Milan agree deal with Empoli to sign Bennacer for €16m plus bonuses, the player will sign a five-year contract

Ismaël Bennacer is joining Empoli teammate Rade Krunić at Milan and he will be the third signing of the summer.

Milan have been searching for reinforcements in central midfield, as after the exits of Tiémoué Bakayoko, Riccardo Montolivo and Josè Mauri, the Rossoneri’s squad only includes one regista – Lucas Biglia – and he too may leave.

Empoli director of sport Pietro Accardi was at Casa Milan yesterday morning to discuss the final details of the transfer of Rade Krunić (who has already passed his medical) to Milan. However, during the meeting the parties also talked about Ismaël Bennacer.

After a day of negotiations, it has been confirmed by Sky Italia that there is now an agreement between Milan and Empoli for the 21-year-old. The Diavolo will pay €16m plus €1-2m of bonuses for the Algerian. The player meanwhile will sign a five-year deal worth a reported €1.3m yearly.

In addition to meeting Accardi, there was also a secret meeting between Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara, and Bennacer’s agent Moussa Sissoko. The talks will continue over the next few hours but unless something very surprising happens, Milan will sign Ismaël and coach Marco Giampaolo, who will be presented to the press on Monday evening, will have a new option in midfield.

Empoli had received multiple offers for Bennacer but the bid of Milan was superior. After signing Krunić from Empoli for €8m, and Theo Hernandez from Rea Madrid for €20m, now Bennacer arrives.

I do not know what the plan is… nothing is obvious. We are signing average players who will end up as Bertolacci, montolivio… Just go ahead sell some players and get Torriera and Ceballos. Only then we can qualify to UCL.
If Milan’s transfer market continues like that we will end up 6th-7th in the table next year.

What makes this worse is that if you look at the way inter, napoli and especially juve are spending you would think we are heading back words.

What are the managements ideas here?

The thing is that its so obvious that the most problematic department is the midfield so the solution isn’t that hard and doesn’t require a lot of thinking. We need at least two quality midfielders and the problem will be immediately solved and beautiful football will follow. In my opinion Muric and Bennacer are considered good signings only if the management signed them for squad depth. The starting mids must be of top quality (TORRIERA and CEBALLOS).

Thruth seeker, let’s remain calmed, this is Maldini we’re talking about, so I trust the kid’s potential. And about the transfe r strategy buy cheap sell expensive Scaronni and Gazidis has been very open on that approach. Will that lead us to CL probably not but hey at least we will play attractive football and we will get our hopes high buy shirts and tickets for 5 years. Can’t go wrong with that right?.

The fact he plays for Empoli doesn’t make him a bad signing. or make him a terrible player. See the case of Robertson and Wijnaldum at Liverpool, who were picked from relegated teams; and now, they are world beaters.
For me, a good team with a clear identity will always do well against a team of superstars. Don’t write them off just yet…

Totally agree Stan. 100%. Teams like Atalanta and Sampdoria have average players yet they beat teams like Juventus, Napoli, Inter and Milan.

I don’t understand how fans evaluate players and calling them average just because they were not playing in a big team. Unbelievable.

I guess everyone is an average player until they make it at a big club. Smh

At the moment, we need a team with the right mentality and belief, not a bunch of superstars. I have a feeling these transfers will come good. They may not be the best in the world, but they are filling the gaps we lacked -: lack of speed at left back, creativity and drive from the midfield. Let keep the faith and see how it plays out

I think Elliot is quite clear that they are going to sign a player with prospect rather than proven players. They sign talented youngsters under the radar cheaply and low wage, on order to sell in upcoming years. That’s why Milan is in deep shit under Elliot. No matter how sweet he talks, it’ crystal clear the motive behind is money.

Join the discussion…well if these players perform and become great then Milan can only win regardless of Elliots intentions because if they become great then Milan will likely grow as a team. lets hope you are right.

Yes let’s sign Ceballos, a player that doesn’t want to come here for 45m! Or Torriera, a player who couldn’t secure a starting position at Arsenal or Uruguay. Who needs one of the most exciting midfield talents in Serie A, pshhh.

It’s clear that we are not aiming for any champion league next season . Looks like we are buying players and to reselll them for profit. Arsenal model has taken effect. In so far as we have direction and the direction will take us to glory again before long ,then no problem. If we buy and sell to raise fund for more quality players then it’s ok. What I don’t want to see is selling our priced assets like crutone or Donnarumma to but buy untested and unproven players. Like we did during Silva and Ibrahimovixh time. We need to… Read more »

Last year squad is very competent, our best Mercato would be keeping Suso( unless he really ask for 6M€) Donna, kessie and Cutrone.

I’m hoping all this signings are meant to not break the bank as no sacrifices will be made. We already saved 10m€ of wage with departing players, so, signing 4 kids proven kids with cheap wages is a smart move.

Very good transfer, quick, strong, good distribution, intelligence, he will be a starter as DM. Very good player, doesn’t matter he played for Empoli. We bought Krunic and Bennacer to replace Mauri and Bertolacci, I think it’s more than decent. We still need one more midfielder to replace both of Montolivo and Bakayoko, and one will be from Primavera maybe. Don’t forget we still have Bonaventura, Calhanoglu, Paqueta and Kessie ( I don’t think he will leave, it will be a huge mistake to sell a young, strong and experienced midfielder adapted to italian league ). I agree with u there Alex. We are acquiring player with a higher margin for growth, and development. If we are going to pull our team out of the chinese mess, it’s going to be smart and quiet. Guys, remember that we also have to consider an expensive investment of the stadium construction. It would be unwise to spend high sums of money on players while taking on the stadium. Also consider the fact that we shall be playing fewer games next season (just Serie A and Coppa Italia). We just need a small squad that can guarantee progress. So… Read more »

Yup, I’m asking 6 more wins, that would mean 86 points so, we must fight the scudetto or at least reach 2nd place or else I’m calling this bullshit. At least 3 more wins is very modest compared to the clueless grinta so.. 77 would put us in the same level of Napoli.

3rd place is unacceptable right?

Dear friends, in no way PSG are financially stable club. They are signing huge sponsorship deals with companies that are also owned by PSG owners but operate under state of the Qatar so they are not directly connected. That is how they fill huge financial gap every year. PSG is in no way selfsufficient. From what I read PSG sheikhs are considering selling the club and buy new one in a more competitve leage due to year after year failure to win CL and unattractivness of french league. Whatc tjem destroy PSG in few years when they get tired and… Read more »

I do not understand why you consider him as a bad sign. Milan does not have 4 honest players and we are no longer the big Milan. If we buy two strong players and we do not have the adequate substitution for them then it makes no sense to buy two strong players at the very beginning

Just remember we signed two players from Empoli who formed half of Empoli midfield and got relegated… The thing is by signing them and not signing two already established midfielders we will be at risk of not qualifying to the UCL which will affect the next transfer window…….. This has been the case for 6 years now so i think its time to wake up. We are strong defensively and have quality players in the offense (suso excluded because he is super inconsistent and does not have the personality of big players) so the missing piece is the midfield. so… Read more »

Empoli relegated very unfair, they practiced a nice football and their problems were in defence ! Bennacer and Krunic were starters in their national teams ( Bosnia and Algeria, more than decent teams ), Krunic made 5 goals and 6 assists at Empoli last year, a team much much weaker than Milan and Bennacer was the engine of the team. There are very good players at weak teams, like Bennacer, Barella, Chiesa, Kouame, Pulgar, etc. We still have Paqueta, Calhanoglu, Kessie and Bonaventura. One more midfielder and under Giampaolo we will be there, on top. We are better than Roma,… Read more »

Some of you just come here and write comments without taking time first to read and research about a newly-signed player. If you care to know Bennacer is a very quality player. The fact that he plays for Empoli doesn’t matter. This guy has just been voted as the best player in the group stages of the on-going Africa Cup of Nations. The performances of established stars such as Sadio Mane and Mo Salah come nowhere near that of Bennacer in the Afcon. Remember you can sign the Torreiras and the Ceballos ant and they can flop big time. FORZA… Read more »

Personally I am happy with the Mercato so far, we are buying smart and making the right moves. When Fabian Ruiz was signed by Napoli how many of you thought he would be this good? Our Manager wants these guys, and he is getting them. I believe we should be hopeful and see how things pan out. CL is very achievable. FORZA MILAN

Reina – Theo Hernandez, Romagnoli, Musacchio, Calabria – Bennacer, Calhanoglu, Kessie – Paqueta ( Suso ) – Piatek, Andre Silva. It sounds good until now and it’s not over yet ! I think we need a better CB than Musacchio until Caldara recovers ! And give chances to Gabbia !

Yes, we definitely need a quality CB. I wish we were able to get Manolas to partner Romagnoli. Sigh. Not sure about Lovren even though he improved a lot under Klopp and he had a really good WC. But he is not as bad as most people think. He’s Better than Musacchio in my opinion though. Hopefully we can find a CB that is good and reliable until Caldara recovers. Bennacer is a good signing. Not sure why some people are freaking out because he plays for Empoli. He’s a quality midfielder and Milan were smart to get him.

There are rumors that we are pursuing Ruben Neves from Wolves. The player has already set his sights on Milan as he wants to emulate Pirlo. This would be another good signing if we can pull it off.

Instead of buying one costly big name midfielder and losing him for the whole season to injury, it is better to buy players like him at this moment.

Important signing. Krunic and Bennacer an upgrade to Mauri,Berto and Monto. Both players are a gamble again but they are technically very good(playing for empoli previously doesn’t mean they are mediocre). One more midfielder will arrive for replacing Bakayoko – who in my opinion will be Praet. Veretout will arrive ONLY if Biglia goes the the way around plus a decent cash sum. Management is trying to get a quality CB as well. I dont see any changes happening in the forward line. The squad will remain as it is like i said before and I think its good because… Read more »

Fantastic signing. If he was a Spanish playe you’ve never heard of in a different league, you lot would be crying tears of joy. He’s just been named best player of the AFCON group stages in which Salah, Koulibaly, Mane and Mahrez are all taking part of. He’s a very good passer, dribbler and was the player with the most ball recoveries in the league. 16m is a bargain, he’s gonna shine here and will eventually become one of the best midfielders in Serie A. What I see in players such as Krunić and Bennacer is character. Although I am still of an opinion that Krunić is a sub player he always played with balls, was not afraid to lead the attack and get involved in duels. That is what I miss for seasons now. Bennacer been a pivotal player in Empoli last season and he is still proving to be a real midfield character leading Algeria’s midfield at 21 years receiving 2 MOTM awards and being selected as best player of group stage.
