THE UEFA Champions League playoff draw took place and Milan will face PSV in the final qualification stage.
Milan finished the 2012/2013 season in third place, thanks to a very late Philippe Mexes goal against Siena, so that means they have to qualify to the Champions League group stage through the playoff games and today the draw took place.
The Rossoneri were a seeded side and could only face teams from the league route (clubs that didn’t finish their last season as champions of the leagues) and the draw has indicated that Milan will face PSV Eindhoven in the playoff stage.
The first match will take place at the Philips Stadion in the Netherlands on either August 20th at 20:45 CET. The second match will be hosted by Milan at Stadio San Siro on August 28th. Eindhoven finished the 2012/2013 season in second place in the Eredivisie. They sold Kevin Strootman and Dries Mertens this summer but still have many dangerous players.
Milan and PSV previously played each other six times in the Champions League. The Milan record is three wins, one draw and two defeats. The sides met in the 2004/2005 semi-finals. Milan won on away goals after a 3-3 draw on aggregate but lost to Liverpool in that (in)famous final. Milan were hoping to avoid PSV and Fenerbache in this round but could only avoid the latter. If Milan win the tough battle they’ll earn €8.6m from the UCL group stage (excluding money from the market pool).
The rest of the Champions League, league ruote, draw sees Olympique Lyonnais facing Real Sociedad, Schalke against Metalist Kharkiv, Paços de Ferreira versus FC Zenit St Petersburg and Fenerbahçe SK against Arsenal. he participation of Fenerbahçe SK and FC Metalist Kharkiv in the competition is subject to pending disciplinary and CAS proceedings.
Milan have never conceded a home goal against the Dutch side and they will hope not to concede on August 27/28 either and make it to the next stage. The draw for the champions route was also made on this day and the results are below.
