Calabria: “You can see a change in the way we play, Giampaolo is meticulous, I want to do better than last season”

Davide Calabria wants to qualify for the CL and says ‘our game is more fluid and we are more aware of what to do in certain moments of a game’.

The Serie A season soon starts and tonight Milan play KF Feronikeli in Kosovo for a friendly (20:45 CEST kickoff – live stream on Milan’s official Facebook).

On the pitch, there will be Davide Calabria who is expected to start in the right-back position. Davide has recovered from his injuries and is ready for his 5th full-season as a first team Milan player.

“How am I? I was able to regain my fitness in time for the training camp, I’m very happy about this; I extended my stay here at Milanello both before and after the training camp in order to be 100% fit right from the start with our new coach. I really wanted to be here and luckily, I accomplished it with the medical staff’s help.

“How do I feel about the coach? Well, he is introducing his philosophy of play to the squad. It’s not easy because our players are gradually returning from the break, not all our players are back yet so it won’t be an easy task for the coach either but you can already notice a change in the way we play. Our game is more fluid and we’re more aware of what to do in certain moments of a game, we have to keep it up. It’s not easy and we have to improve certain aspects because our coach is obsessed with the details. We have to make the most of the pre-season.

“What type of coach is Giampaolo? He is very meticulous, he’s very hands-on during training for both attacking and defensive training. With how he wants us to play, we’re going to have to pay close attention to the details, because if one of us makes a mistake the whole team is in trouble. That’s why we’re working hard on our precision, we’ve seen good results in the tests so far. The team has improved game-by game, in each friendly we’ve performed better than the last. We’re happy with our progress, as is the coach. Next, we’ll have to integrate the new arrivals, it will take some time but I’m happy with how things are going with the coach.

“The objective for the new season? I want to confirm the good things I did last season, and I’m confident I can do even better. Obviously, the team’s objective comes before my own, I want to do well, better than last season, I want to play a lot of games, and we want to qualify for the Champions League. We came so close last season, this season we want to make it.

“If I feel like a role model? We have a very young squad, but I’ve been at Milanello for a couple of years, and have been a part of the first team. I’m almost one of the most experienced players wearing this jersey. So, if I can help my teammates out, I’m happy to do so. The same goes for all the staff at Milanello, this has become a second family for me so I’m completely at ease.

“Rafael Leão and Léo Duarte? They’ve just joined us, so it’s still too early to judge. They’ve only been involved in three or four sessions with the team. Let’s give them time, they’re good guys who’ve been working hard since they arrived. Time will tell…”

In this new system full backs are so important and I think Calabria will fit it perfectly, he’s a solid defender with attacking instincts but he’s going to need to work hard because if Conti gets back to his Atalanta levels then he’ll bench Calabria, Conti is much more aggressive going forward with a better cross…. I’m not saying Calabria can’t do that but Conti is better or at least was before his injuries

He’s improving defensively no doubt but he needs to pay more attention to his side, he cost us couple of points last season.

I agree with Jibola; Calabria’s defensive skills need to significantly improve if he’s going to step up to the next level. I actually think his cross is quite good, maybe one of the better aspects of his game, but I agree that Conti has more pace and tenacity going forward.

Conti has better cross than Calabria? Haha sorry pal you are gravely mistaken. It’s like saying that Mike Tyson had better footwork than “Mohamed Ali”. That’s the contrary. Calabria has been my favorite player in Milan since his first debut. I saw a youngster who was a step ahead his teammates in play intelligence. He is now considered unsellable by Milan. It’s really sad that you don’t know why. The games against Roma and Napoli showed everyone that Calabria is nothing short of World class at his best. His transition between attack and defense is just like Hernandez. The only… Read more »

The only thing that’s sad is you think he’s world class….. World class is Dani Alves ext…… I like Calabria and don’t argue his talent but to say the only reason HE doesnt do it or score on a regular basis is because the rest of the team aren’t up to his level yet is laughable…… and what’s even more laughable is you saying Gattuso confirmed it….. is this the same Gattuso as I’m thinking of???? The one who has absolutely no clue about what he’s doing? The one who played Kalinic consistently? The one who played Hakan out of… Read more »

Conti didn’t play as full back at atalanta(he played as RM). He is bad at defending and ok in going forward while Calabria is the the exact opposite.

If conti is fit and get his confidence back Calabria will be nothing conti is class player but that injury kills his cereer

Hey you all that’s speaking for Conti are talking folly.. I’m a Milan fan for years and Conti have nothing on Calabria.. Conti don’t defend 1v1 well and also don’t dribble pass his apponent in attacking situations.. Calabria style is more like a cafu.. Conti doesn’t suit Milan.. had a one off season with Atalanta and as usual we rushed and bought him under the Chinese.. what a waste.. watch this season how he plays if he gets time compare to Calabria..

Conti was class player before the injury and Calabria is average player and he will be the same as he lacks speed

“we are more aware of what to do in certain moments of a game’. This statement by Calabria says it all.

That’s because we now have a coach who has a tactical gameplan. So now the players are getting instructions on how to play.
