Montella: “It was a balanced match, we are being punished by details and we must be more clinical, Biglia isn’t calm”

Vincenzo Montella told all the usual stories but in the end Milan lost their 5th Serie A match, 2-0 against Juventus.

Milan were hoping that Saturday’s match with Juventus, in a sold-out San Siro stadium, can be the turning point of the season, but it was just more of the same.

The Rossoneri started the match very well with a lot of enthusiasm but after 10 good minutes, Juventus settled into the match.

While Milan had more of the ball all throughout the match (53.6%), they seemed to lack ideas of what to do with it and Juve looked comfortable at the back. The Diavolo had just one or two actual good chances, the best of them arriving in the last moment of the second half when Nikola Kalinić had to put the ball past Gigi Buffon; but instead, the disappointing striker hit the crossbar from close range.

Gonzalo Higuaín showed Kalinić how a top striker does it and scored two excellent goals (23′, 64′) to give Juventus the three points. Milan almost never looked like a threat, were toothless, sluggish with their passes and just uninspired, as Suso and Çalhanoğlu were marked out of the game.

After this defeat, Milan now have the same number of L’s and W’s in Serie A this term. They have 6 points less than they did last season after the same number of matches and have failed to score in their last 3 three home league matches – their longest streak in Serie A since December 2007.

“It was a very balanced match, one we played on even terms with Juventus, but the difference was made by Higuain with two great goals,” Montella told Premium Sport. “As far as I am concerned, the team put in a good performance, we were just a little tired. We were balanced and had twice as many shots compared to Juve. We could’ve broken the deadlock earlier, but their strikers did better.

“Milan lost all of their big matches [against Lazio, Sampdoria, Roma, Inter and Juve]? We are a restructured squad and in the games against the big clubs, apart from 15 minutes with Lazio, we always played on level terms. This is scant consolation, but we must be more clinical in front of goal.

“The defense [Milan have conceded 16 goals]? On both Juventus goals, the defense was in position, but Higuain scored two phenomenal strikes. We must also recognize the talent of the opposition. The attack? We went close to the goal several times, but there are few Higuains out there and not everybody has someone like him. Higuain is a Champion, half a meter is enough for him.

“The pressure of San Siro? I maintain it was a good performance from my team. In this type of fixture, you also need to be accustomed to games at this level. We now have to react straight away and focus on winning in Athens on Thursday in the Europa League. I expect to find motivation from the players.”

Speaking to Sky, Montella said: “We prepared for an aggressive match, it was a balanced match as long as we had the strength. We were penalized by two great plays of a Champion [Higuain]. Juventus have more than one player at the highest level. The squad was not rewarded, we had the same [number of] opportunities as Juventus. We played an even match against an extremely strong side.

“I’m sorry, now we need to find the energies and absorb yet another defeat that came in the same manner as the others against the consolidated teams. Also on Saturday the team played the game that they had to do. It is a shame that we lost our energy and quality during the game.

“We have to think about being consistent. Everyone goes through difficult moments in time. Higuain’s goals? He was good, his intuition… we must say how good how opponents are. Buffon? He got better with time. The team? There are good players here, they will become very good.

“Juventus already have very good players, it’s all clear. Kessié and Biglia [who were disappointing again]? Kessié is 20, let’s not forget it, it’s his first experience in a big club. Biglia is suffering a bit from this situation of results, he’s a very sensitive guy. I believe in him, he has a big personality.”

In his post-match press conference at the San Siro press room, the coach said: “We had difficulty handling the match? I disagree, I think we played 15 exceptional minutes in which we deserved a goal and in the first half we created more than Juventus. The match was decided by a top player.

“Our negative numbers? I think the last 3 defeats here at San Siro weren’t fair. We must grow, but I see a team that knows how to be on the pitch. The spaces given to Higuain? In the first 70 minute we played a defensive game of a great level, giving very little to the opponents.

Gianluigi Donnarumma during Milan-Juventus at Stadio San Siro on October 28, 2017. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)

“Higuain scored a goal of an absolute Champion, he is one and he scored two goals out of nothing. Milan are lacking a top striker? Dzeko [against Milan] scored a goal via a deflection, let’s not forget. Players are destined to grow, ours are not accustomed to these matches, the players of Juventus have made the Champions League final. Top players of €100m want to play in the Champions League to win it [Aubameyang said he wanted to join Milan]. I’m happy with the mercato that we did. This situation does not help the team because the players are young and the jersey of Milan weights.

“If I’m envious of Juve for something other than Higuain? I don’t envy anything. They are an example and teams are built over time. They are experienced and are now introducing some young players, but they are built to win the CL. There was optimism in the summer because big achievements are possible if you approach them the right way, even if some incidents could’ve gone our way.

“We don’t score at San Siro? We went close against Juventus due to the dangerousness of the actions created. The same happened against Roma. Who are we racing with? Ourselves. We’re not looking at the standings. We are a team that can also have a sequence of wins.

“Biglia? I’m honestly, in general, not going to comment on individuals unless they score three goals… I think he can do more. He’s an extraordinary guy. I don’t know why but in the last period he has recently not looked calm. I am convinced he’ll become the added value we are looking for.”

Montella also talked with MilanTV after the final whistle of referee Paolo Valeri: “This is the game that has upset me the most. We played a good game, but we are being punished by details, this time Higuain’s sharpness. We did well to stop the other top players they have, but the difference is that our shot hit the crossbar and went out while theirs hit the post and went in.

“We stopped them from playing the type of game they wanted, although towards the end we dropped the intensity and lost a bit of confidence, it’s normal.  Juventus defenders are very physical and experienced, that’s also why we seemed to lack have lost energies in the final minutes of the game.

Suso and Mario Mandžukić during Milan-Juventus at Stadio San Siro on October 28, 2017. (@acmilan.com)

“The lack of goals? We need to have the conviction, it’s a matter of centimeters. In two occasions tonight, Kalinić was just centimeters away from scoring. We need to keep calm and focused, we will get there. Had we scored first, the course of the match would have definitely been different.

“We had the right approach. I saw the boys convinced, especially in the first half. It’s not easy to play in front of 80,000 fans. We could have scored two goals tonight because we were dangerous up front. These five defeats, with the last three at San Siro don’t do us justice. We have to improve because when you play better than or as good as your opponents you have to win.

“The formation? We’ll continue like this. The team now has an identity, we’re only missing the results. Today and tomorrow we’ll be demoralized but on Monday we will raise our head and try to change this moment when everything is bad. This is also a moment of growth. Suso and Çalhanoğlu? Well, the opponents marked them well and gave more space to our less dangerous players. They intentionally focused on the two because they are those who feed our strikers.

“Abate was captain? It was a simple and clear choice. The club had asked me for a new captain like Bonucci and when he’s not there then the old hierarchies are restored.”

I think biglia and kessie are more suited for a 3 man midfield. They are an issue right now.

I think it’s time for locatelli to start games and also silva/Cutrone to get the nod.

Biglia and kessie really need to step up, who do we play in that two man midfield next to loca?

Do we dare give Monty or mauri a shot?

Monto. It’s not because we are struggling with other players but I have known from the start that the current midfields are not better than him. But this is all useless with Montella still as coach.

Whether you rate him or not, I think letting kucka go was a huge mistake. Could have been a real asset this season.

Aside from musacchio, none of the new signings have seriously impressed me consistently. Musacchio seems like a very solid player

In hindsight, maybe our old squad wasn’t as crap as we say it was and 3 quality star signings would have done the trick.

All I hear are excuses. Serious investments were made and results are very critical to the fans and most especially the Board.

Milan we quite good in the first half but found it difficult in connecting with the attack. Suso and hakan were clearly marked out.

I’m just tired of seeing Milan lose its just sad.

Agree. As a fan that can only observe from outside, i think the issue is lack of leadership and innovation from Montella. We can use Valencia as real case study. Their coach Marcelino is their key success factor that can transform the same player as last year (such as Zaza, Rodrigo, Parejo, etc) into better player this season, the same applies for their new player such as Kondogbia who is not special but now seems like better CM. Coach is instrumental in creating cohessive unit. Well-oiled team consist of average player can beat bunch of galacticos but less cohessive as… Read more »

Pathetic how this million dollar team will comfortably keep the ball in their own half and not bothering to attack while losing. Maybe they are forced to play like that as they can’t really attack even if they want to, which is still on the coach. Don’t tell me he need more time. He had enough to at least play better and collect few more points. I doubt Fassone or any other ambitious person will get into the season with Montella had it’s been cleared the guy would be demanding all this time. We could be having time against us… Read more »

Suuure mr Montella we were playing football so attractive that even gave boners to Juve fans but Higuain is simply higher force like thunder or Icardi, Immobile, Dzeko.
Every good striker will make our defenders look like a joke. They are too far away and Rodriguez is not even a CB. I know who is tho: Musacchio, Paletta, Gomez and they were watching the game away from the pitch.

Kalinic, Kessie and Borini were loaned with THE OBLIGATION of buying them at the end of the season ! Also Lapadula and Niang ! Bertolacci and Bacca, just with option to buy, they can return ! Borini was a good movement for the RWB position, Kessie is a good prospect for the DM position and Kalinic should be a substitution option.

The anger and criticism against Montella is justified, although he shouldn’t be the only target of the fans wrath. But with one of the worst defenses in seria a (despite having the most talented squad in that department) and an incoherent system and formation, what would you expect? But yesterday’s match wasn’t on him. These are 3 points we were counting on loosing before the season starts. We played reasonable (first half was way better than the second), against a better team and one of the best in Europe. We should focus on beating teams that are below our level,… Read more »

I refer you to Conti’s first season at Juve my friend – you start a scudetto attempt by managing clean sheets, the rest should come afterwards.

What’s important now is stability and confidence, not our self image (coward or brave). I agree the approach can backfire at times, but imo it’s the best way to stabilize this sinking ship.

U raise good point there as even Capello, mou and lippi are pragmatic sometimes. That ‘offense win u matches defense win u trophies’ and all that jazz right? However, why should Milan worry about defending the lead when they can’t even lead to begin with playing like they’ve been doing.

You are right, we also need to learn how to score goals as well. We are very weak in the “creating chances” department, no doubt. My comment was referring mostly to attitude – we need to get rid of this cloud hanging over our head where “they spent 200 mil euros therefore they should be playing great football” and just focus on accumulating points. Get back to the basics that we had established in the previous season to a certain degree (last season we were able to “kill off” matches much better than this season), and build from there. Yes Bayern could’ve won 4-0 through scholl, effe and Jancker but After beckham injured Matthaeus in 80th min, giggs switched from rm to his natural position lm and saf subbed in solskjaer and sheringham, it was fairly one way st, hence 2 crucial corner kicks in dying minutes. Hell, even schmeichel took part in 1st corner and 2 subs st scored for mu. If that’s not all out attack then I don’t know what is.

Well, surely original catenaccio, total football, jogo bonito and sweeper role are indeed long dead but i think its not wrong to say that greece ’04, inter 09/10 vs barca (with lucio as sw and even eto’o man marking the hell out of messi), italy ’06 (cannavaro as sw), milan 05 vs barca (with stam as sw), italy ’94 (who’s who as sw), chelsea ’05 and ’12 and some other teams did implement catenaccio tactics.

I can’t understand this one!! Are U all satisfied with his after match excuse?? At least we can try other option we can’t just sit and look our beloved team get destroyed like this!! Who did know that Zidan would have done this better after taking over from Benitez? Tell fasobelli that we are not inter! We are Milan! That why we should win… Read more »

LMAO.. a sheva once upon a time.. the real sheva said something last leason.. in fact somehere in the middle of last season.. he said.. montella is NOT the man for milan. What happened? 200 thumbs down.. and now you eat your own words!! i was RIGHT. Eat your shit now When bonaventura was announced as our golden ball winner player, and you all praised him..you unconsciously set a new standardbar for milan. If bonaventura was concidered as CRAP which he is.. we never would sign kalinic, borini and biglia.. our new standard in milan is bonaventura is our best… Read more »

Pleeeeeaaaaase !!! Someone tells this stupid coach that he needs a psychiatrist !!!! Please, because I am full of nerves when I read his absurdities and it’s very hard for me not to insult this clown !!!!!! So, he told us that we played at the same level with Lazio, Sampd, Inter, Juve and Roma ????? But, unfortunately we did lose… My god, please, someone bring him to the emergency of psychiatry ! We didn’t play at the level of cagliari, genoa and udinese and you told me we did play at the same level with the big teams ,… Read more »

Brilliant from you Alexmilan. He emphatically requested for kalinic and he got him. My question to him is very simple. Why did he allow bacca, niang, kulka, poli to leave? As far as I’m concern, the so called biglia is not better than montolivo, kessie is not better in any way than lucatelli and kalinic is not better than bacca. He should allowed to resign. Otherwise we would be like everton

Morontella..morontella..im tired of giving u advices. Ur tactic of sending the ball to wingers hoping for miracles never worked then and sure as hell doesnt work now. If thats how u wanna play then might as well use 3-5-2 or plain 4-4-2 so u’ll have 2 st waiting inside the box because thats NOT how u execute 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. To play with only 1 st u need acute finisher who can also play like san marco, romario, eto’o, lewandowski or, ahem, auba (the guy said in socmed he wanted to join but milan chose to court beloverated instead). Yes… Read more »

I don’t remember Montella saying that about Bonucci but if he did, let me add number 4 – saying such a thing puts all the blame on Bonnuci, placing him the direct crossfire of the fans, which is a bad thing in several levels. What I do remember is that he said 4-3-3 won’t go because Jack and Suso have no proper subs (which begs the question- why didn’t we buy any, or at least keep Niang). I personally think that if Jack is fit for most games (big if), Hakan is not a bad sub. Suso is a different… Read more »

He did say that. I think its on rossoneriblog. Regarding 4-3-3, its my favorite formation along with 4-4-2 but i dont think milan can pull it off considering 1) as good as suso is, he’s not fast or skillful enough (yet) thus fairly easy to contain by good cb/lb double/triple teaming him up, 2) milan dont have any other winger (i dont like deulofeu but i think him or even niang couldve been solutions to this problem), 3) milan dong have playmaker(s) who can control the midfield and/or set up fast counter attack. I think 4-4-2 or even 4-3-1-2 could… Read more »

Yeah, points 1-3 are all valid. Although I would still say that I believe Suso can still get decent output from the LW throughout an entire season, despite his lack of pace. Maybe not CR7 numbers, but still something decent. The trouble with 4-4-2 is that the 2 in middle should be real powerhouses, as they will typically be up against a midfield of 3. I really like 4-3-1-2, or the diamond formation, as any other Milan fan who followed them during Ancelloti’s reign. But the formation really relys on a number 10 at the level of kaka to play… Read more »

Why then did he allow bacca, niang, poli and Kulka leave? He said then that bacca don’t play with the team, okay how many important goals has your number 7 scored, how effective is kessie over kulka, how better is biglia over montolivon and lucatelli?

“there are few Higuains out there and not everybody has someone like him.” Yeah we couldve gotten Aubameyang but you and the management for Bonucci and Kalinic instead. Like RKaY said, only Musacchio is proving to be a great buy, to some extent Rodriguez too. Hard to say anything about Conti with his injury and Silva is showing glimpses of his quality but is played too little. Is Biglia sensitive and is affected by the results but still has a big personality? How does that add up. Loca is showing much greater mental fortitude smh. 200 million spended for nothing.… Read more »

For me personally , I think the problem isn’t montella, I think the real problem is the management especially fasonne . I believe he doesn’t have balls to sack motella. Like he is scared of sacking him or something . The only complains and after every Los they have a meeting and u hear again that they are backing motella . I mean if we are failing and u make a change isn’t it better to do so than going on and only to keep failing . Gasometer don’t have balls I tell u. If u don’t take risk then… Read more »

Montella, 3 man defense makes milan weak. Not losing a game is already 1-point gained. Your 3 man defense have lost easily 5-6 points. Why play with 3 behind? Go back to simple 442, 4312, 433. Find your best 11 and stop change and change. We are not in pre-season training. Go back to a 4 man defense.

See how top 6 teams bullying their opponent, I would say that our season is finally over. Some would say it is early because there is 27 games left with 81 points on the table, but sadly those points means to be giving up to our opponent.
Last word to captain bonuflop or captain bondogbia or captain bon-era, please leave us before this season over. We need to get back our 40 mio and 7.5 mio of your salary to pay our debt.

They are yet to sack this coach, this is what he does week in week out, talk and excuses for his failure, we always play better than opponents to him but lose, what kind of coach is this, no fan on this platform should argue again as it’s obvious that we don’t have technical know how, only a fool will be doing the same thing and expect difference result, you played well in every game and lost what a coach.

I’ll give u some examples of romanian coaches who are much much better than Montella but they hadn’t the chance to train such a big club and such talented players, but as trainers are much experienced and able to react at the right time, not like the clown montella :
1. Mircea Rednic ( Royal Mouscron )
2. Ladislau Boloni ( Royal Antwerp )
3. Marius Sumudica ( Kayserispor )
4. Cosmin Contra ( Romania – national team )
5. Dan Petrescu ( CFR Cluj )

So, for god sake, montella out !!!

Interesting facts.
All Home teams won this weekend except Milan.
Results of Last 6 matches of our rivals:

Lazio 6 wins 0 draw 0 loss
Napoli, 5 wins 1 draw 0 loss
Roma 5 wins 1 loss
Inter 4 wins 2 draw
Juve 4 wins 1 draw 1 loss
Sampdoria 4 wins 2 losses
Fiorentina 3 wins 1 draw 2 losses
Milan 1 win, 1 draw 4 losses

its not just that we are losing, but boy, those ahead of us are hardly dropping any points. Difficult times

Montella is a sitting duck now for sure. I don’t really care if he stays or goes. Top 4 is starting to look extremely unlikely. It’s not just the amount of points we are behind, it’s that the Top 4 are all looking in great shape, while we are looking a bit shaky.

There’s a lot of things looking bad at Milan right now. I’m really worried about ownership and financial status of the club. It seems Milan will be handed over to that hedge fund Elliott

Anyways it seems that Elliott hedge fund owners Singer family are passionate football fans so the possible take over could be the blessing in disguise. They also implemented a clause when they lend the money, where is written that Li family are forbidden to sell any of prized assets in the team because it would decrease the value of the brand Milan is
