Giampaolo: “We have to do much better, the world doesn’t end if Piątek doesn’t play, I reserve the right to choose”

Marco Giampaolo has explained his decision to start André Silva over Krzysztof Piątek and stated he liked the performance of his team against Brescia on Saturday ‘until we lost control’.

After last week’s 1-0 defeat against Udinese which left a very bitter taste in the mouths of Milan fans all over the world, the Rossoneri returned to Stadio San Siro today as they hosted Brescia.

Coach Marco Giampaolo surprised everyone when he started with Piątek on the bench, letting Suso, Samu Castillejo and André Silva lead the line of the Diavolo.

Milan did relatively well in the first half and after 12 minutes, Suso, with his right foot, found the head of Hakan Çalhanoğlu and the Turkish sent the ball to the back of the net. The Rossoneri did considerably worse in the second half, with the exception of the last 10 minutes in which they had chances through Lucas Paquetá (who also started on the bench) and Piątek to extend their lead.

André Silva, Davide Calabria, Suso, Samu Castillejo and Hakan Çalhanoğlu celebrating during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“I’m happy for the win, but we can improve and we still have to work. We have a lot of work to do, we did good things and we didn’t risk anything, even though we lost control at some point in the game. We need to work together,” Giampaolo said in an interview with DAZN after the game.

“Piątek on the bench? I reserve the right to choose in every game. I chose André Silva, but also Kessié and Bennacer. We have a lot of strong players in the squad and I can choose from time to time who to send on the pitch. André Silva played well, I don’t know if he will leave but he’s a professional player. For this reason, I know I can count on him and I let him play.

“Piątek is a great player, but if he doesn’t play the world doesn’t end. Players must think only of giving the best for Milan, then I choose. Perhaps I saw him less sharp during the week or someone else in a better condition. Today, Silva had characteristics more suited to the game than Piątek. They have different qualities, maybe they can even play together.

André Silva during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“We have to learn to be a team and play with each other. I know what my players are like on an individual level, but we still need to grow overall. The team has worked little together so far, the guys haven’t been able to be in the group at the same time yet, so there’s still a lot to be improved.

“Paquetá as a trequartista? In my way of looking at things, he can become a great mezz’ala. He must learn to be less ‘Brazilian’ at times, be more concrete and less playful. He has the technique and the engine to become precise and attentive in his role. For me he can he a mezz’ala and then in the last 10 minutes in some moments he can also do that role there, but I like a player there [as a trequartista] who has characteristics of a striker.”

Lucas Paquetá during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Giampaolo said: “I liked the game for as long as we were in control and had the physical energy to do it. When we lost control we stretched and the game opened up. In those spaces we also created some more opportunities. I liked the spirit and willingness to do things, I liked the aggression on the ball and the defense away from goal.

“The games are all difficult, many times the differences are made up of details. Today we didn’t risk big things. Brescia had left a good impression on me against Cagliari. If this was revenge on Brescia [he became their coach in July 2013 and left in September]? There’s no revenge to get, I must do my job well at Milan.

“What Milan are missing and how we get to Verona? Something will always been missing, there’s always room for improvement. Time will tell what is missing. We’ll get to Verona in the best possible way. I will lose 16 players to the national teams. I only like to talk about work, because only work can give me reason over time.

The banner of the Milan fans to Siniša Mihajlović: “Win your most important battle with the same determination of someone who has faced it all” during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“The exclusion of Piątek? I needed a player to come and connect and André knows how to do it, but he has less deep-game compared to Piątek. The condition of André Silva? He’s conditioned [by the mercato] in the sense that he’s in standby, but he didn’t give me this feeling of precariousness in training. He’s physically better than Piątek at the moment. The choice was purely technical. Leão? He is a player who has different characteristics than Silva.

“The identity of this Milan? I like having an identity and then the players have to surprise me within that identity. I congratulate Brescia on their match against Cagliari, they surprised me. For some things they remind me a lot of my Sampdoria. We were good at preventing them from playing with their offensive game strategies. We need to have players offensively who are always fresh. If I could always substitute three forwards then I would. That’s why there isn’t a starter in that department.

Fabio Borini during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Paquetá playing closer to goal? He’s licensed to go there, a midfielder must be rational in his duties. He’s licensed to dribble and go. He’s an asset in that role [mezz’ala]. He can also play as a trequartista, depending on the game. The trequartista is a fake striker. I like a player who can play there with the qualities of a forward, which is different from of a midfielder.

“A type of player like Castillejo for the trequartista role? I like to see a player there with offensive characteristics. Then, there is a need to go deep, but there is a path that we are coming to. We must not make the players lose points of reference. I’m a symmetrical coach, I have to find the right angles.

Franck Kessié and Ismaël Bennacer during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Bennacer as the leader of the play? The leader must be the game, the common idea. The players must interpret things to the required level. The interpreters in that role are Bennacer and Biglia, because they are two excellent players. The change in formation? We didn’t change the formation, I’ve worked on the same concepts. I just moved two players.

“What percentage Milan are at and if they can fill the gap with Inter? I don’t know the percentage, but the derby is in 21 days. We’ll certainly be better than we are today. We’ll have a full week to work together before the derby. Now, however, the most important game is in Verona in two weeks’ time.”

Suso during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

Speaking to MilanTV, the coach said: “The performance? I liked the game until we checked out. That means keeping the ball, going to steal it after a loss of possession and keeping a high line. I liked it less when we lost control, it was also the result of fatigue. Paquetá up front? He served to fill a void, I had Borini do a task that he’s done well so far because he’s dedicated and has good legs.

“André Silva and Piątek? Silva has different characteristics than Piątek. Today I decided to play Silva from the start because I considered his characteristics more appropriate [for the game]. From time to time I reserve the right to choose, just like I chose Kessié and Bennacer. Milan have many players of level, more of less on the same level, I want to take advantage of everyone’s characteristics. You can also be on the bench, nothing happens… it can be a stimulus for the player himself, a strong motivation. Piątek then came on with the right attitude. He’s physically a bit worse than André. Time can only improve the situation.

Krzysztof Piątek during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Bennacer? We actually risked him a little for his physical condition. He’s trained very little. He’s a player of a role. I didn’t feel like playing him in Udine because I would’ve risked losing him like Biglia, he only had one training session. After a week I saw him better, he played that role at Empoli, in the national team he’s a mezz’ala, but he has more properties compared to others. He’s an attentive, alert guy, with very ample room for improvement.

“The changes made? We have to do much better. It’s not this game that changes things. Yes, it creates more confidence and it allows us to continue on our way but it doesn’t change. The players are committed, it’s also important to verify the right attitude of those who were substituted on. We cannot speak of exclusions. In 2020, there are no longer 11 starting players but 23. I want to create this awareness in the players, knowing that someone will play more and someone less.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu celebrating during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Çalhanoğlu got a yellow card due to the new rules regarding substitutions [players are now supposed to leave the field from the shortest path rather than from the middle]? We went to listen to the new rules. Hakan’s yellow card is the result of a habit.

“Set-pieces? In every game we use a strategy, based on the opponents. Today, Brescia left two ahead, every game we use a strategy that is based on how the opposing team defends. We adopt strategies to contain the opponent’s defense.

Alessio Romagnoli during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

Giampaolo also had an interview with Sky Italia: “My opinion on the game? There’s the will of the players to do things well, that’s the most important thing. There are a lot of things to improve and time is needed, the team is trying. They are very attached to the work and I’m confident.

“Why did I surprise with André Silva? For this game I chose the features of André, I considered them more suited to the type of game played by the opponents, he played a good game. Today’s midfield? Hakan plays better as a mezz’ala, but I didn’t have a regista last Sunday so he had to play there. We did well until we lost control of the game, then as a result we did less well. Suso played on the right and it felt like a homecoming? Suso played as an attacker, then he finds the most suitable position on the pitch.

Marco Giampaolo during Milan-Brescia at Stadio San Siro on August 31, 2019. (@acmilan.com)

“Playing at San Siro? The fans were wonderful. I dream of always being able to push the team to the end, to propose a fun and positive game. I asked the fans for a bit of patience to make this happen. How long does it take for a team to absorb my football concepts? It takes time. Next week I’ll have few players, they are all called-up by their national teams.

“The fact that Correa was not called-up for Atletico’s game tomorrow? I don’t know, you have to talk to the club about the transfer market. I coach the players that the club makes available to me.”

good win, giampaolo is also showing his tactical expertise. what was evident from my perspective and yes this my opinion, rodriguez will be back up to theo when he comes back, mustacchio will be dropped when Caldara is back. in final days of mercato if we can sign quality attacker, rumour is we are speaking to Carrasco & Depay. Either would be great. I still think we need to bring a new CB as caldara won’t be fully fit until Jan. With Cheillieni serious injury Juve won’t be selling Demirel or Rugani so we need to look elsewhere. Overall, this… Read more »

Musacchio is his name, not mustacchio ! Why do we need another CB ?????? We have 4 CB’s without Caldara, we have already 2 bench players, Duarte and Gabbia, why do we need a third ??? We play one game per week ! Gabbia offers safety, Duarte looks good, we don’t need CB’s !!! We need a second striker/ trequartista of quality ( Correa, Depay, Everton, Carrasco, even Taison is ok ) and we need to relaunch Andre Silva because it’s a lot of talent and quality in him !

@alexmilan…Agreed. We definitely don’t need another CB. Musacchio was good today and Duarte showed good signs during the little time we saw him. Paquetá should play closer to goal. I’ve said this numerous times. If we play 4231 with Paquetá in the middle of the front 3 he will create more goals and score more. I don’t think he is most effective as a Mezzala. We are not getting the best out of him there. Bennacer showed his talent today. We desperately need some big players with quality like Everton Soares and Depay. Today’s game showed that and once again… Read more »

Nick and Alexmilan- I agree CB isn’t the most important role right now, but we should also keep in mind that only Romag so far has been able to produce consistent quality. Paquetta should be in the middle behind the frontline, in whatever formation, 100% agree on this Nick. But I think you’re being a bit harsh on Suso. We can’t be over reliant on him, because most of the league has figured him out and double team him. But if we had others to share his load (e.g. Paquetta in thr middle and Jack on the left), he can… Read more »

Thanks Dejan. Alex & Nick, Duarte looked against a serie C team, coming from Brazil takes 12 months to adapt to Serie A. You can’t throw him into the deep end. Gabbia impressed sure but can you expect him to offer the same consistency against quality teams? This is why its called preseason because teams often chop and change and don’t play 100%. Musacchio is solid but not worthy of partnering Romagoli. Caldara is coming back from serious injury, it will take time for him to hit the ground running. In nutshell, yes we have 4 CBs. 1 is pure… Read more »

Gabbia has a lot of experience accumulate in the inferior leagues and at all national youth teams, he was called now to under 21, do u think all those coaches are insane ??? He must try to find his place in the first team, he is a Milan material ! It’s not easy to play against Bayern Munchen even in friendlies and he did an amazing job ! Duarte was brought because they considered he is prepared to play at Milan, although they would have brought someone else, so we don’t need another CB !

I’m not in agreement with that especially so early in the season but I’m not sure if Allegri was at the game just to hang out with Maldini and Boban for a beer or to study Milan.

I believe Allegri is friends with Giampaolo but he seems pretty chummy with Milan management.

So, don’t be surprised if Allegri becomes our next coach in the near future.

Overall, it was a decent performance from the guys today, but there’s definite room for improvement. Silva was a pleasant surprise, and definitely offered a different dynamic upfront and could be very useful this season if he stays. He however, needs to improve his composure in front of goal. Bennacer is crucial to the type of football we need to play in order to be successful. He was good today with transitioning from defence to offence. He has a quick decision making process that can either spring the team forward on a counter attacking run, or thwart the efforts of… Read more »

I feel that there are two negative players in the team. Rodriguez and Kessie. Kessie sometimes does some positive things but mostly these two players are negative in the sense that they like passing backwards. Yesterday while watching the match on tv from India, I felt at least on 3-4 occasions both of them had the chance to pass the ball forward and too in the opponent’s half but they still passed backwards. Also, they are not attempting difficult passes. Mussachio had the chance of giving 2 long passes, one to Paqueta and another to Suso, which if given could… Read more »

I was a kid when Milan was the best team in the world and Italian League was not broadcasted that much in India. I fell in love with these colours first in a school match when I saw the opponent wearing these colours with a Zafira logo. I was probably in 6th or 7th standard. I absolutely fell in love with the colours. Eventually I came to know that Milan wore them and started gathering info and then idolised Maldini as I also used to play as a left back. Well he said in previous interview that for him a trequartista is someone who is more of a striker than a midfielder, someone who is closer to goal and can score too, that is why he plays Suso and Castillejo there and that is why he wants Correa. A number 10 should first-and-foremost be a playmaker; that’s why Suso doesn’t fit there. If you look at Papu Gomez from Atalanta for instance- he’s not more technical or skillful than Suso. But he always looks for the ball, knows how to play 1 touch football, how to create double pass opportunities, can use both feet, and so forth … Suso has a lot of qualities, but he’s just not that player. Paquetta on the other hand seems to tick all boxes, but Giampaolo never thought to try him their in preseason.

Bajan Milanatic

You’re absolutely right about what a traditional number 10 should be, but those types of players are somewhat a thing of the past. Players such as De Bruyne and David Silva have been transformed into traditional midfielders, while players such as Mesut Ozil, James Rodriguez and Coutinho have found it difficult to cement a spot in the tactical setup of their respective squads.

Regarding the one touch and give and go (double pass), it’s my opinion that those concepts are taught and not necessarily inherent.

I too was concerned about that comment, “ he must learn to be less Brazilian at times”, but I noticed that focusing on that part of the statement alone really threw it out of context. Now when you add ,“be more concrete, less playful “, you can totally understand what the coach is trying to say.

The coach also mentioned in the interview that “he is licensed to dribble and go” (to goal), so I don’t think he’s trying to stifle his abilities but apply more discipline to his game.

Allegri used to play Mandzukić as a winger.
Sometimes , as long as you win , we don’t care who you put on the field.
But this time , we’ve had enough ! Samu and Borini offer nothing to the game , when Mandzu is a winger , he scores , that’s why fans shut their mouthes after the games. But when uou play someone out of position and he offers nothing , well that’s intimidating.
Otherwise , we are on the right track , all we gotta do is stay on it , and drive FAST.

I know its too late but instead of spending 40m on Correa, wouldnt it have been logical and wise to sign Ribery on a free transfer? He add experience and is able to operate in multiple attacking roles, best of all as senior player he would have helped the dressing room with his experience and winning mentality and could have helped silva and Laeo. Very surprised he ended at Fiorentia when we could have had him.

When you want to build something that lasts in time, you don’t buy a player who can help you 1-2 years and from whom you can’t win any money in the future ! Correa >>>> Ribery ! They will have to sell every year one or two players to supply the amount of money for players they bought and will buy, unless they will qualify for CL and that amount will come from there ! For this, they need young players who can develop and grow up their value which is amost impossible for a player over 30 years old,… Read more »

Alex, you dont win or start a new cycle without vetrans, you mentioned Juve, key players in their winning cycle were Buffon, Cheillieni and now ronaldo all +33 years of age. It will be a very good second striker, tall, strong, warrior, good technique, not like Depay, Correa, Everton, but serbian/croatian/bosnian stylish, strong, warrior, serious, but he has executions, accelerations, he is good, much better than any Castillejo

I also have mixed feelings over Rebic but he is used to Serie A playing for Fiorentina. He didn’t start his new season in Bundesliga on a good note and had a fall out with the coach. Well as long as it is only a loan with option I’m ok for it. Maybe he turns out good and they buy him out or if Milan qualifies for CL they’ll have more financial power and sign someone better.

Also, reports say that Taison is still on the cards despite Rebic signing

If they don’t pay too much on him it will be a very good transfer for the next 2-3 years, because Taison is very technique, similar to Willian ( they played together under Mircea Lucescu ), able to decide a game by himself. But let’s not forget he’s already 31, soon 32, it will be a short time investment without any chance of reselling him. In my opinion Giampaolo is trying to make this team play some sort of chameleon football starting with 4321 that turns either into 433/4231/4312. That was evident in the last game, where front three including left mezzala rotated between positions. Hakan/Paqueta were drifting in the hole while Suso and Castillejo spreaded the ball in wide areas. That created the space up front for Silva/Piatek

They certainly have the players for it

Lando
Guest

but i think it’s weird in yesterday match i saw samu drifting to the right side a lot eventhough suso was already there

alexmilan
Guest
alexmilan

I like this idea of chameleonic football !! I hope for him just to succeed ! Rebic can do this job very good, maybe if they bring Taison or someone similar Giampaolo will have the right solutions with back ups and the team will be complete. Leao is a striker who can give that link up play that Giampaolo said he wanted from Andre Silva yesterday and Piatek cannot give, so it’s good to have strikers with different characteristics. If they bring only Rebic, Castillejo will be the only back-up ( also Borini ) and he still need to adapt,… Read more »

Lol..Alexmilan, I like that word chameleonic. But yeah, you guys are right about the tactics not being the traditional ones you’ve grown accustomed to seeing in a 4-3-1-2, which is understandable in the age of counter pressing football, where passing out from the back, and double and triple pivots are the norm. Getting taison will be a bad idea, he has zero sell value and only foolish teams like Milan or mid table teams will pay that much for a 3- yr old. We could pay just 5-10 mil more for Everton who we all saw is a big game player. Our team is too freakin slow in transition! Idk how many times I need to repeat myself. We are also to slow to high press teams that can pass the ball. Suso is lazy and castellejo will press, he just has zero end product. We would look good with /leao Everton… Read more »

Taison won’t cost more than 11-12 mil, no one will pay 30 mil for a 32 years old ! And for that amount of 11-12 mil Taison is a great and proven offensive player, can play all the positions in attack, is very technical, fast and played in Champions league year by year from 2013 ! You can’t buy Everton with 35 millions, Everton will cost at least 50 millions. Rebic is a SS not a midfielder
