President Yonghong Li has stated ‘there is a profound love that links Milan to China’ and coach Vincenzo Montella thanked for the mercato investments.
Milan changed hands in April and after 30 years of Silvio Berlusconi, Yonghong Li, through Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux, purchased the Rossoneri with the main intention of bring them back to the top.
Yonghong has already become the owner to spend the most on transfers on his first year in the history of football, surpassing Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich, as Milan have signed 10 players for €211m (it has to be noted, however, that some payments will be spread over several years and installments).
Today, Mr. Li hosted an event in Guangzhou, China and had the squad, who are touring the country as part of the annual International Champions Cup, as guests. On the occasion, the club’s Executive Director and Yonghong’s right-hand man, Mr. Han Li, and Mrs. Ping Wang, Chairperson of the China Next Generation Education Foundation, have signed an agreement which has given life to “AC Milan Special Fund”, a project that aims to support the development of football in Chinese schools.
“Today is a very important day for us. This agreement with CNGEF is a great opportunity for Chinese football to grow and to develop a new model for all young players,” the President said during the press conference, which Marco Fassone, Massimiliano Mirabelli and Vincenzo Montella also attended.
“I’m particularly happy to have the team here in China with us. This makes me proud. There’s a profound love that links Milan to China. This has been strengthened by the great work of people who work inside the club: thanks to Fassone and Mirabelli, the club has managed to sign great players.
“We are positive and fully convinced that the team will make our fans proud, both in Serie A and in Europa League.” Milannews.it also reported that Yonghong said: “From day one, I guaranteed signings for Milan in order to return to being big in Italy and in Europe. We will surprise our fans.”
Mrs. Ping Wang of the CNGEF, said: “It is a great privilege for us to work with a football club such as Milan. I think this a huge step for all those youngsters who enjoy playing football. The Vismara Sports Centre [the training center where the Rossoneri’s Youth teams train] sets an example for the work the Red and Black club does with its youngsters, where not only it improves the football skills and physical conditions but also betters students’ mental toughness and character.”
Montella and his players were present at the evening; Per Milannews.it, the 43-year-old coach said: “Now it’s up to us and we have a great responsibility. The market? I can say that I didn’t think that we would do things so quickly. So many players have arrived, and some will still arrive.”
Vincenzo, who is starting his 2nd year at Milan, added: “It is a great pleasure for all of us to be here. I wish to personally thank the President, for all the enthusiasm he has brought and for the investments he has made. Everything he is doing is making our fans dream again. Now it’s our turn, it’s not going to be easy with all these new players but I am positive we’ll do well next season.”
Yonghong Li is still expected to finance the arrival of a top striker (Andrea Belotti, Aubameyang and Morata are the leading candidates) and then it’ll be down to Montella to get the needed results.
