Pioli: “It was time to bring home the victory, we need to be more precise and concrete, we are here to help Piątek, Kessié? If you make a mistake, you pay”

Stefano Pioli believes Milan deserved the three points against Parma which would ‘help on a psychological level’.

On Pioli’s 7th match in charge, the Rossoneri got their 5th win of the season and Stefano’s 2nd, as they defeated Parma 1-0 at Stadio Ennio Tardini today.

Milan were dominant from start to finish but struggled greatly, once again, to put the ball at the back of the net. In the 88′ minute, however, luck smiled at the Diavolo: Jack Bonaventura’s shot was saved by Luigi Sepe but the Parma defense cleared the ball poorly and somehow it ended in the legs of Theo Hernández who beat Sepe and gave Milan three very important points.

“We had over 25 attempts on goal, but we were clear today, the team knew how important the game was,” Pioli told Sky. “Even if all matches are worth three points, some mean more than others. We were coming off good performance, albeit not good results, and it was time to bring home the victory. We dominated possession, shots on goal, showed intelligence and determination, so we deserved it.

“The standings? I’ll leave it [hanging] in the dressing room. We must be realistic, as one game doesn’t fix everything. We have many more areas to improve, we have to stay focused and we need to get as many points as possible before the Christmas break, because Milan cannot stay in this position in the table. I’m satisfied with my players’ performance, we made 90% of successful passes.

“The moment? When I see players who train hard, have the right attitude and determination, I don’t close to door. I’ve had more positive sensations over the last 3-4 weeks, I see the players very motivated and taking responsibility for the situation. All who are outside are less happy but those who entered from the bench today did well. We must think about the next game against Bologna which will be very difficult.

“Tactics: We have to make the right choices also in reference to what the opponents give us, sometimes we can go straight to the striker. We have to read these situations better, we played with the right spirit because otherwise you don’t shoot this much on goal.

“Leão and Piątek? Leão came on well, it’s true that Leão doesn’t fill the box like Kris, but we have others who can push forward from midfield, Çalhanoğlu, Suso and Bonaventura entered it. Kris misses the goal, he can’t be smiling, we are here to help him and he must allow us to help him.

“Ibrahimović? We’re thinking of the next games. There is a great discussion with the club and we’ll see what will happen. It’s important to become aware without losing humility.”

In the post-match press conference, Pioli said: “Three fundamental points? The objective is to think about the next game, maintaining the performance of the last month. Today’s three points help on a psychological level. We hadn’t won in a long time. We were against a difficult opponent but we deserved to win. We created a lot and risked little. The players were good. Nothing changes. We have to grow and think about Bologna.

“If we could’ve done more up front? Of course. We are working a lot at the team level. We need to be more precise and concrete. We’re not satisfied with shooting 27 times on goal and scoring a single goal. Our aim is to improve the standings. The objective was to win and if it didn’t arrive then it would have been very heavy. We have to stay focused. The opponents are tough.

“What effect did it have to be an opponent against Parma? I rejoiced, even if I’m 100% Parmesan the victory was too important. Perhaps, if we had been elsewhere, I would’ve celebrated more. Milan must play like this. If we are criticized for goals conceded in the last minutes then today we scored a goal in the last minutes because we held up at the mental level. We were lucid and good at staying in the game until the end.

“What has changed in the mentality of the team? Too often we give judgment on goals conceded or scored in the last minutes. I always think that it’s the head that commands the players. We wanted this win, it was the head that determined our victory. And we must take an example from this challenge for the future.

“If this can be the turning point game? It will be if we give continuity to the results. It was important, but also the next games are important. Then, there will be a break where we will understand where we will have to work more and where we are better. We must learn from this win, from the quality of the approach, and I think my players have understood that. I have positive feelings. I’m satisfied with what I’m seeing in training.

“How did Bonaventura do and why did I play Kessié instead of Krunić? I deployed the best team for what the opponent was and what was done during this week, where I saw Kessié more suitable than Krunić. I think Bonaventura worked well. He always knows what to do. He also played as a trequartista, but when you have smart players, they know how to adapt.

“The recovery of Conti? He’s doing well. Calabria is also a very good player. I chose Andrea to give continuity also to the defensive phase. He had a good performance, conceding little.

Franck Kessié and Hernani Júnior during Parma-Milan at Stadio Ennio Tardini on December 1, 2019. (Photo by Alessandro Sabattini/Getty Images)

“How do I rate Kessié’s performance? In the ball possession phase he had to move more to free up space and help Suso get away from his marker. He inserted into the box well, he had chances. This is how you have to work. Those who work less will not be chosen. I have difficulty in making choices because everyone is training well and I prefer to sleep a little less rather than have the choices easy and already made.

“If Kessié has recovered mentally? I try to be very clear with the players. If you make a mistake, you pay. But if you make a mistake once, the door does not remain closed forever. The team has worked so hard to have the win. It’s good that today they celebrate because from Tuesday there is hard work to do.

“If there is an attacker on my wish-list? I would like to speak positively about the attackers. The path is the right one and the time will come when we’ll be able to score more through them.”

Pioli also had an interview with MilanTV: “This was definitely a hard-fought win because we were up against a tough opponent. I think the guys really deserved this win, especially for the clarity of mind with which they controlled the field and their desire. We were determined to win, we knew it was an important match to get over this moment. Clearly, we haven’t sorted everything out yet but I’m very happy with the work carried out during the week and with tonight’s results, and I’m very happy for all our fans who continue to cheer us on despite our difficult moment. They were fantastic today, helping and pushing us on till the end.

“The defense? I firmly believe that, if the defense does well, it means the rest of the team is working well pressing and aggressing our opponents well and closing the lines well. On top of that, in these last two games the defense has done very well, playing with the right attitude and doing many things right. However, there are just as many things we still can, and must, improve on.

“What needs to be improved? 25 shots on target, 6 clear cut chances and just 1 goal, right at the end, means we risked dropping points we definitely would have deserved. We have to be more clinical when on the attack, but at the same time, we created a lot because we were making the right decisions and getting our passes on target, so we’ve got to continue on this path. Still, we need to be aware that the next game will be just as challenging and just as important to prepare well for it.”

why play Calhanoglu as a winger when he has no speed and no footwork
its really bad to watch him waste a good position

For me hakan is a 10,like you said, he’s no winger. I’d prefer bono on left wing cos he’s not as effective as a left mid. The teams definitely improving under pioli just need to start putting them chances away.

Just watched Verona-Roma and i can say we play better than Roma by far, but also i will have to disappoint you and tell you that no matter how Milan play there is no way that we will get to fourth simple because this whole shity league is fixed. Verona turned the game around and was the better opponent, but not just that they got a clear goal canceled (it took them like 8-10mins to find something wrong with the goal and even than it was very suspicious..) Roma was also awarded an easy penalty right after that. I just… Read more »

If I am the coach, I would try 3 4 2 1.
GK: Donna (84)
CB: Roma (82), Musa (80), Kessie (78)
LWB: Theo (81) RWB: Conti (78)
CM: Benna (80), Rebic/Krunic
LF: Bona (85) RF: Suso (82)
ST: Piatek/Leo (80)

We need more help on CB and CM, Rakitic or Modric would have been nice.
Based on the highlights I watched. The coach is making our team much better. We can compete for a top 6 if we can get some help in the transfer.
PS: Last year, I mentioned that Hakan will never be better than Bona.

with kessie as CB we will have a new bonera as he cant even clear the ball with a clean pass..and we do not have a REAL washed up striker who can play allone upfront..so we will score no goals..just play a bit more..maybe 3-4-1-2 ..and put gabbia as CB..play rebic and leao upfront..rebic was a beast with a partner in frankfurt..leao will shine with a partner..and gabbia we all could see how good he is against bayern..sad that all coach we have always has a stubborn mind and keeps some players ALWAYS out and prefers other, specialy in positions they… Read more »

Kessie & Hakan should leave in January Window
They are both not at the level Milan need to succeed

Theo is the only player at the moment with courage and heart that Milan were lacking, he does not play a bad game.
If Milan are to break into the top 4 they need to buy smart in January and clean out the playing stock

agree..but milan had the biggest problem in the ‘CLEAN OUT’ process..as no one wants to get our overpayed players whom we payed too much when got them..or the players just dont want to leave..becouse it will not find another ‘home’.who payes them so much for rookie football.so we MUST buy verry smart.and finaly find the right players for their positions

I really love this guy. his team selection and his man management is “nearly” perfect. & I will not judge him with the result in this season. it’s not his team and he is only improving it day by day.

The only reason that we should replace Pioli at the end of the season would be that we hire a coach who is A LOT better than him. someone in Pep, Pochetino or Carleto level. (I don’t think any star coach would be crazy enough to join the sinking ship of Milan)

say (or should i say bitch) what u want about john malkovich and his milan but personally i think he’s won me over with milan’s displays so far. hell, those 1st halves vs lecce and juve were enough. his tactics and strategies are generally spot on, ditto his subs during matches. even his intviews are much more interesting and direct, free of esoteric bs like giampaolo’s. too bad he didnt have luxury of having pre-season and mercato with milan as im sure he could’ve done more. usually, i only watch milan because i declared myself lifelong milanista long time ago,… Read more »

you right.its finaly time to give one man at least two years..becouse its not an easy task always to take over a sinking ship with high expactations and deliver in the first year.the players need that too.some stability..who knows pioli could be making a leap and get milan up..would love to see gabbia more..he has the spirit to be a part of first team..gabbia-roma-caldara and maybe rugani would a full italian defence ..with dona in goal and plizarri as back up..we have the italian national team in defence..a good base to use a 3 man defence..that would make theo and… Read more »

Thank you, Pioli. You are doing very good work. At last, we are moving forward, not backward.

It was an important win, and hopefully it will give some confidence to the boys. But our problems persist – Piatek and Suso are simply out of form, and we need both firing at full cylinders all year round for us to have any hope in the league. Our squad looks completely different if it includes one of serie a’s best strikers (which was the situation last season), or rather our top striker is somewhere in the mid tier of league strikers (the situation this season). Last season, the lack of depth in midfield is what really killed as off… Read more »

Cutrone is one of the players that we are missing. I’m probably his biggest fan here but I don’t think even him could solve our problems. I was watching a youtube analysis few days ago and they proved that Piatek only scored two goals less compare to last season. (based on the number of opportunities he gets and number of goals he scores). So basically his goal/opportunity ratio is not that lower compare to last year. I rarely see him in 100% opportunities and when he doesn’t get it, he is somehow useless. this situation is also making him worse… Read more »

Sohiel, forgive me my friend but I completely don’t buy into that explanation – Piatek was serie a’s best striker last season playing for Genoa and AC Milan, not the two most creative powerhouses of the league to say the least. Yet, he still managed to be extraordinary. I saw Piatek as a poor-man’s Zlatan that can score goals even in dreadful teams, and last season he was exactly that, and even more. Judging by last season you could be forgiven to think (as did I) that Piatek is the new Levandovski, the real deal. Heck, do you remember how… Read more »

I never said he is in form. I just said he is receiving 1/3 the service he received last year. lack of service and fans Pressure is something we should consider. I think he will bounce back. one or two goals would be enough to regain his confidence

Regarding Samu vs Suso that’s a bold claim Soheil, but you might be right. It’s hard for me to trust Samu too much, but I definitely see your point about his pace and the advantages he has in fast transition play.

Soheil…Piatek was at his best when playing with another striker (Christian Kouame). Our fullbacks are not the best defensively.

It would help the team a great deal to switch to 343, 3412 or 352 if we sign another defender like Demiral. With Romagnoli, Caldara and Demiral or team can play a back 3.

This would give Hernández and Conti more freedom to attack and provide service for Piatek.

Calhanoglu and Suso are not providing enough quality service to Piatek. With Hernández and Conti pushing forward he would have more quality chances.

I agree about 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 but it’s too risky in this stage for pioli to change things while we are playing good. I think Bonna – Piatek – Samu would solve our attacking problems. With Hakan and Suso, we have a delay in our every move.

Theo Hernandez is Milan’s top scorer at the moment.

Let that sink in…

Just thinking of possibilities with current squad…Theo is great in attack but leaves the back more vulnerable. Conti has shown some great work recently. What do you think would happen if Theo played as a LW and RicRod played LB. He does better when he stays further back and makes deep crosses. His style would also free Conti to keep pushing up.

even RW. I said that Bonna – Leao – Theo would be one of the fastest Seria A attacking lines 🙂 sadly it’s not PES!

Piatek is going through a bad form. Every striker goes through a drought. He’s still a better finisher than Leao.

the most exiting headlines since years..make me wanna celebrate for days non stop

Bernard Arnault has opened up to the idea of buying AC Milan from Elliott Management, according to a report, and he has huge plans for the club if he were to take over.

If he were to take over, it would have ‘potentially sensational repercussions’: his major target would be to bring both Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola to the club, or alternatively Kylian Mbappe and Jurgen Klopp

I’m excited by this news and I hope the rumors are true. Pioli is doing better than Giampaolo and Gattuso in terms of creating an identity with this team but it is still not good enough. His over use of Suso and Hakan Çalhanoğlu is disturbing to say the least and they are not providing any quality service to Piatek or Leao. This is why we are struggling to score goals. Our strikers are to isolated and they are receiving quality movement and support from Suso and Çalhanoğlu. Also, we would be better off playing two strikers which would help… Read more »

Abate would be the one player milan miss the most right now, I know he would not play much but a true milanisti. He still did alright at times and for example now when there is caldara is just coming back and duarte injured for awhile I could see him filling in. He should get a contract until the end of this season. In the end I will always be grateful for what he did and was truly sad seeing him leave.
