Borriello To WC: A Real Chance?

ROSSONERIBLOG.COM’s Meytar Zeevi sees what the odds are that Milan striker Marco Borriello will feature with Italy national team at World Cup, as the South Africa affair is getting closer.

The 27-year-old striker could finally make his wish come true and help to the Italian national team in the toughest competition of all, which really, seems not realistic for them to win, and of course, we speak of the World Cup, which takes place at South Africa this year. With Brazil and Spain clear favourites, where is the place of World Champions – Italy, who just four years ago beat France in the final of the tournament, where Gennaro Gattuso ran pants-less.

Borriello didn’t took place in 2006 huge success but this year, 2010, could be the turning point in his career, in which he will finally get the call, and will take him to the World Cup following a wonderful form of no. 22.

Ronaldinho: Milan Are My Home
Is Dzeko Plan Still Needed?

Borriello has grown at Milan youth academy, and was sent to many clubs, some of loans, some on permanent contracts. He switched eight clubs during his career. On 2008, he returned to AC Milan from Genoa, after proved himself as a serious goal-scorer and was in hot-form. However, Carlo Ancelotti did not have the chance to play him very often, since he picked up an injury that kept him out of the football fields for most of the season.

Marco Borriello has returned to the squad and the hunger is there. SuperMarco has been in very good form under Coach Leonardo, recording nine goals for the Rossoneri, eight in league and one more in Champions League. After a long injury, it looks like the striker has came back to live, but is it enough to get the call of Lippi?

Italy will play Cameroon on third of March and apparently, Marco Borriello is going to be on the squad that will be announced by the former Juventus boss on Sunday. With various injuries in Lippi’s favoured squad, the team that will face the Africans will see many changes. As Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino are out injured, Borriello, who got the call for Euro 2008 but didn’t take part, finally can fill in and prove his worth for Italy.

The match versus Cameroon is the last before the real action at South Africa, where Italy will need to handle Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia. This Italy is much worse than the former one, who won World Cup 2006. Basically, the key players are the same, and after four years, the hunger is perhaps gone, the players get older and lose form. Italy need freshmen and Borriello could be the perfect person.

The performances of Borriello against Cameroon, as well as in league, are the keys for the call up for World Cup. It is still unclear if Lippi will stay the manager of Italy until the World Cup, and due to this, Marco needs to make a good impression at every one. Borriello must prove himself, as this World Cup could be a one-life chance for him, as he’s not getting any younger.

Marco Borriello is talented, skillful and hungry man, to all thoughts. But he must find the right balance first. At Milan, he has some games that he’s the best, but in the others, he’s very bad, and just disappears. In order to make it to the World Cup – Borriello must find the right pace. He has the talent, now he just needs to work hard.

I agree. Though you didn’t took a real side, I see that you think Borriello should be at World Cup and I agree. First, he must help Italy beat Cameroon though it will be hard since many first-team selections are injured. I hope Nesta will return to Italy too…!

Well, Borriello certainly has the qualities to feature in World Cup, but first he must get better and help more to Milan. Borriello scores, this is the job on the striker, but he needs to do more also outside the box like he started to do in the last matches in order to receive the call of Italy Boss…! Forza Milan…!

Borriello will do it to the squad against Cameroon for sure. If he gets the World Cup call? Well, it’s up only to him. I hope he’ll do…
