Atalanta will play their Champions League home games at San Siro next season; the Curva Sud are against the decision: ‘in football that we love and defend, this request would have been sent back to the sender with a big laugh’.
Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia is under renovation and so Atalanta have made an official request to play their Champions League home games next season at Stadio San Siro, instead of using Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium – Città del Tricolore.
The Milano Municipality and Inter had already given their consent, and today Milan announced that they are too saying ‘yes’ to the request of Atalanta President Antonio Percassi. As reported by Milannews.it, the fans of La Dea will not be sitting in the Curva Sud but instead will sit in other sections during Atalanta’s UCL games.
“We can confirm that we accept Atalanta’s request to be able to play their CL home matches at San Siro,” Milan wrote in a statement delivered to ANSA. “Our decision comes in compliance with the positive opinion of Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala and after having understood the strong desire of the Bergamo club. We believe this opportunity is beneficial not only for Atalanta but also all of Italian football as it is inspired by important values such as the sense of hospitality, respect and ‘fair play’.”
The Milan Curva Sud, the ultras of the Rossoneri, have been vocal about their stand in the matter, and today (Thursday) they released an official statement:
“Modern football, made only of business and economic interests, has launched another low blow towards ALL Milan fans: the President of Atalanta, Percassi, has asked to be able to play at San Siro the Champions League games in which his team will be engaged in the next season.
“In football that WE love and defend, this request would have been sent back to the sender with a big laugh: you boasted about your new stadium and now you dare ask for San Siro? But do you know what Percassi has asked for? Does Percassi know what San Siro is? No, he does not know. Because otherwise he would not have allowed himself to embarrass Milan with his request, which was greeted with enthusiasm by all those hypocrites and politicians who run and live around football, but which offends US Rossoneri supporters who are forced to face the affront of seeing the team that is in the Champions League at our expense, playing in our stadium.
“What would President Percassi say if tomorrow Brescia asked for the Atalanta stadium in order to play the Coppa Italia? Who he say ‘no’ or should he obey to the precedent created by himself? What would your fans say? Why don’t you identity yourself with your fans as the ‘first Atalanta fan’? Because what we and the Interisti could suffer, one day could happen to the Atalantini, Napoletani, the Romanisti… any fan who is removed from his stadium as if he were not at home. Is this what awaits us when only the economic profit will count? That any President can ask to play in any stadium at will, without worrying about the reactions and feelings of so many fans who love that stadium exactly like their own home? Is it possible that in football there is no more respect for the passion of the fans, for their history, for their stubbornness to feel part of a world that now seems to be doing everything to turn them into customers?
“San Siro, dear AC Milan, is our home; Gate 14 is the doorway to our house and nobody invites unwanted guests within their walls. San Siro is the stadium of Milan and Inter, here they have cried, sang, suffered and enjoyed generations of fans; at San Siro, 50 years of ultras life have passed, at San Siro memorable pages of football history have been written, San Siro is linked with the legend of the greatest footballers of Milan and WE don’t want any President to get up one morning and ask to play here as if he were in his house.
“Because San Siro is not a theater or a room that is for rant, it’s not a villa for ceremonies: it is full of Rossoneri passion, of love for il Diavolo, of Milan, of those values that have been handed down from father to son, of that mentality that for 51 years has distinguished the Milan ultras from the others.
“Percassi take your guys to Reggio Emilia, write there the story of your team away from the stadium of your fans, away from Bergamo that will never be at home in Milano. We are men, we are Milanisti fans, and we have our own reasons and above all our own feelings: they are the ones we ask not be trampled. By no one, not even Milan!”
According to Milannews.it, AlbinoLeffe asked Percassi in the past to use Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, but the Atalanta President said ‘no’, forcing them to instead play at Gorgonzola of Giana Erminio.
