our injured midfield and gattuso will be fresh to fight in very ucl matches! And dont worry about strasser, he’ll play for sure because gattuso, ambro already can be labelled as injury prone and strasser will have great influence from 3 of the best dmf in the world! How lucky he is! Now allegri can do some rotation to keep the players fresh in every competition
Everyones happy that he is a great signing just for 6 months, now how long does he take to adapt Milan style of play and the tactics of Serie A is a million dollar question.The problem here is 1) If he really does good and excel in his position then he might continue to be a Milan player for sometime and that might hurt the chances for upcoming youngsters. 2)Just think of the mindset of the younger players, they might have already start thinking that Milan dont trust them and wont give a chance to prove. 3)If Van doesnt perform… Read more »
He captained a top team of Bayern… all the way to the CL final, and took Holland to the finals in the World Cup. He’s not a joke of a player. He’s not one that takes a long time to adapt. He’s already played in several countries. So a 6 month contract to this player will go down as a “big joke” and tarnish the reputation of Milan? Pleasseee. Get real.
@Shervin The thing is that I totally agree with you. For me Milan felt always like a family and it is important to me at least that the players there are respected and really guys who are or will be professionals some day. Bommel on the other hand is the type of player that I detest the most. If you guys take a good look at his games, he playes almost in the same position in his teams as Gattuso in Milan. However while Gattuso does it with class, hard but still a fair ways, Bommel does it brutally, without… Read more »
Van Bommel might be rough… but he is effective in what he does. People will criticize him… but he’s not the one that was the bad one in the WC2010. It was Nigel De Jong. Now if we signed that guy, I would be pissed. De Jong is a total thug. He broke Ben Arfa’s leg, and of course was famous for that kick he did into Xabi Alonso’s chest.
@Tita I’m sure youngster will have more time, but we can’t risk their body for playing three times a week. And please understand this: do you want to see all of them like Pato, who only play a couple of match then got injured for a long time? . Besides, this is a pro league and we can’t just toy with some experiment, walk away, and think that will 100% success. This is real!not a video game! and if Milan lose in here than it’s not just made some bad effect for Allegri but to all Milan element (fans, sponsors,… Read more »
I know this is Real not a video game, but when playing Seedorf and Bonera it looks badder than a vidoe game
@Master
Make no mistake, I understand the necessity, but need not have to be happy for signing him.
Could compare the feeling to the selling of Kaka, sure they needed money but that did not resolve the bitterness of the situation. Same here… hope this injury crisis stops and they gonna recover soon…
ACTUALLY, Sokratis did play the role of defensive midfielder EXTREMELY WELL in the world cup… even keeping Messi quiet. It’s always an option… but right now we need him as a centerback. Luckily, Flamini, Strasser and Ambro will be back soon… as will Boateng. Hopefully by the next game.
@Ben- I was told it that unless you qualified for the main group stages of the CL, you would be allowed to play. That’s what i was told though. I’m not positive but its also logical. you could be right though
