André Silva was very happy after scoring a 94′-minute winner for Milan against Genoa – as it was his first Serie A goal.
When Milan signed André Silva from Porto in the summer for €40 million, many were expecting him to set the league on fire.
But the reality was different, and the 22-year-old had to wait until last night before he could get his first-ever Serie A goal.
And it couldn’t arrive in a better moment, as he scored a late winner for Milan in the 94′ minute against Genoa with a strong header, after Suso’s cross found him.
“If I don’t play a lot, then it’s because I have to work harder,” Silva told MilanTV at the end of the match. “A liberating goal? Of course, I hadn’t scored in the league yet. Now I’m happy and I would like to thank everyone, the staff and my teammates. Scoring means everything to me.
“Suso’s assist? It wasn’t so good of a nice [laughs]. The match against Arsenal? We go there with all of our confidence and we want to win, we will give everything. We need to improve to qualify.”
It remains to be seen whether Gattuso will be willing to bet on André Silva, who has 6 goals to his name in the Europa League this season, when Milan face Arsenal on Thursday night at the Emirates Stadium. Soccer betting sites give the edge to the Gunners after their 2-0 win at Stadio San Siro.
“It’s different scoring in the last minutes, I’m very happy and so is the team,” André told Sky Italia after the final whistle of referee Michael Fabbri. “Gattuso told me that I did a good job and that there is trust in me. His words in the press conference? I have to listen to the coaches and do my job.
“The missing goal? I had to score and I’m glad that I did it on Sunday. I’m happy for the first goal in Serie A but the most important thing is the work. The return leg with Arsenal [21:05 CET kickoff]? We will go there with the desire to win and then we’ll see what happens.”
Speaking in the mixed-zone, the striker said: “Since I arrived at Milan, from the first match in Serie A, I had been waiting for the goal because a striker has to score. I think that the work should be in the foreground, I’ve always worked and then the time to score arrives. Sunday was this time.
“I first saw Italian football in Portugal, I’ve already seen a lot here and I think I’m ready. Arsenal? We’ll have to do a lot because they are a very difficult team. Slaps from Gattuso? He doesn’t give me as many slaps as others. Cutrone? I’m happy to play in this team with Kalinić, Cutrone and others.”
