Gattuso to reportedly switch to 3-4-3 against Lazio with Caldara starting, Paquetá and Hakan to be on the bench

Gennaro Gattuso is apparently planning a change in the formation against Lazio.

Gattuso said earlier today that “our main problem is not the formation but rather our approach towards certain games”.

However, according to Sky Italia, Rino is planning a big change in the formation to face Lazio in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia as he’s going to use 3-4-3 instead of the 4-3-3 that’s been often used.

Gattuso stressed the importance of not conceding tomorrow and perhaps because of it he is reportedly set to add another center back from the first minute. This CB would be none other than Mattia Caldara, who spent most of the season on the sidelines due to the injury and has only played one match this season – in the 1-0 win over Dudelange in the Europa League back in September.

Alongside Caldara there should be the usual Mateo Musacchio and Alessio Romagnoli. In midfield there should be Davide Calabria and Diego Laxalt on the wings, and Franck Kessié & Tiémoué Bakayoko in the middle. That would leave Lucas Paquetá once again on the bench. The Brazilian has recently returned from injury and Gattuso may not want to risk him before Sunday’s Torino game.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu is also expected to start from the bench, with Suso, Krzysztof Piątek and Samu Castillejo playing from the start. In goal, there will be Pepe Reina and not Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the former Napoli and Liverpool man is the designated ‘keeper for the cup tournaments.

Meanwhile, Donnarumma, Calabria, Romagnoli, Ricardo Rodriguez and Kessié are one yellow away from suspension and should they get booked and Milan advance to the final then they’d miss it.

A.C. Milan (3-4-3) – Gennaro Gattuso (Probable – Sky)
Pepe Reina; Mateo Musacchio, Mattia Caldara, Alessio Romagnoli; Davide Calabria, Franck Kessié, Tiémoué Bakayoko, Diego Laxalt; Suso, Krzysztof Piątek, Samu Castillejo.

Gattuso probably switch to 4-5 different formations during the game depending on his substitutions. so absolutely nothing surprising here. Smh.

I’ve any coach use so many formation change in a season let alone one game. The players must confused about who is playing where? 🙁

Milan could probably switch to a 5-1-4 formation, continue playing like a bunch of frightened schoolgirls and lose every remaining game in the season and none of these Gattuso lovers would care… As long as we still somehow reach the promised land of fourth place that’s all that matters.

If guardiola does it he’s the best but when gattuso does it it confuses theplayers

That’s because Guardiola has the results and trophies to show for it and Gattuso doesn’t. I don’t even know how anyone can compare the two of them. That’s pretty crazy to me.

Why can’t milan just start cutrone and piatek! My god it not that hard! The one time they start they combine for a goal, I’m just confused as to how that means they no longer play together. Play a 4132 or 4312 or a 352! We have to start 2 forwards!

And risk having to use Borini as ST against Torino this weekend?
Good joke.

Why would we risk using borini when we play both cutrone and piatek? Your statement made no sense

Dunno about 343, would rather like to see 3412 with both Piatek and Cutrone up front and one of Hakan/Paqueta in the hole. Let’s see

I’m curious about that as well because I like Caldara from his Atalanta days and I’m also a fan of 343 formation even though I believe this team would play better with a 3412.

With Laxalt and Calabria on the wings I believe a 343 can work since they very speedy players. I just Gattuso doesn’t switch to several different formations during the game.

We can sack Gattuso but there are some glaring problems that are bare for all to see at Milan e.g lack of speed in almost all our players. That is a huge problem, the technique might be there in some players but with lack of speed we easily get blocked and it seriously affects our transition from midfield to attack. Then we obviously need a midfielder, word has it that Pellegrini has a release clause of 25/30m and I think he is a good cheap option. In the attack, we have had all kinds of rumors but whoever comes must… Read more »

I can’t believe a player like caldara has only played one game for us this season. I know due to injury but it’s like I almost forgot how good he is. I hope he and romagnoli have a great game together because those two are destined to be starters next year. Most importantly we need this win. Get us to the finals boys!
