The new Chinese owners have confirmed through a statement that Marco Fassone will replace Adriano Galliani and Barbara Berlusconi and thanked Silvio Berlusconi.
The new era at Milan will have new owners and a new management as while Silvio Berlusconi will take an honorary role it remains to be seen what role – if any – Galliani and Barbara, who are currently acting as joint-CEO’s, will have with the new Rossoneri.
What’s clear however, is that Milan will have a new top man in charge and that is Marco Fassone. The Sino-Europe Sports Investment Management Changxing Co. Ltd group which will acquire 99.93% of Milan by the end of 2016, released an official statement today announcing the appointment.
“Beijing, 11th August – Marco Fassone has been officially appointed by Sino-Europe Sports as the representative of the team during the interim period, and will be the CEO and Managing Director of A.C. Milan after the equity transfer is completed,” the statement reads.
“Mr. Fassone served before as Managing Director for F.C. Internazionale Milan, and was earlier Managing Director of Calcio Napoli, and COO of F.C. Juventus. Mr. Fassone already shared some insights with Sino-Europe Sports providing several suggestions about the management of the team and the football culture in Italy. Sino-Europe Sports believes that an experienced manager is crucial for the success of the team, and this is particularly true for a giant like AC Milan. Mr. Fassone, after proving himself among several Serie A giants, is the best candidate for this position.
“Mr. Li Yonghong, president of Sino-Europe Sports, deeply values the glorious history of AC Milan. He is very optimistic about the sports industry in Europe and China and genuinely wants to support to bring back the glories to AC Milan. Mr. Li Yonghong is confident that Mr. Fassone is the best representative for the club and for the Chinese partner. Mr. Li Yonghong expressed his honor to have met Mr. Berlusconi last Friday in Sardinia, and wishes a wonderful cooperation to both sides. He also sincerely respects Mr. Berlusconi’s contribution to the team over the past thirty years.
“The Sino-Europe Sports Executive Director, Mr. Han Li, was a junior player for a Swedish football club, and engaged in the M&A business (Mergers and acquisitions) since 2002 in Europe and China. Therefore, Mr. Han is not only familiar with the football world, but also was able to gain experience in capital investment, with a deep knowledge of both Europe and China. He is also a fan of AC Milan. During the last two years Mr. Han has been responsible for negotiations with Fininvest.
“AC Milan’s future holding company is named ‘Rossoneri Sport’. Rossoneri, the name for the team as well as for the fans, owns the special honor and great attention. After the news of the acquisition was released, Chinese fans filled the online website with profound excitement and expectations for a great future. Sino-Europe Sports sincerely thanks Italy, China and the fans of AC Milan in the world for all the support throughout this process. Step by step, with the highest respect towards the Club, and while keeping genuine love for football, the team will be on the top of Europe again.”
The new Milan is taking shape and it will be very interesting to see how Fassone and the new Chinese owners do as the mission is take Milan back to the highest heights in anything but simple.
