Paolo Maldini spoke briefly before the Cagliari game, confirming the desire to continue working with Zlatan and saying Milan need to build on what they did.
Maldini was on the verge of leaving Milan, but the change in direction of Elliott – which also led to the confirmation of coach Stefano Pioli instead of the signing of Ralf Rangnick – made Paolo say ‘yes’ to CEO Ivan Gazidis and continue his work as the Technical Director of the Diavolo.
The Rossoneri have started building ahead of next season and it’s clear that they would like to see Zlatan Ibrahimović with them also in 2020/21, as talks are ongoing with agent Mino Raiola to find an agreement.
Maldini, in his interview with Sky before the match against Cagliari on Saturday, confirmed it:
“I believe that we, as I have said several times, have built something this season, which must have consistency. We need to continue on the foundations we have created. Zlatan is part of this project. It won’t be an easy negotiation but there is an intention to continue with him. If there will be another striker coming besides Ibra? We feel good with Zlatan. We have Rebić, Leão and we have many young players who with Ibra can grow exponentially, this is our idea.
“How complicated the last period has been? When you occupy a managerial position, you adapt your character to the needs of the role. Patience must be the basis of football. Everyone wants results, especially if you’re at Milan. What’s needed? Quality is the thing that makes you achieve results more easily. We have a shirt that weights and players must be evaluated not only for their technical skills but also for their personality. The lockdown, perhaps, has unlocked several players, but the growth started before it.
“The management unit? One of the conditions for staying in a working group is sharing projects. There is unity, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.
“Interest in Aurier? We spoke to his agent last year. We are thinking about ending the season well and then in the next three weeks we’ll have to operate on the mercato.”
