Paolo Maldini spoke to the press before the Bologna game, discussing the goals of Milan and the transfer market.

Milan started their Serie A campaign on Monday evening against the Bologna of Siniša Mihajlović at Stadio San Siro.

Before the match, director Maldini, who has been conducting the Milan mercato this summer, spoke to Sky Italia:

“The objectives of Milan for the season? As a director, like in life, there is always something to learn. The objective is to improve.

“For many years, the proclamations at the beginning of the season have spoken of Milan in the Champions League but we haven’t qualified for seven years. Something positive was created last season and it has continued this season with the confirmation of Pioli. The fruits must be seen. This season we haven’t been asked to qualify for the Champions League but instead to be able to get close and to try. There are teams more equipped but if we have the chance we’ll try. We don’t set limits for ourselves, but want to build on what we saw in the closing weeks of last season.

“The choices on the mercato? We had some priorities and achieved those targets. We have an idea of how to build this team, shared with the club owners. We tried to get the best players available and also keeping an eye on the finances, so we are consistent with the way we approached things last term.

“A center back? We hope to still have two qualifying rounds of the Europa League and if we qualify then we’ll have a very intense season. The priority right now is undoubtedly a center-back because we have two of the five central defenders out due to injury and we have Duarte who has just returned after 7 months out of action. In midfield, with Tonali, we are more than calm.

“The names circulating? To be honest Milenković and Ajer are not among the names that we are working on right now. They are part of the list but there are also other profiles.

“Growing as a director? I do feel this responsibility for my past, for the bond my family as with this club and for the fans who consider me a guarantee. This role has to be done responsibly. Since we started this process in July 2018, there have been enormous changes, above all since I was sat at home watching the games on television. You often say things without realizing the reality of working as a director, so that experience has allowed me to grow and develop.”

Why? Last season just after the restart of the league we were also without Ibra but other players stepped in and we saw explosion of Rebić and Hakan. Ibra can still slap them around for slacking even if he’s not on the field with them and that’s important. His presence in any means.
